Al Larson Boat Shop construction trades 1943-44; wartime and Korean-era crew (design complement 34)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Conflicts with compiled records: rename/reclassification dated 18 February 1947 here vs 17 February 1947 in NavSource; complement 34 here vs 32 in NavSource - both carried in gaps. Mirror cited because the live NHHC page returned 404.

    Finding
Official NHC capsule confirms: 270-ton auxiliary motor minesweeper built at Terminal Island, commissioned February 1944; Pacific service incl. Peleliu and Okinawa; redesignated AMS and renamed Gull February 1947; deployed to Japan autumn 1947; active Korean War minesweeping and remained in WestPac after the July 1953 armistice; conversion to coastal minehunter began mid-1954 (AMCU-46, changed to MHC-46 February 1955); returned to U.S. waters May 1955; operated off southern California until decommissioned January 1958; disposed of March 1959. NARA photo captions document the ship at Chinnampo, North Korea, November 1950 (80-G-423775, with USS Swallow AMS-36, sweep gear visible) and sweeping during a Royal Marine commando raid at Chinnampo, dated 15 June 1951 (80-G-430072).

Compiled record for this hull: laid down 3 June 1943 at Al Larson Boat Shop, Terminal Island, CA; launched 14 October 1943; commissioned USS YMS-324 28 February 1944; reclassified Motor Minesweeper AMS-16 and named Gull 17 February 1947; conversion to Coastal Minesweeper (Underwater Locator) began 1 August 1954 at the Ship Repair Facility, Yokosuka, Japan; reclassified AMCU-46 1 August 1954; conversion completed 31 January 1955; reclassified Coastal Minehunter MHC-46 7 February 1955; decommissioned 14 January 1958 at San Diego; struck from the Naval Register March 1959; 'Fate unknown.' Specifications: 270 t., 136', 24'6", 8', 15 kts., complement 32; armament one 3"/50 dual-purpose mount (later one 40mm), two 20mm, two depth-charge projectors; General Motors diesel engines, two shafts. Construction trades (Terminal Island, 1943-44); ship repair facility workforce during the 1954-55 Yokosuka conversion; crews 1944-1958
    Limitations
Compiled secondary index drawing on official records (NVR-style dates, NHC photos), not itself a primary document. Its 17 February 1947 rename date conflicts with DANFS's 18 February and its complement 32 with DANFS's 34 - carried in gaps. Contains no asbestos or materials information; the Yokosuka conversion is documented as an event, its asbestos scope unknown.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
Class documentation: the YMS-1 class (481 completed, 35 yacht yards) was wooden-hulled by design for sweeping acoustic and magnetic mines, powered by two General Motors 8-268A two-cycle diesel engines on two shafts - no boilers or steam plant. YMS-324 falls in the YMS-135 through YMS-445 single-stack subgroup. Era-typical asbestos applications for a 1943-44 diesel vessel of this size would be limited to exhaust/muffler lagging, engine and piping gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and deck coverings; no class materials list or as-built insulation specification was located for the type.

Yacht-yard construction workers (class context); diesel engine-room crews (class context)
    Limitations
Class/design documentation only - does not name this hull and establishes no asbestos aboard it. Wooden hull and diesel plant materially narrow the era-typical asbestos scope versus steam-driven steel warships, but whether any asbestos-containing products were installed aboard this hull is unverified; does not establish quantity, present-day presence, or exposure.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming this hull (as YMS-324, Gull, AMS-16, AMCU-46, or MHC-46) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion searches returned zero hits for 'USS Gull' + asbestos and zero for the hull designations qualified to the vessel; designation-string hits and docket text matches on 'Gull'/'AMS' were name collisions in unrelated litigation. The vessel was disposed of in March 1959 with undocumented fate, so no museum or post-service survey record can be expected.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1943-44 naval construction practice is consistent with some asbestos-containing components even aboard wooden diesel craft. A residue of full-text 'Gull' matches inside asbestos docket filings (275 dockets / 540 documents on the broad query) could not be individually excluded; inspected captions were unrelated. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
