- Finding
- Documented for this hull: first USS Guardfish, launched by Electric Boat Co., Groton, 20 January 1942 (sponsor Mrs. Edward J. Marquart); commissioned at New London 8 May 1942, Lt. Comdr. T. B. Klakring. Twelve war patrols - northeast Honshu, Solomons/Bismarck, Bougainville reconnaissance landings days before the American landings, the Formosa 'Mickey Finns' wolf-pack patrols (sinking Matai Maru, Hizan Maru, Jinsan Maru, Teirgu Maru in July 1944), and the destroyers Hakaze and Umikaze. On 24 January 1945, in darkness off Guam, she mistook the U.S. salvage ship Extractor (ARS-15) for a Japanese submarine and torpedoed her; Guardfish rescued all but 6 of Extractor's 79 crew. After training command duty she decommissioned at New London 25 May 1946; placed in service as a Naval Reserve Training Ship 18 June 1948; struck in June 1960; expended as a torpedo target sunk by Dogfish and Blenny off New London 10 October 1961. Eleven battle stars and two Presidential Unit Citations.

[3]USS Guardfish (SSN-612) veterans' site history page documenting the nuclear namesake's construction and service era [other_primary]
- Locator
- guardfish.org SSN-612 history page
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NAME-NAME note for downstream litigation sweeps: 'USS Guardfish' also names SSN-612, a Thresher-class nuclear attack submarine built at New York Shipbuilding (commissioned 1966, decommissioned 1992, recycled 1992). Asbestos-era litigation naming 'USS Guardfish' is more likely to concern SSN-612; any hit must be resolved before attribution to SS-217.

- Locator
- class-f/gato-class.class.json row ev-gato-class-07; NavSource SS-217 spec block
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/design inference for a diesel-electric fleet submarine of the Gato class: the boats have no boilers or steam plant - era-consistent asbestos-relevant applications are diesel-exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, galley and refrigeration insulation, and electrical/battery materials. All construction and documented Navy-yard periods on this hull fall inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era. This hull was built 1941-42, repaired at San Francisco in early 1944, and held in reserve-training use through 1960 - all events predate the Navy's substitution era.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text blocked, HTTP 403)
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - meaning every construction, overhaul, and repair event on this hull (built 1941-42) predates the substitution era.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-guardfish-ss217-01 through -06
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for SS-217: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming THIS hull was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener API search was rate-limit throttled on 2026-09-18 (HTTP 429; site search interface and feeds also blocked); site-scoped web searches of courtlistener.com for 'USS Guardfish'/'SS-217' returned no qualifying asbestos case for this hull.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard or of filings - state-court and non-digitized records are not covered and the CourtListener API sweep could not be completed under rate limiting. 'USS Guardfish' hits require SS-217/SSN-612 resolution before attribution. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
