- DANFS record for this hull: Goshawk, formerly Penobscot, was built by the Foundation Co., Savannah, Ga., 1919, and purchased by the Navy from W. F. Henningsen of Seattle, Wash., 3 September 1940. She was converted to a minesweeper by Winslow Marine, Winslow, Wash., and commissioned at Seattle, Wash., 3 March 1941, Lt. (j.g.) Allan Dwight Curtis in command. Her designation was changed to AM-79 from AMc-4 on 25 November 1940. After shakedown she swept in Puget Sound and the San Juan de Fuca Straits out of Seattle; sailed for Alaska 6 October 1941 and swept channels between Sitka, Ketchikan, Adak, Seward, and Kodiak Island until 30 March 1942, then returned to Seattle for extensive refitting; resumed duty 18 August 1942 in the Seattle/Puget Sound area; returned to Alaska late 1943 as a combination minesweeper and small cargo vessel; reclassified IX-195 on 10 October 1944; returned to Seattle 9 June 1945 and decommissioned there 1 August 1945, continuing 'in service' transporting condemned ammunition for the 13th Naval District; stricken from the Navy List 3 January 1946; transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal 7 May 1946; subsequently sold to Alvin T. Davies of Tacoma, Wash. and renamed Bering Sea. Spec block: dp. 585; l. 150'; b. 25'; dr. 10'3"; s. 10 k.; a. 1 3".

- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The conversion and 1942 Seattle refit are documented as events; the refit yard is not named and any materials installed or removed are not described. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC DANFS page returns 404.

[2]Ships of the U.S. Navy, 1940-1945, IX - Unclassified Vessels list (HyperWar compilation from official U.S. Navy Ships' Data) [other_primary]
- Locator
- IX-195 row, IX unclassified vessels table
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The IX register lists 'IX-195 | Goshawk | 1944 | 563 | Converted from Minesweeper AM-79' - corroborating the DANFS-documented 10 October 1944 reclassification of this hull to unclassified miscellaneous auxiliary and giving an official-derived displacement figure (563) for the IX configuration.

- Limitations
- Compilation of official Ships' Data hosted by HyperWar; corroborates identity and reclassification only. The 563 displacement differs from the DANFS spec block's 585 - likely different load condition or configuration; carried as a noted variance, not resolved. Contains no asbestos or materials information.

- Finding
- Era inference: DANFS documents that this 1919-built commercial trawler was converted to a naval minesweeper by Winslow Marine, Winslow, WA (1940-41) and underwent 'extensive refitting' at Seattle (March-August 1942). Naval vessel conversions and shipyard refits of this era routinely installed or disturbed asbestos-containing insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and electrical materials; a wartime minesweeper conversion of a small motor vessel is era-consistent with those materials being present aboard.

- Winslow Marine conversion workers (1940-41); Seattle refit yard workers (1942); wartime crew
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - DANFS does not describe the materials installed or removed in the 1940-41 conversion or the 1942 refit, and no hull-specific materials record has been located. Does not establish that asbestos was or is aboard this hull, in what products, or in what quantity.

[4]GAO, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (Oct 18, 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text blocked, HTTP 403)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: standing policy (1975) removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - meaning original-era insulation typically remained in place for decades unless a yard period disturbed it.

- Population
- Navy shipyard workers; asbestos program review
- Limitations
- Program-level documentation; GAO fieldwork was at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, not this vessel's yards, and the report postdates this hull's naval service (disposed 1946). Supports era context for Navy asbestos practice generally, not any fact specific to this hull; full text not retrieved (gao.gov blocks automated fetch, HTTP 403) - description via product page.

- Secondary compilation for this hull: built 1919 as the steel-hulled trawler Eckmuhl by the Foundation Shipyard, Savannah, GA for the French Navy; acquired by W. F. Henningsen of Seattle and renamed Penobscot; renamed Goshawk 16 October 1940; conversion to minesweeper completed 20 March 1941; call sign Nan-Easy-Victor-William; propulsion one 450 shp New London Ship and Engine Co. (Nelsco) diesel, one shaft; the 3"/50 gun was removed on conversion to IX-195; fate after 1946 sale unknown.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer-compiled reference, not an official record - details beyond the DANFS narrative (rename date, conversion-completion date, Eckmuhl origin, Nelsco diesel figure) are unverified against primary documentation. Machinery claim conflicts with secondary yard records describing the 1919 French trawler type as steam-powered, implying a possible repowering; unresolved. Contains no asbestos information.

[6]ShipbuildingHistory (T. Colton), Foundation Company yard table, Savannah GA [other_primary]

- Foundation Company yard list, hull no. 21 row
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Secondary yard-build tabulation identifies this hull as Foundation Company hull no. 21, U.S. Official No. 221906, a 684-ton trawler named Eckmuhl completed August 1919 for the French Navy, with subsequent name chain 'Lexington 1933, Penobscot (AMc-4) 1938, Goshawk (AM-79) 1940, Bering Sea 1946.' For name-disambiguation: secondary references record that the earlier same-name Navy assignments (AM-2, and Lapwing-class AM-42) were cancelled in 1918 and never laid down - consistent with this hull being the only commissioned USS Goshawk.

- Limitations
- Secondary reference compiled from official registers (Official No. and yard hull number are register-type data) but not itself an official record; the Eckmuhl and Lexington names, the 1938 Penobscot renaming, and the AM-2/AM-42 cancellation details are unverified against primary documentation. The 684 figure is a merchant register tonnage, not directly comparable to DANFS's 585 displacement.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-goshawk-am79-01 through sl-uss-goshawk-am79-10
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located in the sources searched: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or official materials statement naming AM-79/IX-195 was found. General web search for litigation returned only law-firm SEO listicles that include 'USS Goshawk AM-79' in generic minesweeper tables - excluded as non-evidence. CourtListener could not be searched (API throttled, HTTP 429; web UI hung) so the absence of docketed asbestos litigation naming this hull is NOT established.

- Negative result is limited to the reachable sources in the search ledger; it does not prove no ship-specific record exists (NARA holds undigitized conversion/material records - see archival lead ev-08), and the litigation surface is specifically unverified due to CourtListener throttling. Absence of a located record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard.
