She was named Geronimo and reclassified YTM-119, 15 May 1944. She served in the 14th Naval District at Pearl Harbor as a service craft until being placed out of service at Honolulu 30 August 1946. Geronimo was struck from the Navy List 30 December 1946 and was sold by the War Assets Administration to John Hanson 13 July 1948.' Spec block: dp. 270; l. 110'6"; b. 24'; dr. 8'1".

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS compresses the naming into the reclassification sentence - the name was in use earlier (ev-02 lists her as 'Geronimo' on 7 Dec 1941). Out-of-service date (30 Aug 1946) and sale date (13 Jul 1948) conflict with NavSource/NavalCoverMuseum (30 Apr 1946 / 23 Jul 1948) - see gaps. Length (110'6") conflicts with NavSource (98').

The official NHHC list places Geronimo, hull number YT-119, inside Pearl Harbor (area inside the nets) at 0800 local time on 7 December 1941, under 'District Craft Harbor Tugs (YT)', alongside Sotoyomo (YT-9), Osceola (YT-129), YT-130, Nokomis (YT-142), Hoga (YT-146), YT-152, and YT-153. Geronimo carries no sunk/destroyed marker and no note; the list preamble counts both commissioned ships and non-commissioned district craft.

Does not establish her berth, her actions during the attack, damage status beyond absence of the sunk/destroyed marker, or any material/asbestos content. NARA-held footage and photography document this hull at work at Pearl Harbor Navy Yard on 9 April 1942: still frames show Geronimo (YT-119) moving USS California (BB-44) to drydock and standing by as the refloated battleship crosses the drydock sill. This is physical-presence documentation of the tug's wartime work inside the Navy Yard - the working environment context for her crew.

It further documents the 15 May 1944 fleet-wide reclassification scope: all surviving early-group YTs (119, 128, 129, 133, 134) went to YTM (Harbor Tug, Medium) while later-built harbor tugs went to YTB - confirming why this hull became YTM rather than YTB.

    Finding
A diesel-electric harbor tug built 1932-33 at a U.S. Navy yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era (GAO: Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships until substitution began in the early 1970s; this hull's entire 1933-46 service predates substitution). Era-standard applications aboard a small diesel-electric harbor craft of this period: engine-room and machinery insulation, diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical/wire insulation. As a diesel-electric craft she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

The yard where this tug spent her entire 1933-46 service - and where she is photographed working the drydocks in April 1942 - is a documented asbestos site: a retrospective cohort of 7,971 male Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard workers found mesothelioma incidence of 67.3 per million men/year versus 5.8 statewide (11.6x; 7 mesotheliomas in the resident subset, 1977-1982); a 1994 case-control study associated Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard work with an approximately 10-fold mesothelioma increase (OR 10.1, 95% CI 2.6-56.6); EPA documents asbestos contamination around Dry Dock 3, in multiple buildings, and in pipe systems across the 148-acre complex (NPL site HI6170024339).

The only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content (asbestos-ships.com 'SS Geronimo' page - which targets a merchant hull, not this tug) asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. CourtListener coverage this session was partial under fleet pacing - see ledger for exact query status.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1932-built naval vessel operated inside the Navy's documented asbestos era. Deck logs, 14th Naval District and Pearl Harbor Navy Yard correspondence/work records (RG 24, RG 181), and the War Assets Administration sale file are undigitized leads. DISAMBIGUATION: the second Geronimo (ATA-207) is a different vessel - an auxiliary ocean tug built by Gulfport Boiler and Welding Works, Port Arthur, TX; originally designated ATR-134; launched 4 January 1945 as ATA-207; commissioned 1 March 1945 (Lt. Joseph K. Hawkins); name Geronimo assigned 16 July 1948; served the Pacific war (Leyte, Guadalcanal, Noumea, Eniwetok), decommissioned 19 September 1947 at Orange, TX, and loaned in 1962 to the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries as a research ship. Any source attributing ocean-tug service, a 1944-45 build, or post-1962 oceanographic service to 'Geronimo' does not describe this harbor tug.
