- Finding
- Documented for this hull: launched by Portsmouth Naval Shipyard 11 June 1952 (sponsor Mrs. Robert A. Bonin, widow of the first Gudgeon's last CO); commissioned 21 November 1952, Comdr. Robert M. Carroll; joined SubRon 1/SubDiv 1 at Pearl Harbor 18 July 1953. Mare Island Naval Shipyard overhaul occupied the remainder of 1954. First U.S. Navy submarine to circumnavigate the globe: departed Pearl Harbor 8 July 1957 as Pacific Fleet Submarine Force flagship, westward from Yokosuka 26 August, returned 21 February 1958 after ~8 months and 25,000 miles; the navysite narrative documents a ~30-hour evasion of Soviet destroyers with depth-charge attacks off Vladivostok in August 1957. Three further WestPac cruises 1959/1961/1963. Mare Island modernization: arrived San Francisco 9 December 1965 - the ship was cut in half and an 18-foot section inserted, new and larger engines plus improved equipment installed; completed April 1967. Vietnam qualifying service 1968 and 1969 (campaign records). Another Mare Island overhaul early 1973 - Dry Dock No. 4 with sister Trout 22 February - 3 October; overhaul completed 21 December 1973.

- Limitations
- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS does not record a laid-down date for this hull (secondary compilations give 20 May 1950 - carried as corroborated). Live NHHC page returned 404 on 2026-09-18; 2021 Wayback capture of the official page used for the DANFS text; navysite's expanded narrative supplies the circumnavigation detail and Soviet encounter.

- Finding
- Post-1973 narrative (secondary compilation): Long Beach Naval Shipyard December 1975 - March 1976 - NAVSEA Ship Silencing Division ~$2.5M exterior rubber (anechoic) coating installation, worked by Mare Island and Long Beach personnel under temporary environmental shelters; acoustic research and test duties through the late 1970s; reclassified auxiliary research submarine AGSS-567 on 1 April 1978; redesignated guided-missile auxiliary submarine SSAG-567 on 5 November 1979 with combat capability restored; San Diego homeport through 1983 (McKee AS-41 support; Portland Rose Festival June 1982; exercise Kernel Usher 82-2). Decommissioned 30 September 1983 at Naval Submarine Base Point Loma and transferred to Turkey on a five-year lease, commissioned TCG Hizirreis (S 342); struck from the NVR 6 August 1987; permanent transfer 17 August 1987.

- Limitations
- Secondary compilation (navysite) - used for post-1973 events the official DANFS does not carry; the Turkish transfer chain is corroborated by the Kocaeli governorship source (ev-03) and the stricken date by consistent secondary consensus. The navysite spec block shows a decommission date of 9 September 1983 conflicting with its own narrative's 30 September 1983 - the narrative/Turkish-source date is used; conflict in gaps. Not an authoritative citation; nothing asbestos-related asserted from it.

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Published California appellate opinion court-documents the submarine asbestos-insulation spec regime at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in the early 1970s: Navy specifications MIL-I-2781/MIL-I-24244 could only be met with asbestos-containing product (Unibestos, sole Navy-approved item), shipped to Mare Island and packed around submarine piping by yard workers. Gudgeon's documented Mare Island overhaul (Dry Dock No. 4, February-December 1973) falls inside this documented regime and location.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-electric submarine built 1950-52 and repeatedly overhauled and modernized at Navy yards through 1976 sits inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era. For a diesel boat (no steam plant), era-standard asbestos applications comprise machinery and engine-exhaust insulation/lagging, gaskets and packing on auxiliary piping, electrical insulation, and interior hull insulation - applied most intensively during yard availabilities. All documented yards' asbestos product use in this period is independently documented at the yard level.

Names era-standard applications on a diesel-electric submarine, not confirmed installed materials; no boiler-room framing applies (no steam plant). The 1975-76 rubber coating project is an acoustic treatment, not an ACM record. No quantity. Current material condition of the preserved Turkish museum hull undocumented.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - covering essentially all of Gudgeon's U.S. service-era yard events (1952 build; Mare Island periods 1954, 1965-67, 1973; Long Beach 1975-76).

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos case naming USS Gudgeon (SS-567) was found. CourtListener direct search (API v4, web UI, and Atom feeds) was blocked this session - API returned HTTP 429 'Rate limit exceeded: 125/day' and CloudFront returned 403/202 on web/feed endpoints; substitute discovery (web searches for 'USS Gudgeon', 'SS-567', asbestos/lawsuit/court terms) surfaced only mesothelioma-marketing listicles, which are excluded per source rules. The Turkish museum record contains no material characterization.

The preserved hull's interior material condition is not publicly characterized. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
