- DANFS record for this hull: built by Defoe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City, Mich.; laid down and partially completed as destroyer escort DE-710; sponsored by Mrs. E. N. Gosselin; commissioned [at New Orleans] 31 December 1944, Lt. Comdr. Joseph B. Fyffe; namesake Ensign Edward Webb Gosselin killed aboard USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941. Service: shakedown Bermuda/Chesapeake; departed Norfolk 16 February 1945; Okinawa screen from 6 April 1945; convoy duty Guam/Saipan 10-27 April; Okinawa screen through May (one Japanese plane shot down per DANFS; bracketed war-diary note claims 3 planes, 1 submarine); upkeep mostly Leyte Gulf 1 June - 17 July; departed Okinawa 17 August with Reeves; carried press representatives and Navy photographers; among first Allied ships into Sagami Wan 27 August 1945 (with Missouri, Iowa, HMS Duke of York); entered Tokyo Bay 28 August with San Diego for Yokosuka occupation; transferred 29 August to Commodore R. W. Simpson's POW-evacuation task group - her boats first to reach Omori Camp; barracks ship at Yokosuka Port Director's office 27 September - 15 December 1945; San Francisco 28 December. Tsingtao-based China service August 1948 - February 1949 (Shanghai, Nanking, Yangtze River). Decommissioned San Diego 11 July 1949; Pacific Reserve Fleet San Diego Group; struck from the Navy List 1 April 1964 (transcription misprints 1984); sold for scrapping. One battle star for WWII service.

- Population
- Defoe Shipbuilding construction trades 1944; wartime crew (cpl. 204 plus embarked troops); embarked Naval Assault Battalion / POW-evacuation personnel 1945
- Limitations
- DANFS documents builder, designations, service history, and disposition - not materials or asbestos content. Two transcription-era defects: it prints 'launched 17 February 1944' with no keel date (secondary compilations read keel 17 February, launched 4-5 May 1944) and misprints the striking year as 1984 (all other sources, 1964); both carried in gaps. Commissioning location '[at New Orleans]' is a bracketed editorial insertion; a NavSource program caption reads Bay City. Mirror cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a secondary index; the photographs are official US Navy/Navy Yard Mare Island images and the captions state the overhaul window, but the yard work scope and materials handled are not described - establishes the hull underwent a documented naval-yard availability, not what was disturbed. Specification block source is not itemized on the page.

- Finding
- A ship-specific primary record exists at NARA: the ship's own report of operations for the Tokyo Bay occupation period 18 August - 2 September 1945, filed 2 October 1945, within the WWII War Diaries/operational records series. War diaries of this type typically include personnel, movements, and sometimes material-condition remarks; hull-specific maintenance/material detail, if any, would be in the document itself.

[5]DANFS specifications block (Rudderow class; 24 kt) + NavSource APD spec block (2 B&W 'D' Express boilers 435 psi/750 F, GE turbo-electric drive, 12,000 shp) + Atlas shipyard dataset, Mare Island Naval Shipyard record (tier 2; documented products incl. Unibestos, Kaylo, Marinite, Transite, Careytemp, packing, gaskets, refractory) + Navy Dept spec 32F3a 'Felt, Insulating, Asbestos' (Oct 1945, archival lead carried from the class-fleet evidence record) [other_primary]

- DANFS/NavSource spec blocks; shipyards.json 'mare-island-naval-shipyard'; spec 32F3a via class-fleet evidence (see search ledger)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/design inference: a Rudderow-class (TEV) hull built 1944 with two superheated 'D' Express boilers feeding turbo-electric machinery at 12,000 shp would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation - boiler and fireroom insulation, steam-line and turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets, machinery packing, and fireproofing; Navy specification 32F3a ('Felt, Insulating, Asbestos', Oct 1945) documents the era's specified insulating material. The hull's documented 10 Jan - 8 Mar 1946 overhaul at Mare Island Naval Shipyard was at a tier-2 Atlas yard with documented asbestos products in its industrial record - a yard-level exposure context for that availability, not a hull finding. Builder Defoe Shipbuilding (Bay City) is not in the yard dataset; its asbestos-era record is undocumented here.

- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - no ship-specific asbestos finding exists for this hull (see ev-05/ev-06 negative findings). The 32F3a specification and the Mare Island yard record establish era material classes and yard-level documentation, not materials installed aboard or disturbed on DE-710/APD-126. NARA GIB retrieval not performed.

- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located in CourtListener opinion or RECAP docket indexes: 'USS Gosselin' returned zero opinion hits and zero docket hits; 'Gosselin' + asbestos returned 9 opinion hits and 92 docket hits that are all surname collisions - attorneys (Pahl & Gosselin; Jason P. Gosselin; Timothy R. Gosselin; Zimmermann, Koomer, Connolly, Finkel & Gosselin) and asbestos-plaintiff party names (Gosselin v. Owens Illinois, D. Mass. 1:88-cv-01057; GOSSELIN v. OWENS-ILLINOIS, E.D. Pa. 2:10-cv-83414; GOSSELIN v. A-C PRODUCT LIABILITY TRUST, E.D. Pa. 2:10-cv-54742), none referencing the vessel in indexed text. Hull-number searches produced only identifier collisions: 'APD-126' (0 opinions; 2 dockets incl. Albuquerque police-misconduct context - 'APD' = Albuquerque Police Dept.) and 'DE-710' (3 opinions, all unrelated; 128 dockets, docket/exhibit fragment matches incl. a pharma-MDL cluster).

- Limitations
- CourtListener coverage is not the full docket universe (state courts and unindexed federal dockets are outside it); a zero or collision-only result means no indexed opinion or RECAP docket text names the ship as a vessel, not that no claim was ever filed. Whether the plaintiff surnamed Gosselin in the Owens-Illinois asbestos dockets served aboard this ship cannot be determined from index-level data - classified as collisions. MDL-875 ship-list exhibits and unpublished state pleadings are only partially indexed.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull ACM survey, no abatement or remediation record, no hazmat disclosure, and no docketed case naming USS Gosselin / DE-710 / APD-126 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was sold for scrapping in 1965, so no museum-condition or present-day ACM documentation exists.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 turbo-electric steam hull is era-consistent with asbestos insulation. Does not establish or defeat any individual exposure or eligibility claim. NARA deck logs, the ship's war diary (ev-03), and BuShips General Information Book material are unretrieved archival leads.
