- DANFS record for this hull: laid down 28 November 1943 by Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp., Morris Heights, N.Y.; launched 30 January 1944, sponsored by Mrs. J. G. Feeney; commissioned at the New York Navy Yard 5 June 1944, Lt. James O. Watts in command. Escorted eight convoys between New York and Guantanamo Bay for the Eastern Sea Frontier (Aug 1944-Jan 1945); coastal anti-submarine patrols Jan-Feb 1945; five more East Coast escort runs March-May 1945. Deployed to the Pacific from 12 June 1945, reaching Ulithi 8 August; air-sea rescue duty between Ulithi and Guam, then Marianas patrols based at Guam from 21 October; 32 months in the Western Pacific with patrols and passenger runs to Okinawa, Korea, Japan, the Bonins, and the Carolines. Midway air-sea rescue July-September 1948, then Pearl Harbor overhaul; Tutuila (American Samoa) air-sea rescue from 9 January 1949; Patrol Group, Hawaiian Sea Frontier, operating out of Midway, Johnston Island, and Kwajalein for almost five years. Served at Bikini 29 January-5 May 1954 during hydrogen-bomb testing (Operation Castle). Decommissioned 12 August 1955 at Astoria, Oregon, and entered the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group; named Grosse Pointe 15 February 1956 while berthed in reserve; loaned to the Republic of Korea under the Military Assistance Program 21 November 1960, serving the Korean Navy as Kun Chong San (PC-708). Spec block: dp. 280; l. 173'8"; b. 23'; dr. 10'10"; s. 22 k.; cpl. 65; 1 3", 1 40mm., 5 20mm., 2 rkt., 4 dcp., 2 dct.; cl. PC-553.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. DANFS was written while the ship was still in Korean service ('she serves the Korean Navy as Kun Chong San'), so no disposal or striking date is recorded; class designation in the DANFS spec block ('cl. PC-553') conflicts with NavSource's 'PC-533 Class' header - carried in gaps.

- Finding
- Ship-specific government dose-reconstruction record for this hull's Operation Castle participation: PC-1546 served in Task Unit 7.3.1 (Surface Security Unit) at Bikini Atoll. On Shot BRAVO (1 March 1954) the ship was alerted by other vessels to fallout over her intended route, turned north, and escaped the early fallout; topside intensity nonetheless reached approximately 90 mR/hr. The commanding officer (Capt. Bruce Garlinghouse, USN (Ret), interviewed by SAIC 22 August 1989) reported that, lacking a washdown system and pumping capacity, he ordered the entire crew below decks and conned the ship alone from the flying bridge in rain gear, maneuvering under rain clouds for washdown; his film badge read 1600 mrem. Four individually badged radsafe monitors who conducted topside surveys recorded 720-1175 mrem. The report's calculated cumulative film-badge dose for a typical crew member reached 986 mrem through July 1954 (Table 4.7), with only four valid cohort badges for the ship's 62 personnel - an inference limitation the report itself flags. PC-1546 conducted ASW patrols off Bikini through early May and departed for Kwajalein 6 May 1954.

- 1954 (exposure window); ~1989-1990 (report)
- Population
- USS PC-1546 crew, ~62 personnel, Operation Castle (January-May 1954)
- Limitations
- Documents ionizing-radiation exposure reconstruction for this crew - NOT asbestos. It establishes the hull's Operation Castle participation and crew size (62), and is a primary health-relevant exposure record for this population, but it says nothing about shipboard materials. It is a draft technical report; individual badge readings (CO 1600 mrem; monitors 720-1175 mrem) are reconstructed/analyzed values, and the report itself cautions that four cohort badges for 62 personnel weakens statistical inference.

- Finding
- Contemporaneous task-force history names this hull: USS PC-1546 arrived at Eniwetok in late January 1954, having sailed from Pearl Harbor on 5 January but delayed at Johnston Island by an engineering breakdown; her arrival released temporary replacement USS PC-1172, which departed Eniwetok 27 January for Kwajalein. As a unit of Task Unit 7.3.1 (Surface Security Unit), PC-1546 was based at Bikini when performing normal patrol operations.

[6]NavSource specifications block for PC-1546 (two GM 16-278A diesels, twin screw) + DANFS spec block (cl. PC-553) - era application pattern for diesel patrol craft [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource 12/011546.htm specifications block; DANFS spec block
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era inference for this diesel-electric patrol craft: PC-1546 was built 1943-44 at the height of the Navy's asbestos-use era and had no steam plant, so the boiler/turbine-lagging pathway does not apply. Era-standard asbestos-relevant applications for the type were exhaust and muffler lagging, machinery and piping insulation, gaskets, valve and flange packing, electrical insulation, fireproofing, and deck coverings. The Navy did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s (see GAO row), spanning this hull's entire U.S. service era.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Two secondary-source conflicts documented rather than silently reconciled. (1) Class designation: DANFS spec block reads 'cl. PC-553'; NavSource and NavalCoverMuseum headers read 'PC-533 Class Submarine Chaser'; uboat.net and Wikipedia carry the umbrella 'PC-461 class'. This record carries 'PC-461 class' as the umbrella class and logs the sub-designation conflict in gaps. (2) Korean-service name: DANFS and NavalCoverMuseum read 'Kun Chong San'; NavSource reads 'Kun Chang Sun' - both romanizations of the same ROKN hull (PC-708); the conflict is logged in gaps and both forms are carried in aliases.
