- Finding
- Peer-reviewed scholarship documents extensive asbestos use as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during the WWII era - the period in which this hull was converted from a commercial trawler to a Navy minesweeper at a commercial yard (September 1940 - March 1941). Materials typical of such conversions - machinery and exhaust insulation, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, fire-resistant joiner/panel materials, electrical cable insulation - commonly contained asbestos in this period.

- Conversion-yard trades (Bethlehem Atlantic Works, East Boston, 1940-41); ships company (1941-44)
- Limitations
- Era/program-level documentation only - the article does not name this vessel or conversion, and no class manual or hull record exists for this one-off converted trawler. Asbestos presence aboard this hull is era inference, not ship-proven. Her diesel plant (no boilers or steam lines) removes the principal steam-lagging pathway documented for steam vessels, narrowing but not eliminating the inference. Does not establish quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation.

- Limitations
- Volunteer-maintained archival compilation, not an official source - consistent with DANFS on all overlapping dates. The diesel-propulsion detail is asbestos-relevant (no boilers or steam plant aboard) but NavSource supplies no asbestos information; supports no asbestos claim. Its 'fate unknown' conflicts with secondary wreck reports (see ev-05).

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Goldfinch (AM-77), Fordham, Titus, or Beater was found in the public sources searched. The ship appears only in law-firm 'minesweeper asbestos' listicles, which are excluded under the batch source rules. CourtListener API opinion/docket searches were blocked this batch (2,800/day shared quota exhausted); indexed web searching returned only name-collision noise (see search_ledger).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1940-41 naval conversion at a commercial yard is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials having been installed. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility. The blocked CourtListener pass leaves the litigation check partially open - logged in gaps.

- Finding
- After the 1946 sale the vessel reverted to Fordham (1946-49), was renamed Titus (1949-60), then sold to Christensen Canadian Enterprises, renamed Beater, managed by Karlson Shipping, registered at St. John's and employed in the sealing trade. On 7 October 1962 Beater was driven ashore and wrecked at New Harbour, Nova Scotia, during Hurricane Daisy.

- Finding
