- Finding
- Documented for this hull (printed DANFS vol. III): launched 30 May 1943 by Cramp Shipbuilding Co., Philadelphia (sponsor Mrs. W. L. Wright); commissioned 7 November 1944, Lt. Comdr. Frederick E. Janney; Fleet Sonar School and Panama Canal Zone training; Pearl Harbor. On her first patrol, patrolling Bungo Suido late on 6 April 1945, she made radar contact with the Yamato task group and sent a steady stream of location reports to Pearl Harbor while three times closing to within 13,000 yards - the reports guided TF 58 strikes that sank Yamato, Yahagi, and two destroyers on 7 April. Second patrol: lifeguard off Saki Shima Gunto, rescued downed carrier pilot Lt. Comdr. C. P. Smith (22 June), bombarded Shokoto Sho 7 July (73 rounds of 5-inch). Third patrol ended with the war. San Francisco 11 September; decommissioned 20 March 1946, reserve at Mare Island; reclassified AGSS-295 on 6 November 1962; struck 1 March 1967.

[3]Era inference anchored to DANFS-documented construction and yard periods for this hull; Balao-class diesel-electric machinery per NavSource specification block and BuShips Ships' Data 1945 (class profile ev-balao-class-02) [other_primary]
- Locator
- construction-era inference from DANFS dates, NavSource spec block, documented yard periods
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era inference: a diesel-electric fleet submarine built 1942-44 at Cramp Shipbuilding in the peak asbestos era would era-typically have carried asbestos-containing exhaust lagging, engine gaskets and packing, and thermal/acoustic insulation around machinery and galley/refrigeration equipment. Balao-class boats had NO boilers or steam plant - the diesel-electric plant narrows the steam-era asbestos pathway materially. Documented yard windows: Cramp Shipbuilding construction (1942-44); San Francisco inactivation and Mare Island reserve-fleet layup (1946-1967). Two decades at Mare Island reserve fleet precede her 1968 scrapping - no material or hazmat record located for either period.
