- DANFS record for this hull: named for Captain Haggard of the armed ship Louisa (Quasi-War action off Tarifa, 20 Aug 1800); launched 9 February 1943 by Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Co., Seattle, Wash., sponsored by Mrs. E. B. McKinney; commissioned 31 August 1943, Comdr. D. A. Harris. Shakedown off California; Pearl Harbor 30 Nov 1943; Marshalls (Majuro 31 Jan, Kwajalein 2 Feb, Engebi 17-19 Feb 1944); New Guinea-Solomons ops incl. Buka Passage minelaying screen 9 May and the 16-17 May depth-charge sinking of I-176 with Franks and Johnston; Guam bombardment/support 17-21 Jul 1944; Peleliu screening 15 Sep; 'Taffy 2' in the Battle off Samar 25 Oct 1944; TF 38 Luzon and South China Sea 10-20 Jan 1945; Tokyo strikes 16-17 Feb; Iwo Jima support; rammed and sank submarine identified as I-371 on the night of 22-23 Mar 1945 with bow damage, repaired at Ulithi to 21 Apr; 29 Apr 1945 kamikaze crashed close aboard and its bomb exploded in her engine room - damage control kept her afloat, wounded taken by cruiser San Diego, towed by destroyer Walker to Kerama Retto (arrived 1 May); crew repairs, departed Kerama Retto 18 Jun (but see gaps - War History narrative reads 8 Jun); Pearl Harbor 12 Jul via Saipan and Guam; Norfolk 5 Aug 1945; decommissioned 1 Nov 1945; 'scrapped because of war damage.' Spec block: Fletcher class; 2,050 t; 376'6" x 39'8" x 13'; 35 kt; complement 273. Battle stars: text reads three; editorial bracket notes the ship's War History lists twelve.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Live NHHC page 404s - verbatim HyperWar/ibiblio transcription cited per Batch-01 precedent. Internal conflicts carried in gaps: Kerama departure (18 Jun vs War History's 8 Jun), Norfolk arrival (5 vs 6 Aug), battle stars (3 vs 12 per bracketed note). The narrative's 'joined 6th Fleet at Eniwetok 21 May' (1944 Marianas buildup) is a DANFS anomaly - the Marianas force was Fifth Fleet; not relied on.

Key items: commissioning 31 Aug 1943; ten 'star' operations listed (Kwajalein/Eniwetok, Northern Solomons, I-176 'Class B' sinking, Marianas, Palaus/Ulithi, Leyte/Samar, China Sea, Tokyo/Iwo Jima, submarine sinking off Okinawa 23 Mar 1945 credited as I-371, Okinawa); two enemy aircraft shot down; two Class A/B antisubmarine actions; 2 Feb 1944 own-gun projectile/davit accident at Kwajalein (1 killed, 2 seriously wounded); 29 Apr 1945 kamikaze attack by two Zeke 52s - one struck at the waterline amidships, the other missed ahead; 13 killed, 38 wounded, 'major material damage, great difficulty in temporary repairs'; kamikaze plus 500 lb bomb. Narrative continuation: departed Kerama Retto 8 June 1945; Saipan 24 Jun; Guam (one 5-inch gun removed); Pearl Harbor ~12 Jul; cleared 13 Jul with Braine; San Diego 19-22 Jul; berthed Norfolk 6 Aug; out of commission at Norfolk 1 Nov 1945; stricken from Naval registry 16 November 1945. Awards list includes engineering personnel (Lt(jg) Quandee - engineering plant kept operating despite damage; CMM Lamb - securing machinery and shoring athwartships bulkhead; Lt. - Era/design inference for this hull: a Fletcher-class destroyer built 1942-43 at Seattle-Tacoma's Harbor Island yard with a four-boiler steam plant (4 Babcock & Wilcox boilers, 2 GE geared turbine sets, 60,000 shp per class data) would have carried period-standard asbestos applications - boiler casing and fireroom insulation, steam-line and turbine lagging, valve/flange gaskets, packing, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, fireproofing. GAO HRD-80-2 places the entire build-and-service period inside the Navy's documented peak asbestos-use era. Documented events of the type that disturb machinery-space insulation: the 29 Apr 1945 engine-room bomb detonation, crew salvage/repair work at Kerama Retto, and 1946 breakup at Norfolk Navy Yard.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, scrapping hazmat record, or merits-stage litigation naming USS Haggard (DD-555) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was scrapped in 1946 - predating museum-hull preservation - so no museum-custody documentation pathway exists.

- Finding
- The DANFS entry's bracketed note records: 'The USS Haggard still serves her country. Most of the After Engine was removed and set up in Rickover Hall, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, where it is used to instruct Midshipmen.' Sectioned engineering components from this hull survive as instructional artifacts at USNA; secondary accounts describe an original display in Isherwood Hall (boiler, main engine with reduction gear, deaerating feed tank, valves, steam-driven pumps), relocation to Rickover Hall in the 1970s, the boiler scrapped with Isherwood's 1981 demolition, and the main engine/reduction gears removed during 2000s renovations with smaller components retained on Rickover's ground floor.

- Correction to the wartime submarine identification: DANFS and the CO's War Record credit Haggard with sinking I-371 on the night of 22-23 March 1945 at 22-57N, 132-19E. Postwar reconstruction shows I-371 was declared missing by the IJN on 12 March 1945 (probably sunk by USS Lagarto SS-371 on 24 February); Haggard's victim was most likely RO-41, whose last message (22 March, 320 miles E of Okinawa, sighting an enemy destroyer) and loss position match the War Record's coordinates.

- CourtListener sweep (authenticated API v4, 2026-09-27): no published opinion names this hull - 'USS Haggard', 'U.S.S. Haggard', and 'DD-555' opinion searches (type=o) each returned zero. Docket-level sweep 'USS Haggard' (type=r) returned zero dockets. 'DD-555' (type=r) returned 19 dockets, all classified NON-QUALIFYING token collisions: the string matched OCR-noise, form codes, and document numbers in unrelated matters - Widakuswara v. - Sweep result, not a merits finding: 'no published opinion names DD-555' is supported by opinion-index coverage, but pleadings naming the hull without a published opinion would not surface at type=o. The 19 'DD-555' docket hits were classified from returned docket metadata and document snippets only - document-level text review was not performed; none of the case captions, nature-of-suit codes, or visible snippets indicate vessel or asbestos relevance.
