    Finding
DANFS identifies Greenwich Bay (AVP-41) as a Barnegat-class small seaplane tender named for a bay off the Rhode Island coast, launched 17 March 1945 by Lake Washington Shipyard at Houghton, Washington, sponsored by Mrs. Francis B. Johnson (wife of the Commander Fleet Air Wing 6), and commissioned 20 May 1945 under Commander Peter F. Boyle. DANFS specifications: displacement 1,766 tons, length 310'9", beam 41'1", draft 13'6", speed 18 knots, armament 1 x 5-inch and 6 x 40mm, complement 315.

    Finding
DANFS chronology: Greenwich Bay sailed 30 April 1949 to become flagship for Commander, U.S. Navy Middle East Force, a duty repeated annually with 4- to 6-month operations in the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean, including People-to-People medical-supply work for Arabian and African nations. In June 1950 her crew flew six search-and-rescue missions after Air France crashes at Bahrein on 13 and 15 June, her launch rescuing nine survivors on 15 June and earning commendation from the Arabian and French governments. During the 1956 Suez Crisis she extended her cruise and returned via the Cape of Good Hope. DANFS records embarked dignitaries (King Ibn Saud, the Shah of Iran, Haile Selassie, the Shaikh of Kuwait) and 15 Mediterranean deployments, and states she was struck from the Navy List 1 July 1966 and sold to Boston Metals Co., Baltimore, Md.

    Limitations
The DANFS text was written while the ship was in service (present-tense 'every year since then she has repeated this duty') and therefore does not cover the June 1966 decommissioning; the strike date (1 July 1966) and purchaser appear in the closing line but the sale date does not. No asbestos, overhaul-scope, or material content anywhere in the entry.

    Finding
The Naval Historical Center's Online Library ship page describes Greenwich Bay as a 1,766-ton Barnegat-class small seaplane tender built at Houghton, Washington, commissioned May 1945; summarizes her China Coast and 1946-1948 service; states she served as flagship for Commander, U.S. Navy Middle East Force in annual deployments 'in rotation with two sisters, Duxbury Bay (AVP-38) and Valcour (AVP-55)'; and records that she 'was decommissioned in June 1966 and sold for scrapping in May 1967.' BuShips photograph captions (19-N-87294, 19-N-87295) show her underway near the builder's yard on 16 May 1945, and caption NH 97640 documents her refueling a VP-44 P5M on 24 May 1955 'wearing the white paint of a Middle East Force flagship.'

The Naval Historical Center's 'Mediterranean Transit, 1961' photo page reproduces period curator text: in mid-1961 Greenwich Bay, 'commanded by Capt. E.P. Aurand,' transited the Mediterranean en route to the Persian Gulf 'to serve as flagship for Rear Admiral E.B. Grantham, Commander Middle East Force,' carrying the nickname 'Green Witch' and operating from 'her home away from home in the Persian Gulf, Bahrein Island.' Photo captions place her at Barcelona in late May or early June 1961 with liberty visits to Cannes/Valberg, Civitavecchia/Rome, Naples, and Capri before the Suez transit.

Greenwich Bay, commissioned in May 1945, is a pre-1983 Navy hull.
