DANFS record for this hull: launched (per DANFS) 28 April 1943 at the Boston Navy Yard, sponsored by Mrs. Don T. Griswold and commissioned the same day, Lt. Comdr. Charles M. Lyons in command - but NPS and NavSource give launched 9 January 1943 / commissioned 28 April 1943 (see gaps and ev-02). Shakedown Bermuda; reached Bora Bora via Norfolk and the Panama Canal 23 July 1943; South Pacific convoy escort. 12 September: four-hour attack on a Japanese submarine off Guadalcanal, not credited. Night of 23-24 December 1943 off Lunga Point: five-hour sonar hunt, eight attacks, final twelve-depth-charge pattern; credited with sinking I-39. Overhaul at Mare Island, then returned to the Pacific theater 3 June 1944 for convoys and training out of Pearl Harbor. 12 March-6 May 1945: Eniwetok as flagship for Commander, Task Group 96.3 (Comdr. T. F. Fowler). Okinawa from 27 May 1945, ASW screen; two kamikaze kills 31 May and 5 June - the second exploded close aboard, showering fragments. Departed Okinawa 29 June escorting a convoy to Leyte Gulf, then Ulithi screening. Tokyo Bay 10 September; departed 16 September; arrived San Pedro 8 October. Decommissioned 19 November 1945; struck from the Navy List 5 December 1945; sold to Dulien Steel Products, Seattle, for scrapping 27 November 1946. Three battle stars for WWII. Specs block: 1,140 tons; 289'5"; 35'; 11'10"; 21 kt; complement 156; 3x3", 4 1.1", 9 20mm, 2 dct, 8 dcp, 1 hh; class Evarts. Namesake Ens. Don T. Griswold Jr., VS-8 off Hornet (CV-8), hit a Japanese cruiser at Midway 6 June 1942 and was lost; posthumous Distinguished Flying Cross.

    Limitations
DANFS documents service history, namesake, and specifications - not materials or asbestos content. DANFS omits the laid-down date and conflates launch with commissioning ('launched 28 April 1943 ... commissioned the same day'); NPS Charlestown yard table (ev-02) and NavSource give launched 9 January 1943 - 9 January is carried. Transcription reads namesake's birthplace 'Brya, Tex.' (OCR/typo for Bryan). Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404 and no Wayback capture exists.

    Finding
Official NPS Boston NHP publication, ships-built table: 'Griswold / Escort Vessel / DE-7 / Keel Laid 1942 Nov 27 / Launched 1943 Jan 9 / Commissioned 1943 Apr 28 / Ex-BDE 7 (1943); sold 1946.' Establishes the official laid-down and launch dates (correcting DANFS's conflated 'launched 28 April 1943, commissioned the same day'), confirms the builder yard, and records that this hull was laid down as BDE-7 for Britain under Lend-Lease and retained - provenance DANFS omits. Appendix cross-reference: 'No Name (BDE-7), see Griswold.'

    Limitations
Yard-history table confirms builder, dates, and Lend-Lease (BDE-7) provenance; it carries no materials or asbestos information. 'Sold 1946' is consistent with DANFS (27 November 1946, Dulien Steel Products). The original nps.gov URL redirects to a generic page; the identical PDF is served via the GPO PURL cited.

    Finding
Era/yard inference: an Evarts-class destroyer escort completed 1943 in a U.S. Navy yard would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to a diesel-electric ship - exhaust insulation, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, brake linings, and deck/bulkhead coverings - but no boilers or steam-line lagging, the largest asbestos categories of steam ships; builder Boston Naval Shipyard is documented as a tier-3 asbestos-era yard in the Atlas dataset (yard-level John Crane gasket/sealing litigation record), and the 1944 Mare Island overhaul adds a second documented yard touchpoint.

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No primary source names asbestos materials aboard this hull; the diesel-electric (GMT/'short hull') plant detail rests on standard secondary references and is unverified against an official source (see gaps). Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-7: no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, disposal hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Griswold (DE-7) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was sold for scrapping 27 November 1946 - decades before the Navy's asbestos-control programs and before modern hazmat documentation existed - so this negative finding is expected rather than probative.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943 Navy-yard build is era-consistent with asbestos use, but no primary source names materials on this hull. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
Archival leads for hull-level records not yet retrieved: DE-7's wartime deck logs should sit in NARA RG 24; per-hull material and machinery specifications may exist in RG 19 General Information Books or BuShips plan files; the 1945 Ships' Data (NAVSHIPS 250-010) escort-vessel section would carry the official machinery listing for this hull (the available scan is image-only and was not OCR'd); NARA Bureau of Ships still pictures (BS series) hold further 1944 Mare Island views of this hull.

Leads only - holdings not retrieved or confirmed for this hull; existence of the record series is documented, presence of DE-7-specific content within them is not. NARA catalog API returned the HTML catalog shell (key-gated) during this session.
