DANFS record for this hull: named for Private First Class George Francis Grady, USMC, killed in action on Gavutu, Solomon Islands, 7 August 1942 and posthumously awarded the Navy Cross; launched 2 April 1944 by Federal Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Newark, N.J., sponsored by Miss Margaret Grady, sister of the namesake; commissioned 11 September 1944, Lt. Comdr. Francis R. King in command; shakedown at Bermuda 2 October-2 November 1944; sailed via Norfolk (escorting transport Chilton) and the Panama Canal to San Diego, arriving 4 December, then Pearl Harbor 15 December; operated with Saratoga (CV-3) on flight qualifications through 23 December, rescuing three downed aviators; departed 26 December for Eniwetok and Ulithi (arrived 10 January 1945); escorted a tanker group refueling 3d Fleet units during Formosa/China-coast air strikes; screened escort carriers off Iwo Jima from 10 February and patrolled the anti-submarine screen during the 19 February assault; Saipan 5 March, Espiritu Santo 19 March; convoy to Okinawa arriving off the beaches 9 April; radar/antisubmarine picket duty - with Metcalf downed one kamikaze 16 April at station D-37; escorted five fast transports to Saipan 5-16 May; picket duty off Okinawa until 28 June; Leyte Gulf 1 July; offshore patrol vessel in the Philippines until 5 November 1945 with two convoy voyages to Okinawa; returned via Manila Bay and Pearl Harbor to San Pedro 26 November; towed to San Diego and decommissioned 2 July 1946 (San Diego Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet); placed 'In Service in Reserve' 27 April 1947 as a Naval Reserve Training vessel under the 13th Naval District at Bellingham, Wash. (2-3 week reserve cruises); 'In Commission In Reserve' 1 August 1950 and recommissioned in the active fleet 21 November 1950 under the 12th Naval District at San Francisco as NRT ship and school ship for Fleet Sonar School, San Diego; decommissioned 18 December 1957 and placed in reserve at Stockton, Calif. Three battle stars for World War II service. Specifications block: 1,350 tons, 306 ft, 36 ft 8 in beam, 24 kt, complement 186, class styled 'John G. Butler'.

    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The entry does not state the keel date, stricken date, or disposal; its spec block reads 'cl. John G. Butler' (a DANFS typographical error for John C. Butler) and complement 186 where secondary compilations read 215 - conflicts carried in gaps. Secondary compilation record for this hull: keel laid 3 January 1944 at Federal Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Newark, N.J.; launched and christened 2 April 1944; commissioned 11 September 1944 at Pier 'G', New York Navy Yard (commissioning officer Cmdr. H. W. Sasse; Lcdr Francis R. King in command); photographed 23 September 1944 underway to the Deperming Station, Bayonne Terminal Dock, for deperming/degaussing after commissioning; decommissioned at San Diego 2 July 1946; placed 'in service, in reserve' 27 April 1947 assigned to NRT, 13th Naval District, Bellingham, Wash.; recommissioned 21 November 1950 assigned to NRT, 12th Naval District, Naval Station Treasure Island, San Francisco; decommissioned 18 December 1957 at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard, Hunters Point, custody to CO San Francisco Group, U.S. Pacific Reserve Fleet; struck from the NVR 30 June 1968 (12 years 5 months total service); sold for scrapping June 1969. Photo record also documents a 26 May 1954 Mare Island Channel transit (with Harry E. Hubbard, DD-748) and a July 1955 Vancouver, B.C. port call during the NRT era.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-maintained secondary archive, not an official record - dates are consistent with DANFS where the two overlap (launch, commission, decommissionings) and with the class profile and uboat.net, but the keel date, stricken date, and disposal are not confirmed against the primary NVR page (pre-1987 disposals are excluded from the live register). Establishes no asbestos facts.

    Finding
Era/design inference: this hull's plant was the John C. Butler-class geared-turbine (WGT) installation - two superheated 'D'-type express boilers (435 psi / 750 deg F; Babcock & Wilcox for the DE-438-452 block per navypedia) driving two Westinghouse geared steam turbines at 12,000 shp. A superheated-steam plant of 1944 construction would have carried period-standard asbestos applications: boiler and steam-drum insulation, steam-line lagging, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Sister-hull litigation (USS Charles E. Brannon DE-446 - this hull's adjacent-number sister, built at the same yard and later photographed in company with Grady; Jack v. Borg-Warner Morse Tec, W.D. Wash. 2:17-cv-00537, pretrial stage) identifies the era insulation-spec suite for these ships: BuShips Manual ch. 39 Thermal Insulation NAVSHIPS 250-000(39) (1945) and Navy Dept spec 32F3a 'Felt, Insulating, Asbestos' (Oct 1945).

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No material schedule, insulation plan, or ship-specific spec for DE-445 was located; the named spec suite derives from litigation against a sister hull (DE-446) and is an archival lead, not a finding for this hull. Establishes no quantity, no individual exposure, no present-day material.

    Finding
Builder-yard documentation: an Owens-Illinois industrial health survey of the yard that built this hull documented insulator work with Johns-Manville Superex asbestos pipe covering and boiler insulation in confined shipyard spaces, with dust counts measured during cutting and fitting operations. The survey was conducted 30 August-2 September 1944 - while this hull was in final fitting-out at the same yard (launched 2 April, commissioned 11 September 1944) - documenting product lines in use at the builder's yard during this hull's own construction window (Superex documented 1940-1948 at this yard).

Shipyard insulators and pipefitters at Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock, Kearny, 1944
    Limitations
Yard-level document, not a hull record - the survey does not name DE-445 or any vessel. Temporal overlap with this hull's fitting-out is exact, but the survey establishes that asbestos products were being worked at the builder's yard, not which specific products were installed aboard this hull. Survey by a manufacturer with commercial interest; dust counts in mppcf (pre-fiber-count era).

Archival lead: deck logs for this hull (1944-46 commissioned service; 1950-57 NRT commission) are within NARA's Navy deck-log series (RG 24); WWII-era logs were included in the NOAA/NARA digitization collaboration and may be retrievable in the National Archives Catalog (series 594258) or from textual reference at Archives II. Deck logs would document underway periods, yard availabilities, and material-condition events relevant to any exposure analysis but do not inventory materials.

Sweep covers indexed CourtListener opinion text and RECAP docket metadata only; PACER full-text and state-court filings are outside coverage. A name match is not a finding; absence of a located docket does not prove no claim was ever filed (many asbestos cases settle or are filed only in state court). 'Grady' is also a common surname; the exact-name and hull-number queries above were run without a bare-surname query to avoid unclassifiable noise.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-445: no hull ACM survey, no abatement contract, no museum or donation hazmat disclosure (the hull was scrapped in 1969 and never in museum custody), no MARAD vessel history card located, and no qualifying litigation naming the hull in the sources searched (see search_ledger). Ship-specific asbestos documentation status: unknown.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 steam-powered destroyer escort would have been built amid the Navy's peak asbestos era; the finding documents the state of public records, not the hull's material condition. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
