- DANFS record for this hull: ex-PG-209, ex-MC Hull 1973; launched under Maritime Commission contract 9 February 1944 by the American Shipbuilding Co., Cleveland, Ohio; sponsored by Mrs. C. I. Carlson; commissioned at the Coast Guard Yard, Curtis Bay, Md., 29 January 1945, Lt. Cmdr. Henry P. Kniskern, USCG, in command. Manned by a Coast Guard crew; outfitting and conversion at Curtis Bay for weather patrol duty; cleared Baltimore 14 February 1945 for Bermuda shakedown via Norfolk, then escort duty to Guantanamo Bay and Kingston, Jamaica; arrived Boston 23 March for further conversion to air-sea rescue and weather patrol ship; sailed 11 April, ASW exercises out of Casco Bay, arrived Argentia, Newfoundland, 22 April; ten months of air-sea rescue and weather patrol with occasional escort missions operating out of Newfoundland, the Azores, and Recife, Brazil; returned to Boston 17 February 1946; decommissioned 14 March 1946; stricken from the Navy List 23 April 1947; sold for scrapping 22 April 1948 to the Southern Shipbuilding Co., New Orleans, La. Spec block: dp. 1,264; l. 303'11"; b. 37'6"; dr. 13'8"; s. 20 k.; cpl. 190; a. 3 3"; cl. Tacoma.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Live NHHC page was reachable this session (unlike the standing link-rot pattern for other hulls). The older hazegray/losthistory.net transcription of this same entry reads '11 February 1946' for the Boston return - conflict carried in gaps. Does not publish a laid-down date.

- NavSource record for this hull: MC Type T. S2-S2-AQ1; originally authorized as patrol gunboat PG-209; reclassified patrol frigate PF-101, 15 April 1943; laid down under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 1973) by the American Shipbuilding Co., Cleveland, Ohio; launched 9 February 1944; delivered and commissioned USS Greensboro (PF-101) 29 January 1945 at Curtis Bay, MD; decommissioned 14 March 1946 at Boston, MA; struck from the Navy Register 23 April 1947 and transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal; sold for scrap 22 April 1948 to the Southern Shipbuilding Co. of New Orleans, LA - with the note that the Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 lists the sales date as February 1948. Specifications include propulsion of two 240-psi three-drum express boilers and two 5,500-ihp J. Hendy Iron Works vertical triple-expansion engines on two shafts, and the armament note that the after 3-inch gun was removed and a weather-balloon hangar added for her weather-ship conversion. Photography includes National Archives image 26-G-2870 (USCG series) and NHHC photo NH 53780.

- Limitations
- NavSource aggregates official records and contributor material; its spec block (displacement 1,430 t., complement 176) conflicts with the DANFS block - variants carried in gaps. NavSource publishes no laid-down date for this hull. The CO table lists LCDR Steel's command ending 11 September 1946, six months after decommissioning - flagged in gaps, not asserted.

- Finding
- Builder-location correction/corroboration: the Maritime Commission contract table records AMERICAN SB, CLEVELAND, OH holding builder's hulls 1014-1017 = MC hulls 1971-1974, design S2-S2-AQ1, under contract MCc-8823 (supplemental order dated 28 May 1943) - MC Hull 1973 (this vessel) was AmShip Cleveland yard hull 1016. The independent AmShip Cleveland production table lists yard hull 1016 as 'PF 101, Greensboro, U.S. Mar. Comm., S2-S2-AQ1, Jan-45, Weather ship 1945, scrapped 1947'. The Lorain yard built the separate MC hull blocks 1481-1484 and 1965-1970 (PF-15..18, PF-93..98). Secondary sources (e.g., Wikipedia infobox) that place this hull's construction at Lorain, Ohio are therefore inconsistent with the contract and yard records.

- Limitations
- shipscribe/shipbuildinghistory are secondary compilations of official Maritime Commission records, not the primary documents themselves; DANFS and NavSource independently state Cleveland and are the primary citations for builder_location. The correction resolves a circulating secondary-source error but a user relying only on Wikipedia would see Lorain - hence this row.

- Finding
- Class/era inference: a Maritime Commission T. S2-S2-AQ1 steam frigate built 1943-44 with a twin-boiler, twin triple-expansion-engine steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos applications - boiler and steam-drum insulation, steam-line lagging between boiler and engine spaces, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, and compartment/bulkhead insulation - consistent with documented Maritime Commission and Navy construction practice of the period.

- Limitations
- Design/era inference only - no document located names asbestos aboard this hull. The MC operating-manual analogy used for other steam types (e.g., EC2-S-C1 in ss-jeremiah-obrien) was not located for the AQ1 design; inference rests on propulsion type and construction era, not on a class-specific materials document. Does not establish quantity, location, or present-day content; the hull was scrapped in 1948.

- environmental_record
- Finding
- Facility-level record for the yard where this hull was commissioned and outfitted for weather-patrol duty (29 January-14 February 1945): the ATSDR PHA documents that the Yard was added to the EPA National Priorities List in September 2002, and that 'from the late 1940s through 1963, the Former Burn Pit was used for the disposal and intermittent incineration of liquids, solid waste, oil, batteries, scrap metal, and asbestos-containing materials (TetraTech 2002)'. The PHA establishes that asbestos-containing materials were handled and disposed of at this facility in the era immediately following this vessel's outfitting there.

- Coast Guard Yard workforce and adjacent community, late 1940s-1963
- Limitations
- Facility-level record only - the PHA does not name this vessel or any vessel, does not establish that asbestos work was performed on this hull, and its documented ACM-disposal window (late 1940s-1963) begins after the ship's January-March 1945 presence at the Yard. ATSDR's overall conclusion was that the site posed no public-health threat as assessed. The PHA is a contamination-pathway assessment, not a shipboard materials survey.

- Peer-reviewed federal cohort study (NCI) of 4,702 civilian workers employed at the U.S. Coast Guard shipyard (Curtis Bay - the service's sole shipbuilding and repair yard) between 1 January 1950 and 31 December 1964, followed through 2001: mesothelioma SMR 5.07 (95% CI 1.85-11.03) among all men, rising with employment duration (SMR 4.23 <10 years; 6.27 >=10 years); the authors conclude the excess mortality 'is probably related to asbestos exposure.' Documents an asbestos-related mortality signal in the civilian workforce of the facility that commissioned and outfitted this hull.

- Finding
- The USCG Historian's Office muster-roll finding aid for 1941-1949 lists 'USS Greensboro' among named vessels for 1945 (appearing twice, indicating rolls in two boxes) and 1946 - surviving muster rolls spanning the hull's entire commissioned life (29 January 1945-14 March 1946) exist in Coast Guard records (RG 26) at the National Archives. These rolls are the crew-level documentation lead for identifying individuals who served aboard.

CourtListener could not be searched this session - the fleet request budget was spent - so litigation status is open, not negative.
