DANFS record for this hull: first ship named for Ensign William Ignatius Halloran, USNR (born 23 July 1915 at Cleveland, Ohio; enlisted Naval Reserve as apprentice seaman 14 August 1940; commissioned Ensign 12 June 1941; assigned Naval Air Station San Pedro, then USS Arizona; lost aboard Arizona at Pearl Harbor 7 December 1941). Spec block: dp. 1,140; l. 289'5"; b. 35'1"; dr. 8'3"; s. 21 k.; cpl. 156; a. 3 3", 4 1.1", 9 20mm., 2 dct., 8 dcp., 1 dcp. (h.h.); cl. Evarts. Laid down by Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, Calif., 21 June 1943; launched 14 January 1944, sponsored by Mrs. L. J. Halloran, mother; commissioned 27 May 1944, Lt. Comdr. J. G. Scripps in command. Shakedown; convoy escort from California 31 July, Pearl Harbor 9 August; Eniwetok 16-24 August; escort screen for fast oiler replenishment group to the Western Pacific, based Manus then Ulithi until 29 November (fuel to fleet units off Palau, Yap, Luzon); at Ulithi 20 November witnessed torpedoing of oiler Mississinewa and searched with Rall for a suspected midget submarine. 5-7 December screened two escort carriers to Manus; 14 December tanker escort to Eniwetok; Pearl Harbor 24 December. 22 January 1945 escort screen for the Iwo Jima amphibious task force; Saipan-area patrol; barrier patrol during the landings 19 February to 28 February; convoy via Saipan and Tulagi to Espiritu Santo, arriving 15 March. Departed 25 March; arrived off Okinawa 9 April; antisubmarine barrier patrols; repelled six Japanese aircraft 12 April (one splashed, two damaged); narrowly missed by torpedo 20 April; assistance to stricken Isherwood; Saipan escort; resumed barrier patrols 30 May; 21 June suicide plane splashed 75 yards away but an exploding bomb 'killed three men' and damaged hull and superstructure. Repairs at Kerama Retto; patrol off Ie Shima 5-13 July; tactical command of LST escort screen to the Philippines; Leyte Gulf 17 July; patrols at San Pedro Bay, Leyte, and Lopez Bay, Luzon; departed Philippines for the United States 10 September; San Diego 29 September; Charleston, S.C. 11 October; 'decommissioned at Charleston 2 November 1945' (April 2016 edition); struck from the Navy List 28 November 1945; sold 7 March 1947. Mare Island Navy Yard construction trades 1943-44; wartime crew (DANFS spec cpl. 156)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. Two internal/external divergences carried in gaps: the HyperWar transcription of the older edition reads decommissioned '2 November 1946' (the April 2016 edition and every other source read 1945) and the printed casualty line reads 'three men' where the ship's own war-history letter records four killed and eighteen wounded. Live NHHC page 404s in both URL formats tried; verbatim transcriptions cited (Tin Can Sailors = April 2016 edition; HyperWar = older edition). Bracketed inserts in the HyperWar mirror (midget-sub claim, casualty names) are the transcriber's annotations, not DANFS text, and are not relied on.

    Finding
Official design-group documentation for this hull's type: the legend defines 'GMT = Diesel electric tandem motor drive - short hull' and states 'All DE's fall into one of the above design groups'; the GMT characteristics row reads 289'5" overall / 283'6" waterline, ~35'2" beam, 1,140 tons standard / 1,430 full load, ~19 knots; the machinery table gives 'G. M. diesel model 16-278A', 6,000 shp, 2 propellers, and 'None' in the boilers and steam-condition columns - the official record that the GMT plant has no steam system. Destroyer History Foundation class page concurs (steam-turbine 12,000 shp plant designed out for lack of reduction gears; four 1,500-hp diesels substituted; GMTs built at Boston, Mare Island, Philadelphia, and Puget Sound navy yards).

