- DANFS record for this hull: (DD-82: dp. 1,191; l. 314'4"; b. 30'11"; dr. 9'2"; s. 34.75 k.; a. 4 4", 12 21" tt.; cpl. 141; cl. Wickes). Launched by the Fore River Ship Building Co., Quincy, Mass.; sponsored by Mrs. George S. Trevor, great-granddaughter of Admiral Gregory; commissioned 1 June 1918, Comdr. Arthur P. Fairfield in command. Sailed for Brest 25 June 1918 and escorted convoys between French and British ports; assigned to the patrol squadron at Gibraltar 2 November 1918; Adriatic and Mediterranean relief missions into 1919. Reserve tours at Tompkinsville, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and the Philadelphia Navy Yard; local operations out of Charleston 1921-22; decommissioned at the Philadelphia Navy Yard 7 July 1922. Recommissioned 4 November 1940 as APD-3 after conversion to a high-speed transport ('stripped of virtually all their armament to make room for boats'); joined Little, Colhoun, and McKean in Transport Division 12. Departed Charleston 27 January 1942 for the Pacific; landed Marines in the first assault waves at Guadalcanal 7 August 1942; patrolled Iron Bottom Sound and ferried ammunition and supplies from Espiritu Santo. On the night of 4-5 September 1942, while patrolling between Guadalcanal and Savo Island with Little after landing a Marine Raider battalion on Savo, she was illuminated by a string of flares dropped by a Navy pilot and engaged by Japanese destroyers Yudachi, Hatsuyuki, and Murakumo at 0100; dead in the water within three minutes, two boilers burst, decks aflame; sank stern first about 40 minutes after the firing began; all but 11 of her crew survived, including six who swam to Guadalcanal; commanding officer Lt. Comdr. Harry F. Bauer lost (posthumous Silver Star). Struck from the Navy List 2 October 1942; two battle stars for World War II.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Transcription reads 'launched 27 January 1915' - impossible given the 25 August 1917 laying-down documented by NavSource; 1918 is carried and the discrepancy is logged in gaps. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404. NavSource's APD-3 page header dates the loss '4 September 1942' - the DANFS narrative places the gunfire at 0100 on 5 September, the date carried here.

- NavSource build and APD-configuration record for this hull: laid down 25 August 1917 at Fore River Ship Building Co., Quincy, MA (Bethlehem yard hull no. 277 - a 1918 Library of Congress photograph captioned 'Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Fore River Shipyard' shows hulls 274-277 and 280-281 on the ways, Gregory = 277); launched 27 January 1918; commissioned USS Gregory (Destroyer No. 82) 1 June 1918; designated DD-82 17 July 1920; decommissioned at Philadelphia 7 July 1922; converted to a high-speed transport and reclassified APD-3 on 2 August 1940; recommissioned 4 November 1940. APD-3 specifications block: displacement 1,154 t (1,600 t full); 314'5" x 30'6" x 9'10"; 35.2 kt; complement 8 officers + 98 enlisted plus troop accommodations for 3 officers + 144 enlisted; 4 LCP(L) landing craft; armament 3x 3"/50 DP, 2x 40mm, 5x 20mm, depth-charge rack and 4 projectors. Propulsion (APD configuration): two Fore River Curtis-design geared turbines; two Yarrow boilers, 250 psi saturated; single Falk main reduction gear; two propellers, 27,000 shp - versus the four-boiler Wickes destroyer plant (24,200 shp, geared turbines, two screws, 35 kt) listed on the DD-82 class page, confirming removal of the forward boiler rooms in conversion.

- Finding
- Era inference: peer-reviewed reviews of U.S. Navy asbestos practice document shipboard asbestos thermal insulation in use from the 1880s through the 1950s - spanning this hull's 1917-18 construction and her 1940 APD conversion - with the Navy approving and then requiring asbestos in insulation applications beginning in the mid-1930s. A flush-deck destroyer built 1917-18 with a saturated-steam plant (four boilers as built; two Yarrow 250-psi boilers, Curtis geared turbines, and associated steam piping as APD-3) would have carried period-standard asbestos-containing boiler and steam-line insulation, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing. Builder Fore River (Bethlehem, Quincy) is documented in the Atlas yard dataset as a tier-3 yard with asbestos products across boilers, pipes, turbines, fireproofing materials, gaskets, packing, and electrical components.

- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The cited reviews are state-of-the-science/expert-side literature covering 1900-1970 era practice and do not name this hull; the Fore River yard's flagship asbestos findings in the dataset are 1960s-era litigation, decades after this hull's construction. No insulation specification, survey, or material test for this hull was located; nothing quantifies material or establishes any individual's exposure.

- Finding
- Wreck status for this hull: sunk off Lunga Point, Guadalcanal, night of 4-5 September 1942; in July 1992, nearly fifty years after her loss, a sunken U.S. Navy high-speed transport was discovered and briefly examined on the seafloor some miles off Lunga Point - its specific identity could not be determined and it is either Gregory or her sister Little (APD-4). The wreck remains a U.S. Navy sunken military craft and war grave in Iron Bottom Sound.

- Finding
- CourtListener litigation sweep for this hull: exact-name 'USS Gregory' returns zero in both the opinion and docket (RECAP) indexes - no case naming the ship exists in the index. Hull-designator queries return only identifier collisions: 'DD-82' (6 opinions - New York family-court In re matters and the Ohio redistricting case Quilter v. Voinovich, where the string is a district/docket designator), 'APD-3' (6 opinions - labor, contract, and criminal matters), 'DD-802' (0), 'Gregory' + 'DD-802' in dockets (1 hit - Lyondell Chemical bankruptcy, S.D.N.Y. 2009, an exhibit/schedule code collision). The unbounded 'Gregory' + asbestos sweeps return ~1,583 opinion and ~8,200 docket hits matching 'Gregory' as a person name (judges, plaintiffs such as 'Gregory Burdess v. Cottrell', counsel) inside generic asbestos litigation - surname collisions, non-qualifying; none reference the ship. No qualifying asbestos litigation names DD-82/APD-3; the plausible collision source is the second USS Gregory (DD-802, Fletcher class, in commission 1944-1964), and even it produced no hull-specific asbestos hit in these sweeps.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull survey exists or is feasible (wartime loss; wreck in Iron Bottom Sound never surveyed for materials), no abatement or hazmat disclosure exists, and no qualifying asbestos case names DD-82/APD-3. The hull was lost in action in September 1942 - decades before the asbestos-litigation era - and was never scrapped, converted postwar, or preserved, so the usual exposure-record pathways (yard abatement records, museum hazmat disclosures, veteran litigation) do not exist for it.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1918-built steam destroyer sunk with her 1942 fit intact retains whatever era materials were installed, undisturbed in the wreck. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
