Boston Naval Shipyard construction trades 1941-42; wartime crew (DANFS cpl. 329)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The mirror transcription dates the launch to 27 September 1941 - the date every other source gives as keel laying; launch was 20 February 1942 (documented in gaps). Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

Disposal record for this hull: transferred on initial five-year loan at Bremerton, Washington, 5 June 1959; commissioned into the Brazilian Navy as Pará (D-27), arriving Rio de Janeiro 22 December 1959. On 1 August 1973 she was stricken from the U.S. Navy list and acquired outright by Brazil (NGB). Brazilian service included UNITAS exercises and a 13 February 1976 collision with Mato Grosso (D-34); stricken by Brazil 21 August 1978. Used as a practice target 1982-83 - including the first Brazilian Exocet MM-38 firing by a Niterói-class frigate - then sunk by two torpedoes from submarine Ceará (S-14) ~80 miles south of the Cabo Frio lighthouse. NavSource dates the sinking 23 February 1983, 19:28 local, position 24 deg 23'16" S / 42 deg 24'27" W; NGB dates it 22 February 1983 - conflict carried in gaps.

    Limitations
Secondary references (NavSource volunteer archive; NGB, a Brazilian naval-history reference compiled from Jane's/Friedman/Brazilian sources) - neither is a US government record, but both are consistent with DANFS on the transfer. Neither addresses materials aboard; the sinking means no present-day in-place material question exists.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/yard inference: a WWII Fletcher-class destroyer with a four-boiler 60,000-shp steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing; builder Boston Naval Shipyard (Charlestown) is documented at yard level in the Atlas dataset (tier 3), including litigation identification of John Crane gasket/sealing-material exposure at the yard. NavSource's as-built block lists Allis-Chalmers turbines for this hull while the Brazilian NGB record lists G.E. - the maker conflict is carried in gaps; the four-B&W-boiler/60,000-shp plant is consistent across sources.

    Limitations
Class/era and builder-yard inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. The yard record documents shipyard-side exposure conditions, not materials installed aboard DD-472. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - placing this hull's 1941-42 construction and her entire U.S. service period (1942-46) inside the documented asbestos-use era.

    Finding
Ship-specific archival holdings located: NPS Boston National Historical Park (Charlestown Navy Yard) holds Boston Navy Yard photographs of this hull dated 5 February 1943 (bow, broadside, and stern views in Boston Harbor) under catalog BOSTS-11292, within a ~40,000-image collection covering ships built or serviced by the yard. Builder-period photographic and shipyard records for this hull exist in NPS custody.

Opinion, service-records recital (Tex. Crim. App. No. 31338)
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Published appellate opinion naming this hull - NOT asbestos litigation. In a murder appeal, the court recites that the appellant's excluded Navy service records 'show that on July 15, 1943, he boarded U.S.S. Guest and while attached to the U.S.S. Guest operating in the Pacific War Theatre participated in five named campaigns.' A court-documented service recital confirming a crew member aboard DD-472 in the Pacific from 15 July 1943; the vessel reference is incidental to a criminal-evidence ruling. Caught only by the punctuated variant query 'U.S.S. Guest' - the 'USS Guest' opinion query returns 0.

Thomas Vernon Carpenter (appellant; crew member aboard DD-472 from 1943-07-15 per excluded service records)
    Limitations
Non-asbestos criminal appeal (DWI-resulting-in-death indictment, murder conviction affirmed). The ship reference is a recited service-records fact, not an adjudicated finding about the vessel; it establishes crew presence aboard this hull in 1943 but nothing about materials, conditions, or exposure.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-472: no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation names this hull in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull's 1983 sinking as a target forecloses any present-day survey/abatement pathway.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent material use is documented at class level and is a reasonable inference, not a ship-proven fact. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
