- Finding
- Documented for this hull: laid down 11 April 1957 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, Calif.; launched 9 January 1959 (sponsor Mrs. Chet Holifield); commissioned 4 January 1960, Lt. Comdr. Walter Dedrick in command. The first submarine designed and built from the keel up to launch guided missiles, intended for the Regulus system. On 25 March 1960 became the first nuclear-powered submarine to launch a guided missile successfully. Conducted multiple Regulus deterrent patrols; last Pacific Regulus patrol in 1964. Entered Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard for major overhaul February 1965; redesignated SSN-587 on 15 August 1965 after the Regulus program's suspension, with missile installations removed, and continued as a test platform and special-projects (deep-submergence) vessel. Decommissioned 30 June 1976 at Mare Island.

- Finding
- Disposition and characteristics (secondary compilation): first submarine designed from the keel up to launch guided missiles (Regulus I, retractable ramp, hangar for four Regulus I or two Regulus II); missile installations removed after Regulus suspension, reclassified SSN in 1965, then served 11 more years as test platform including deep-submergence and special-projects work (Operation Sand Dollar survey of Soviet submarine K-129, Project Azorian support, and Operation Ivy Bells undersea-cable work from 1971, per compiled history). Decommissioned 30 June 1976; berthed at Puget Sound; stricken 30 April 1986; recycling completed 9 September 1994. Propulsion: one S3W nuclear reactor, two propellers. Crew field: 10 officers, 88 enlisted.

Complement listed as classified in DANFS; navysite's 10+88 is carried as a variant in gaps.

[9]Era inference anchored to DANFS-documented construction and yard periods for this hull [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- construction-era inference from DANFS dates and yard periods
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era inference: a first-generation nuclear submarine built 1957-59 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in the peak asbestos era would era-typically have carried asbestos-containing insulation, gaskets, and packing around its secondary steam and auxiliary machinery; the documented Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard major overhaul (February 1965) and Mare Island special-projects yard periods are disturbance windows of the kind in which era insulation was installed and removed.

- MINSY construction trades; PHNSY overhaul trades; MINSY special-projects trades (1957-1976)
- Limitations
- CLASS/ERA INFERENCE ONLY - no ship-specific material schedule, survey, or insulation record was located for this hull. Nuclear propulsion itself establishes nothing about asbestos; the inference attaches to conventional steam-side systems. Does not establish asbestos aboard USS Halibut, any exposure, or any quantity.

[10]Negative finding: no qualifying non-litigation ship-specific asbestos record located across DANFS/NHHC, NVR, and ACM-survey/abatement/disposal sweeps [other_primary]
- Locator
- see search_ledger sl-uss-halibut-ssgn587-01..08
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No hull ACM survey, abatement contract, scrapping/recycling hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated exposure finding naming USS Halibut (SSGN-587/SSN-587) was located. CourtListener sweeps produced eight pleading/discovery-stage records naming the hull (Cooks, Halseth, Turner, Estes, Davis, McIntyre, Deliberali, Sclafani, George) - all unadjudicated - plus fishery-regulation and place-name collisions; no merits-level record or opinion names this hull.
