- Documented for this hull: the second Grenadier laid down by Boston Naval Shipyard 8 February 1944; launched [Vol. IV errata: launching 15 December 1944 but was not christened until] 10 February 1951, sponsored by Mrs. John A. Fitzgerald (wife of the first Grenadier's last skipper); commissioned the same day, Comdr. Henry G. Reaves. One of the first 'Guppy' submarines, equipped with a snorkel - proved the device on a 7-day submerged shakedown voyage Guantanamo Bay to New London. First yard overhaul at Philadelphia Naval Shipyard 16 December 1952-22 April 1953. Midshipman cruise to Rio de Janeiro June 1953; Montreal via the St. Lawrence August 1955. Mediterranean deployments January 1956, 8 Nov 1957-27 Jan 1958, and 10 Apr-8 Aug 1962. On 29 May 1959, in company with a patrol plane, sighted and photographed a Soviet submarine off Iceland - 'the first confirmed sighting of a Soviet submarine in the Atlantic' (DANFS). Transferred to Key West 15 September 1959; Cuban missile-crisis quarantine October 1962 in company with Balao, Threadfin, Trutta, and Chopper; one of several ships dispatched to Cuba in November 1962. SubRon 12; sonar/ASW equipment development work. (Print-era entry ends ~1967.)

- Limitations
- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Yard-period asbestos disturbance is era inference, not a per-hull record. Live NHHC DANFS page returned 404 on 2026-09-18; verbatim losthistory.net/hazegray transcription used. Print-era DANFS entry predates disposal - decommission/strike/transfer rest on NavSource (ev-02).

- Secondary compilation (NavSource, Bauer & Roberts Register-derived data); used for disposition/register details the print-era DANFS entry omits. Not an official record itself. NavSource's 'Guppy type' completion label is consistent with DANFS's 'one of the first Guppy submarines' framing.

[3]Era inference built on: DANFS spec block (diesel-electric drive); BuShips Ships' Data 1945 Vol. 1 submarine machinery tables (DERD drive, no boilers); shipyard-exposure-map documented asbestos product lists for Boston Naval Shipyard and Philadelphia Naval Shipyard (thermal insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, block insulation) [other_primary]

- Finding
- A Tench-class diesel-electric fleet boat laid down at Boston Naval Shipyard 1944, suspended 1946, and completed as a Guppy-type snorkel boat 1951 sits inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era; era-standard applications on diesel-electric boats (no boilers/steam plant) included diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, and galley/refrigeration equipment insulation. The post-suspension completion to a modified Guppy design and the Philadelphia NSY overhaul (Dec 1952-Apr 1953) were interior work periods of the type that disturbed era insulation.

- Finding
- Fleet-boat design-family context: the Second Amended Complaint in Robbins v. Air & Liquid Systems Corp. (M.D. Fla. 8:23-cv-01723, 2023) alleges a Navy engineman aboard USS Clamagore (SS-343) in 1960-63 was exposed while removing/replacing asbestos-containing products (gasket, refractory, castable, pipe-covering, insulating-cement, packing, spray materials per the complaint's general recital). Clamagore is a Balao-class sister design; the Tench class is a near-copy Balao derivative per the NPS Torsk NHL nomination.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos case naming USS Grenadier (SS-525) was found in the sources searched. CourtListener API 'SS-525' (type=o) returned 5 hits - all name collisions (New Mexico bankruptcy SSN-fragment matches: Barth v. Samora, In re Selman, Finch v. Schrock, Bennett v. Aviation; Fiorani v. Caci) - none vessel-related, none asbestos. 'USS Grenadier' (type=o) and RECAP docket searches (type=r) were blocked by the API's 125/day throttle; engine-indexed site:courtlistener.com fallback returned only surname collisions (pro se litigant Janice Wolk Grenadier across several E.D. Va./S.D. Fla. dockets; a 'Grenadier report' expert report in an S.D.N.Y. securities matter) - no qualifying asbestos litigation located via the index.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. Venezuelan-period material condition undocumented in English-language sources; Verolme disposal-site hazmat handling not documented. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. Litigation coverage is partial: the CourtListener API throttled mid-sweep (daily quota), so name and RECAP-docket coverage rests on a secondary search index only and unindexed dockets or unindexed-RECAP filings may exist.
