Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and emergency-construction program under which this C4-S-A1 troopship was built at Kaiser Richmond in 1945 - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard wartime-built hulls. The study's shipyard evidence centers on the West Coast emergency yards including the Kaiser operations.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1945 Kaiser-built steam troopship is era-consistent with asbestos-containing construction, and the 1968-69 conversion and 1984 scrapping have no materials record. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.

Archival leads (not retrieved - no reproduction orders authorized): (a) NARA RG 357.2.2, Records of the Special Review Committee on C-4 Ship Exchanges - case files on the C-4 Troopship Exchange Program, 1966-69; this hull's withdrawal under Ship Exchange Contract MA-4521 (Sea-Land allocation, vs. exchange ship LACKAWANNA MV) falls squarely inside that committee's remit and its case files may hold the conversion/allocation documentation. (b) NARA RG 178 (U.S. Maritime Commission) construction/outfitting records for MC hull 716 - the likeliest public repository for the as-built insulation schedule. (c) Navy deck logs (RG 24) for the 1945-46 commissioned period. Finding
Source discrepancies resolved or flagged: (a) DANFS header prints the class as 'General A. O. Squier' - typo for General G. O. Squier (lead ship named for Maj. Gen. George Owen Squier); NavSource and class literature use G. O. Squier. (b) Decommission site: DANFS says the ship arrived New York 27 May 1946 and 'decommissioned there 12 June'; NavSource and the MARAD status card place decommission/delivery at Hoboken, N.J. - Hoboken adopted. (c) MARAD return date: NavSource gives 7 March 1960 (Beaumont custody entry, per status card) while DANFS says 'June 1960'; the status card shows custody 3-7-60 and permanent title transfer 6-30-60 - both dates are real events. (d) Sea-Land transfer: title 4-11-68 at Washington, D.C. vs physical delivery 4-18-68 at Beaumont - both on the card; NavSource uses the 11 April date, the MARAD milestone the 18th. (e) USAT delivery: status card 8-30-46 vs NavSource 'commissioned USAT 20 August 1946' - unresolved. (f) Scrapping port: card records sale to Han Sung Salvage Co. (Korea) 6/15/84 only; secondary sources variously say Incheon, Korea or Taiwan - unresolved. (g) Struck dates: NavalCoverMuseum lists 3 July 1946 and 'July 1960'; NavSource gives 10 July 1946 and 1 September 1960 - NavSource adopted as the more consistent secondary. (h) Containership-conversion yard: the MARAD card does not name it; secondary sources (Wikipedia; the 'firsttransport' research blog) attribute the deepening/rebuild to Alabama Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Co., Mobile, AL - consistent with the rename to MOBILE but not verified by a primary source; carried here only because the related_shipyards linkage uses it.
