Documented for this hull: launched 26 September 1943 by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. of Manitowoc, Wis. (sponsor Mrs. Ross T. McIntire, wife of the Chief of the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery); commissioned at Manitowoc 26 January 1944, Lt. Comdr. E. D. Haskins. Towed in floating drydock from Chicago to New Orleans; five war patrols; sank Shisen Maru, frigate Awaji, frigate Kusakaki, tanker Shinei Maru, passenger-cargo Uga Maru, Nanshin Maru, and shared in sinking Kagu Maru and in finishing light cruiser Kumano; tracked Kurita's Central Force through Mindoro Strait before Leyte Gulf; four battle stars and a Navy Unit Commendation. Decommissioned at Mare Island 6 December (1945) and placed in reserve; recommissioned 6 February 1952, overhaul at San Diego; decommissioned 22 September 1953 and underwent conversion to snorkel equipment at Mare Island Shipyard; recommissioned 15 May 1954; decommissioned and loaned to Turkey 7 August 1954 as Preveze (S-22; NATO pennant S-340 from 1965 per Jane's via DANFS); deleted from the Turkish Navy in 1971.

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. Decommissioning year is elided in DANFS's '6 December' (1945 by narrative order; NavSource reads 1946 - logged). DANFS spec block reads 'Class: BALAO' - the SS-361-364 attribution boundary is unresolved across references; logged in gaps. Live NHHC page pattern returned 404 batch-wide; verbatim transcription used.

NavSource supplements: laid down 7 April 1943 at Manitowoc; decommissioned 6 December 1946 (conflicts with DANFS's 1945 by narrative order - logged) and laid up at Mare Island Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet; recommissioned 6 February 1952, overhaul at San Diego; decommissioned 22 September 1953 for GUPPY (snorkel) configuration; recommissioned 15 May 1954; decommissioned at Mare Island 7 August 1954 and transferred on loan to Turkey as TCG Preveze (D-7); renumbered S-22 in 1955 and S-340 in 1959 under the NATO pennant system (conflicts with Jane's-via-DANFS 1965 - logged); her name was cancelled 22 March 1965 to clear it for SSN-665. Sold to Turkey 1 January 1971 (header text internally inconsistent, also carrying '1 January 1972'); struck from the U.S. Naval Vessel Register and title transferred; decommissioned from Turkish Navy 4 May 1972; renamed Ceryan Botu (No. 4) and served as a charging boat at Golcuk Navy Yard until scrapped September 1983; her sail was used as a memorial at the sub base until the 17 August 1999 earthquake.

    Limitations
Volunteer-compiled archive researched with a Turkish Navy veteran; consistent with DANFS on milestones. Conflicts logged: decommissioning year (1945 DANFS vs 1946 NavSource), S-340 renumbering (1965 Jane's/DANFS vs 1959 NavSource), sale date (1 Jan 1971 vs 1 Jan 1972 within NavSource itself). Finding
Construction at Manitowoc Shipbuilding (Apr 1943-Jan 1944), Mare Island inactivation and reserve custody (1945-52), an overhaul at San Diego (1952-53, yard unnamed), and the snorkel conversion at Mare Island Shipyard (Sep 1953-May 1954) define her U.S.-custody asbestos-relevant disturbance windows; Turkish-era maintenance at Golcuk (1954-1983) is outside the U.S. yard system and undocumented here. As a diesel-electric fleet boat she carried no boilers or steam plant; era-standard asbestos applications for the type were diesel exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, acoustic/thermal hull insulation, and insulation around galley/refrigeration equipment.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey or material list located for SS-363. Names era-standard applications for diesel-electric boats and the hull's documented yard events as disturbance pathways, not confirmed installed materials; establishes no quantities and no exposure for any individual. Manitowoc and the San Diego overhaul yard are unnamed/absent from the yard dataset; Turkish-era maintenance undocumented.

    Finding
The Gato class's documented ship-level asbestos landscape: Dryfka v. Trane US recites a Navy reservist's alleged asbestos exposure aboard USS Drum (SS-228) as a reserve instructor at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard May 1966-Feb 1967; Lyautey v. Alfa Laval attaches exposure sheets listing USS Cavalla (SS-244) among Navy jobsites (1954-1974 window); and the Galveston Daily News reported in 2020 that asbestos had been found in the public areas of museum boat Cavalla (SS-244), with an approved abatement. All are pleading-stage or press-stage items for sister hulls, not this vessel. No pleading naming this vessel was located.
