- DANFS record for this hull: the second Gettysburg (PCE-904) was laid down 18 February 1943 by Willamette Iron & Steel Corp., Portland, Oregon; launched 9 September 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Margaret Mashofsky; commissioned USS PCE-904 31 May 1945, Lt. Decommissioned at New London 2 September 1955 and entered the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Named Gettysburg 15 February 1956; sold for scrapping to Boston Metals Co., Baltimore, Md., 23 June 1960. Spec block: dp. 640; l. 184'6"; b. 33'1"; dr. 9'5"; s. 15.7 k.; cl. PCE-842.

- Willamette Iron & Steel construction trades 1943-45; wartime and reserve-training crew (design complement ~99)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents construction and service history, not materials or asbestos content. Transcription carries OCR artifacts: '1868' printed for the 1863 battle date; 'cpl. 90' where NavSource and the historycentral DANFS mirror carry 99; 'Gcttysberg' typo. Cited via Wayback capture because live NHHC DANFS pages 404 and hazegray.org is unreachable - labeled archived per citation policy. Does not state a striking date.

- Limitations
- Official but summary-level record; corroborates DANFS dates and confirms the renaming/sale. Contains no materials or asbestos information. Minor internal inconsistency on the index page ('circa 1945-56' vs detail page '1945-46') - the 1945-46 reading is consistent with the pre-name period.

- Limitations
- Volunteer-compiled secondary archive consistent with DANFS on all milestone dates; not an asbestos source. Displacement figure (850 t.) differs from the DANFS spec block (640) - both carried in the record, conflict noted in gaps. Source misspells builder as 'Williamette'. Armament detail differs slightly from the DANFS spec block (DANFS lists 4 20mm, NavSource 5 single 20mm plus three twin 40mm).

- Finding
- GAO program-level documentation that the Navy specified and used asbestos insulation aboard ships through this hull's build-and-service era. Places PCE-904's 1943-45 construction and 1945-55 service inside the documented Navy asbestos-insulation era. Era-standard applications for a steel-hulled diesel-drive patrol craft of this period: thermal insulation, machinery and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation.

- Navy ship construction and overhaul trades, asbestos-insulation era (class context)
- Limitations
- Program-level context; does not name this hull or this class and does not establish that asbestos was installed aboard PCE-904. Product-page description used because gao.gov blocks automated fetch (HTTP 403) - same standing defect as BATCH-01/BATCH-98. Full-text pull remains an open lead.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-gettysburg-pce904-01 through sl-uss-gettysburg-pce904-14
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, adjudicated asbestos finding, or qualifying case naming PCE-904 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger - including CourtListener name/hull and asbestos-variant queries returning only non-vessel collisions). The hull was sold for scrap in 1960, before the OSHA/EPA asbestos-regulation era, so no regulated abatement record was expected.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-45 steel naval patrol craft is era-consistent with asbestos-containing insulation and consumables. Does not establish that asbestos is or was present in any quantity, and does not establish or defeat any individual exposure or legal-eligibility claim.
