- Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. The DANFS entry was published while the ship remained in Japanese service ('She now serves...') and therefore does not cover the JMSDF disposal (1972) or final fate. DANFS's recommissioning location (Yokosuka) and spec-block class label (cl. LST-511) conflict with NavSource (Sasebo; LST-542 class) - see ev-09 correction and gaps. - Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but two conflicts exist: recommissioning location Sasebo vs DANFS Yokosuka, and commissioning CO 'Ens. Kenneth G. Adams' vs DANFS 'Lt. K. J. Adams' (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content. 'May have been designated Q101' is NavSource's hedge, not a confirmed designation. Final disposition explicitly 'fate unknown' - the 1972 JMSDF strike and subsequent fate rest on secondary sources (see gaps).

[4]NARA, 'USS LST-802 - War Diary, 11/1-30/45' (NAID 140081650), Records of the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, WWII War Diaries, National Archives at College Park (metadata via DPLA partner record) [other_primary]

- Finding
- NARA holds this hull's own November 1945 war diary - the ship's submitted operational report for the period covering the end of her post-surrender occupation duty (DANFS places her operating out of Japan/Okinawa/Philippines through this month). Metadata per the DPLA-partnered NARA record: 'USS LST-802 - War Diary, 11/1-30/45', Micro Serial Number 154006, Serial 017, dated 10 December 1945, in the CNO World War II War Diaries, Other Operational Records and Histories collection, Textual Reference, NARA College Park. An archival lead for ship-authored operational detail not present in DANFS.

- Archival lead only: the record's existence and metadata are confirmed via the DPLA-partnered catalog entry; the war-diary text itself was not retrieved this session (catalog.archives.gov record page resolves HTTP 200 but is JS-rendered; digitization status unconfirmed). A war diary reports operations, not materials - it is not expected to contain asbestos content. No exposure information.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- An LST-542-class tank landing ship built Sep-Nov 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel-powered amphibious ship of this type and period were engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, diesel exhaust lagging, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings/tile, and accommodation (bulkhead/berthing) insulation in the ship's large enclosed tank-deck and troop spaces. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or abatement record located for LST-802. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution for this hull. The diesel (no-boiler) plant narrows but does not eliminate era asbestos relevance.

- Finding type

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's construction (1944), both commissioned service periods (1944-46, 1950-60), and her entire U.S. Navy life.

- Locator
- search_ledger rows sl-uss-hamilton-county-lst802-01 through -10
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or verified litigation naming USS LST-802 / USS Hamilton County (LST-802) / JDS Hayatomo was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the API reported daily quota exhausted (~10.5 h to reset) on the first authenticated request; logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos' material is law-firm marketing content (e.g., gorilaw.com 'Asbestos on Landing Ships' listicle) asserting exposure aboard LSTs generally without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (quota-blocked, not run). Deck logs (RG 24), the November 1945 war diary, Jeffersonville B&M construction records, and any Japanese scrapping records are undigitized or unlocated leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

[8]Designation cross-check: DANFS spec block ('cl. LST-511') vs NavSource header ('LST-542 Class Tank Landing Ship') and BuShips SDB-1945 design grouping (LST-542-931 block incl. LST-802, per the lst-1-class class profile cross-check) [other_primary]
- Locator
- DANFS spec block; NavSource 10/16/160802.htm header; lst-1-class class profile (BuShips SD-1945 v2 grouping)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- CORRECTION: the DANFS spec block prints 'cl. LST-511' for this hull, but LST-802 lies inside the BuShips LST-542-931 design group and NavSource, Wikipedia, and the LST class literature all classify her as an LST-542-class tank landing ship. 'LST-511' as a class label corresponds to a different design-group anchor (LST-491-541) that does not contain hull 802; the DANFS label is inconsistent with the hull's design-group assignment and the other authoritative references. This record carries LST-542 class.

- Corrects a class-label anomaly in a primary source's spec block, not a material claim. The BuShips SDB-1945 v2 scan that anchored the design-group table (shipscribe.com) returned 404 on 2026-10-03 with no Wayback capture - the grouping is carried from the class profile's 2026-09-16 verified read plus NavSource's live class label. No asbestos content.
