Documented for this hull: Hanford is 'a city in Kings County, Calif.' PC-1142 'was laid down by the Defoe Shipbuilding Co., Bay City, Mich., 31 March 1943; launched 20 August; and commissioned 3 June 1944, Lt. (j.g.) Francis A. Mulhern in command.' After shakedown off Florida she was assigned to the Naval Training Center, Miami, for 2 months; sailed 22 September to escort a convoy to Cuba, then 10 months of escort and patrol duty between Florida and Cuba; departed Key West 22 June 1945, arriving San Diego 10 July; steamed for Hawaii, brief Pearl Harbor stay, arrived Eniwetok 24 August; patrol and escort in the Western Pacific for the rest of 1945; arrived Ponape, Caroline Islands, 7 January 1946 as station ship; served out of Ponape and Eniwetok until 24 May, when taken in tow by APL-44; arrived San Diego 30 July; sailed in late October to Astoria, Oreg., and decommissioned at Vancouver, Wash. 'While berthed with the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group, PC-1142 was named Hanford 15 February 1956. She was loaned to the Republic of China under the Military Assistance Program in July 1957, and now serves the Chinese Navy as Pei Chang (PC-122).' Defoe construction trades (1943-44); wartime crew (design complement 65)
    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. The DANFS entry predates the 1976 striking and sale - 'now serves the Chinese Navy' reflects the Vol. III (1968) vantage. No live NHHC DANFS page was located (candidate URLs 404; NHHC site search 2026-10-03 returned 22 'hanford' hits, all for the Hanford nuclear site or persons named Hanford) - verbatim transcription cited, consistent with standing Batch-01 NHHC link-rot practice. Spec block differs slightly from NavSource (see gaps).

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS; verified live 2026-10-03. Contains no asbestos content. The page's 'PC-553 Class' header is a labeling error (see ev-uss-hanford-pc1142-06). The quoted 1-Jan-1949 NVR note is NavSource's annotation of the printed register, not a separately verified document.

    Finding
The official 1953 Awards Manual eligibility table lists 'PC 1142 | 5 Sep - 19 Oct 45 | A | 20-24 Oct 45' - i.e., personnel serving aboard this hull qualified for the Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia clasp for the period 5 September - 19 October 1945, and for the China Service Medal for 20-24 October 1945. This is a service-presence record: it places the hull on qualifying duty in the western Pacific occupation area during September-October 1945, consistent with the DANFS narrative (Eniwetok arrival 24 August 1945; Western Pacific patrol/escort for the remainder of 1945).

    Finding
A veterans-association compilation of WWII patrol-craft casualties lists 'PC 1142 - Damaged During Typhoon Louise, Okinawa, 10-09-45.' If accurate, this places the hull at Okinawa during the 9 October 1945 typhoon that sank or wrecked numerous vessels (PC-584 sunk, PC-590 grounded and broken up, PC-814 destroyed, PC-1126 damaged - same table). The hull's awards-table occupation-service window (5 Sep - 19 Oct 45, ev-03) is consistent with an Okinawa presence on that date.

    Limitations
Association compilation, not a primary casualty record - damage extent and the underlying action report are unverified; DANFS does not mention the typhoon event. The corroborating awards table places the ship on qualifying western-Pacific service across the date but does not pinpoint Okinawa. No asbestos content.

CORRECTION: the NavSource page for this hull carries a 'PC-553 Class Submarine Chaser' header, but NavSource's own index files PC-1142 inside the 'PC-461 Class - Continued' series (PC-1077 to PC-1265, 189 hulls), and adjacent sister pages (PC-1141 Pierre, PC-1143) are headed 'PC-461 Class Submarine Chaser.' The correct class is PC-461: a 173-foot steel-hulled twin-diesel submarine chaser built 1941-44 (NavSource index narrative; Wikipedia PC-461-class article places hulls 1140-1149 in the GM 16-278A diesel group, matching NavSource's specs for this hull).

    Finding
A steel-hulled PC-461-class patrol craft built 1943-44 at Defoe sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel-driven patrol craft of this period were machinery and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, thermal insulation in accommodation and magazine spaces, electrical insulation, and deck coverings. As a diesel vessel she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS Hanford / PC-1142 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated API returned a daily-quota-exhausted response (~3.6 h server-directed wait); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no case or BVA decision naming this hull; the only 'asbestos' material touching the class is law-firm marketing content (mesothelioma.net patrol-boat and Defoe-shipyard pages) asserting asbestos use without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). Deck logs (NARA RG 24), Defoe work packages, and any transfer/survey documentation are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