Contemporaneous operational record - the strongest ship-specific service document for this hull, but it records operations and battle damage, not materials or asbestos content. Divergences from DANFS carried in gaps: it counts four killed (DANFS prints 'three men'), credits one plane down plus an assist on 12 April (DANFS: one splashed, two damaged of six attackers), and dates the Philippines departure to Pearl Harbor (DANFS compresses the trip to 'for the United States 10 September' via San Diego 29 September). A period typewritten letter read by OCR; minor OCR noise possible. NavSource-hosted reproduction of a RG-era serial-letter copy - provenance is the image itself; the archival original is a NARA lead.

    Finding
Era/design inference for a diesel-electric escort built at Mare Island Navy Yard in 1943-44: the GMT machinery plant - four General Motors 16-278A diesels with electric tandem-motor drive, 2 shafts, 6,000 shp - has NO propulsion boilers and no steam system (official BuShips table marks the GMT group's boiler/steam columns 'None'), so the heavy steam-ship asbestos categories (boiler insulation, steam-line lagging) do not apply. Era-standard applications for a diesel-powered escort of this vintage: diesel-exhaust insulation and lagging, machinery gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, brake linings on winches and windlass, fireproofing, deck coverings, and accommodation insulation. Builder context: Mare Island Naval Shipyard is a tier-2 asbestos-era yard in the Atlas dataset (named products incl. Unibestos, Marinite, Transite, Kaylo, Careytemp, Gold Bond, Super 66, pump/valve packing, gaskets, bonnet insulation, refractory materials - see ev-08).

Goodyear - an asbestos-caption motorcycle-products suit whose DE-305 match is a document-entry citation, not a vessel reference; Larsen v. Union Bank; In re MidSouth Golf; Janky v. Batistatos; Las Cuevas Development; Borowski; In re Checking Account Overdraft Litigation x3; Jones v. Jeld-Wen; Cockrum v. Johnson; EPIC v. Presidential Advisory Comm.; three Puerto Rico Supreme Court decisions 1911-1951; Pizzuti v. United States; U.S. v. MacDonald; Mision Industrial v. Junta de Planificacion). Supplemental '"Halloran" asbestos' (type=o): 58 hits; the 40 hits reviewed across the first two pages are all surname/law-firm collisions (parties named Halloran or O'Halloran; the Connecticut asbestos-defense firm Halloran & Sage appearing in attorney fields of asbestos cases e.g. In re General Dynamics Asbestos Cases, MacHnik v. Buffalo Pumps, Despres v. Ampco-Pittsburgh, Brown v. CBS, Norris v. Babcock & Wilcox, Krebs v. Johns-Manville); the final results page (18 hits) was pending against the fleet-wide pacing budget at drafting.

    Limitations
Sweep coverage is the CourtListener opinion + RECAP docket indexes; state-court dockets not mirrored, PACER-only filings, and settled/undocketed claims are outside it. 'No result' does not prove no claim was ever filed - it proves no indexed opinion or docket names the hull. 'Halloran' collides with a surname and with the Halloran & Sage law firm, so bare-surname hits carry no vessel signal; the final 'Halloran asbestos' page and a bare-'Halloran' docket variant were pending at drafting - see search_ledger for interim status.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DE-305: no hull ACM survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material-condition report, or docketed asbestos case names this hull. The hull was sold and scrapped in 1947 - decades before the museum-donation and hazmat-disclosure era that produced records for preserved hulls - and no Evarts-class hull survives anywhere as a museum ship, so the class also lacks a preserved-sister abatement record. The only 'asbestos' hits naming USS Halloran (DE-305) in general web search are law-firm marketing listicles that enumerate every WWII hull (mesotheliomahelp.org, elslaw.com, shepardlawfirm.com) - non-authoritative and excluded by batch rules.

    Limitations
Absence of a located record is not proof of absence aboard - 1943-44 escort construction at Mare Island falls inside the documented Navy asbestos-use era and the builder yard is a documented asbestos environment; that is era/yard inference, not a hull finding. NARA deck logs (Special List 44), RG 19 plan microfilm (NAID 175669302), the ship's 1945 serial-letter original, and any Mare Island General Information Book or construction correspondence are unsurveyed leads. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present aboard; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
