DANFS record for this hull: launched 28 May 1943 by Consolidated Steel Corp., Los Angeles, Calif., sponsored by Miss Shirley Schlichtman; commissioned 1 October 1943, Lt. Comdr. Harold J. Doebler, USCG, in command; shakedown off Southern California; sailed San Diego 12 January 1944, reached Cairns, Australia, 17 February; antisubmarine/antiaircraft escort based in New Guinea protecting merchantmen until fall 1944; Morotai assault September 1944 (sailed Humboldt Bay 14 September, returned 24 September); on 5 December 1944 escorting a Hollandia-to-Leyte convoy when Japanese planes sank SS Antoine Saugrain ('Sauprain' in the ibiblio transcription) and severely damaged SS Marcus Daly - convoy brought safely into Leyte; departed Leyte 8 December, moored Boston 24 January 1945; overhaul; Casco Bay 28 March, Seattle 26 April, then Cold Bay, Alaska; decommissioned there (DANFS reads 12 June 1945) and simultaneously transferred to the Soviet Navy (DANFS reads renamed 'EK-42'); returned by the USSR at Yokosuka 16 November 1949; recommissioned 11 October 1950; December 1950 patrols off Hungnam, Pusan, and Inchon, Korea; Korean Presidential Unit Citation; decommissioned 29 October 1951 and transferred to the Government of Thailand as Tachin (PF-1); struck from the Navy List 20 November 1951; five WWII battle stars and four Korean battle stars. Spec block: dp. 1,264; l. 303'11"; b. 37'6"; dr. 13'8"; s. 20.3 k.; cpl. 190; a. 3 3"; cl. Tacoma.

Consolidated Steel construction trades (1943); wartime and Korean-era crew - Coast Guard-manned (design complement 190)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Two values in the entry are demonstrably wrong against the NHC's Project Hula monograph and the January 1949 Naval Vessel Register: the decommission/transfer date ('12 June 1945' vs documented 12 July 1945) and the Soviet designation ('EK-42' vs EK-6) - see ev-04. The canonical NHHC DANFS URL returns 404; text carried via the live NHHC photography page and the verbatim ibiblio/HyperWar transcription.

Official USCG Historian record for this hull: builder Consolidated Steel Corp., Los Angeles, CA; propulsion '2-shaft VTE, 3 boilers' (vertical triple-expansion reciprocating steam plant - correcting Wikipedia's 'turbines' rendering); complement 190; draft 12'8" fl; displacement 2,230 tons; range 9,500 nm at 12 knots. Confirms the DANFS service narrative verbatim and identifies the ship as Coast Guard-officered (LCDR Harold J. Doebler, USCG), consistent with the Coast Guard-manned Tacoma-class program.

NavSource record for this hull: laid down 6 April 1943 as patrol gunboat PG-144 under a Maritime Commission contract (MC type T. S2-S2-AQ1) by Consolidated Steel Corp., Ltd., Wilmington, CA; redesignated patrol frigate PF-36 on 15 April 1943; launched 28 May 1943; commissioned 1 October 1943; decommissioned at Cold Bay, Alaska (page reads 'Cold Harbor' - sic), transferred under Lend-Lease to the Soviet Union and renamed EK-6, with the note that the Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 lists the transfer date as July 1945; Pacific Fleet assignment 23 July 1945; returned to U.S. custody 16 November 1949 at Yokosuka and laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet; recommissioned 11 October 1950; decommissioned 29 October 1951, transferred on loan to Thailand as HTMS Tachin (PF-1); struck 20 November 1951; reclassified PF-411; decommissioned 22 June 2000 and preserved as a memorial. Specifications: 1,430 t light / 2,415 t full; 303'11" x 37'6" x 13'8"; 20.3 kts; complement 214; propulsion two 3-drum express boilers and two 5,500 ihp J. Hendy Iron Works engines on two shafts. Commanding officers: LCDR Harold Joseph Doebler, USCG (1 Oct 1943-1944); LCDR Ambrose Simko, USCGR (1944-12 July 1945). Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation - milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS; its own timeline and CO table conflict (12 June vs 12 July 1945 for the transfer/Simko relief - resolved by ev-04 to 12 July). Complement 214 conflicts with DANFS/USCG 190; boiler count (two) conflicts with USCG (three); 'Cold Harbor' is a page typo for Cold Bay. Contains no asbestos content.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
CORRECTION of two DANFS errors using the Naval Historical Center's own monograph (compiled with access to Soviet-era records): (1) Glendale's Soviet designation was EK-6 - the Appendix table 'U.S. Navy Combatant Ships Transferred to the USSR Under Project HULA' reads 'Glendale (PF 36) EK-6', not 'EK-42' as DANFS/USCG print; (2) the decommission/transfer date was 12 July 1945, not 12 June - Glendale arrived at Cold Bay 14 June 1945 among the first nine frigates (with Charlottesville PF-25, Long Beach PF-34, Belfast PF-35, San Pedro PF-37, Coronado PF-38, Allentown PF-52, Machias PF-53, Sandusky PF-54), Soviet 10th Frigate Division crews began training 14 June, and the first group of ten frigates (including Ogden PF-39, arrived 27 June) was transferred on 12 July 1945, departing Cold Bay 15 July. Narrative detail: Glendale sailed as part of Escort Division 25 (Long Beach flagship; Ogden, San Pedro, Glendale, Belfast, Coronado) which got underway 28 March 1945 for Seattle via the Canal Zone. Disposition in the Appendix: '1949-returned.'

    Limitations
Russell documents the transfer program, not shipboard materials - no asbestos content. The monograph's table settles the Soviet designator and transfer date against DANFS; the January 1949 Naval Vessel Register listing 'July 1945' (noted by NavSource) independently corroborates the July transfer.

    Finding
A Maritime Commission-contract steam frigate built April-October 1943 - peak wartime asbestos era - with a two-shaft vertical triple-expansion steam plant and boilers would have carried era-standard shipboard asbestos applications: boiler and steam-line insulation/lagging, machinery lagging, gaskets and valve packing, fireproofing, deck coverings, and electrical insulation. The GAO-documented Navy asbestos era covers this hull's entire U.S. service (1943-45, 1950-51) and its construction window.

    Finding
GAO reported that, according to the Navy, all ships contain some asbestos in components such as clutches and electric cables, and that thermal insulation was the Navy's major shipboard asbestos use; thermal-insulation specifications were changed to asbestos-free in 1973, the Navy's October 1975 policy removed/replaced insulation only when damaged or needed for repairs, and a January 1979 modification added selective replacement in high-maintenance areas (ships were still being delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978). The Navy-wide asbestos era documented here spans this hull's entire construction (1943) and U.S. service (1943-45, 1950-51).

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS Glendale (PF-36 / PG-144 / EK-6 / Tachin) was found in the official and authoritative public sources searched. The four required CourtListener base queries completed (see sl-06): exact-name opinion and docket searches returned zero; hull-number searches returned only name collisions ('PF 36' as legal-citation paragraph refs and filing/document codes, none naming a vessel), confirmed by the sanctioned 'PF-36 asbestos' variant on the overflowed docket query. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no museum/military hazmat disclosure for the 2000-01 dismantling; marketing listicles asserting asbestos aboard this hull (untraceable, no primary sourcing) are excluded by source policy.
