DANFS record for this hull: namesake Lt. (j.g.) Kenneth Frederick Greiner, USNR (b. Hibbing, Minn., 27 April 1910; killed in enemy action at NAS Dutch Harbor 4 June 1942 during the Japanese attack on the Aleutians). Originally intended for Great Britain under Lend-Lease; launched as BDE-37 20 May 1943 by Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Wash.; commissioned 18 August 1943, Lt. Comdr. F. S. Dowd in command. Shakedown California-Washington coast; Pearl Harbor 31 October 1943; sailed 23 December for Tarawa as flagship of Escort Squadron 28; ~1 year Gilberts-Marshalls escort duty; rescued 13 men from a downed PBM 26 January 1944; shelled Kusaie Island 1 June 1944; repairs Pearl Harbor July-October 1944; December patrols around Wotje, Mili, Jaluit, Maloelap; plane-guarding/screening escort carriers Gilberts-Marshalls; Okinawa 29 June-3 July 1945; returned via Kerama Retto, Ulithi, Eniwetok, Pearl Harbor, arriving San Francisco 28 July 1945; decommissioned Oakland 19 November 1945; stricken from the Navy List 5 December 1945; 'sold to J. G. Berkwit & Co. 10 February 1945, and resold in 1947' (the printed 1945 sale year is impossible - the ship was in commission until November 1945; carried in gaps). Three battle stars for World War II service. Specification block: 1,140 t; 289'5" x 35'1" x 8'3"; 21 k.; complement 156.

Puget Sound Navy Yard construction trades 1942-43; wartime crew (DANFS complement 156)
    Limitations
DANFS documents namesake, builder, dates, and service narrative - it contains no materials or asbestos information. Live NHHC page returned 404 on 2026-09-28; the Wayback capture of the NHHC page is cited with a verbatim hazegray transcription as corroboration. The '10 February 1945' sale year is a DANFS error (hull in commission until November 1945) - NavSource reads 10 February 1946; carried in gaps rather than silently corrected.

    Finding
Official BuShips register row 139 (register p.246-247) names this hull: 'GREINER ... DE37', design group GMT; built by Navy Yard, Puget Sound; contract price $1,649,400; contract signed 1 November 1941 (ditto of preceding Navy-yard DE rows); keel laid 7 September 1942 ('do' ditto); launched 20 May 1943; date of first commission 18 August 1943. The GMT design-group table row (pp.234-235) fixes the type plant: 289 ft 5 in oa, 1,140 t standard (1,430 t full load), ~21.5 kt trial, accommodations 15 officers / 183 enlisted, 2 propellers, 4 G.M. diesel engines model 16-278A at 6,000 hp, boiler columns 'None' - a diesel-electric tandem-motor drive with no steam plant; armament 3 x 3-inch/50 D.P., 1 quad AA mount.

Puget Sound Navy Yard construction trades 1942-43; wartime crew (design accommodations 15 officers / 183 enlisted)
    Limitations
Contemporaneous official register (scan read by OCR; register entries transcribed from the page image and consistent with DANFS on every overlapping field). Documents contract/dates/design plant - no materials or asbestos information. The register predates the war's end and records no disposition. Contract price/date are ditto-carried from the preceding Navy-yard DE rows; independent confirmation of the 1 November 1941 contract date for this hull not separately located.

    Limitations
Volunteer-compiled secondary source - not primary documentation. All overlapping dates agree with DANFS and the BuShips register; it supplies the sponsor, the decommissioning CO, and the scrapping chain (1946 sale, National Metal & Steel, Terminal Island) that DANFS lacks or misprints. Buyer spelled 'Berkit' here vs 'Berkwit' in DANFS - same firm, spelling conflict carried in gaps.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/yard inference: a GMT-type destroyer escort built 1942-43 would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to a diesel-electric ship - exhaust insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, brake linings, fireproofing, and deck coverings - but no boilers or steam-line lagging (the BuShips design table records 'None' in the GMT boiler columns). Builder Puget Sound Navy Yard is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 1): pulmonary abnormalities in 21% of pipe coverers/insulators and 40-150 f/cc during rip-out (DTIC AD0715808, 1970); amosite/chrysotile exposure during overhaul rip-out and installation with preformed magnesia block ~15% asbestos (PMID 1065583, 1962-1972 study period); EPA Superfund-listed site WA2170023418.

Puget Sound Navy Yard construction trades 1942-43; wartime crew 1943-45
    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The diesel-electric plant means the largest asbestos categories of steam ships (boiler and steam-line insulation) do not apply. The cited PSNY studies postdate this hull's 1942-43 construction by two to three decades and document overhaul-era exposures, not construction; no wartime PSNY materials documentation for this hull was located. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

    Finding
GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program posture: standing policy from 1975 removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas. Context for this hull's timeline: DE-37 decommissioned November 1945, stricken December 1945, and sold for scrapping in 1946-47 - the hull left Navy custody roughly three decades before the GAO-described program-era reviews and before any Navy asbestos survey regime existed.

Navy shipyard workers (program review population, not this hull)
    Limitations
Program-level documentation, not ship- or class-specific; fieldwork yards were elsewhere (Long Beach, Norfolk). DE-37 was scrapped before the period GAO surveyed, so this row frames why no modern Navy survey or abatement record for the hull should be expected - it is not evidence about this hull's materials.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no hull ACM survey, no abatement contract or disposal hazmat disclosure, and no docketed asbestos litigation naming USS Greiner or DE-37 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The only asbestos-bearing pages naming the hull are law-firm marketing pages (asbestos-ships.com dedicated page; shepardlawfirm.com, freeasbestostesting.com, and mesotheliomaveterans.org list entries), which are excluded sources under batch rules and assert no documentable ship-specific fact - the asbestos-ships.com page additionally misprints the stricken date as 19 December 1945 and the sale year as 1947.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull's 1942-43 construction is consistent with era materials, and no scrapping-environmental record exists from 1946-47. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
CourtListener sweeps located no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull: opinion search '"USS Greiner"' returned 0 results; RECAP docket search '"USS Greiner"' returned 0 results; opinion search '"DE-37"' returned 262 loosely-matched results (first 20 reviewed - every hit is a docket-entry-number collision ('[DE 37]') in unrelated civil litigation; no vessel or asbestos reference). A RECAP docket query for the hull number and a surname-plus-asbestos docket query were attempted repeatedly but blocked by the saturated fleet-wide pacing budget through most of the session. No complaint, opinion, or docket naming the hull was located.
