Derby, great-great-grandniece of Captain Jonathan Haraden; commissioned at Boston 16 September 1943, Comdr. H. C. Allen, Jr., in command. Shakedown off Bermuda; to the Pacific via Panama Canal, San Diego 21 December 1943. Marshalls: Kwajalein bombardment screen and fire support 30 January-1 February 1944 (Ennubir, Ennagannet, Roi-Namur), Ellice Islands escort 6-15 February, Kwajalein/Eniwetok ASW patrol to 29 February. Marianas: screened escort carriers Natoma Bay and Manila Bay east of Saipan 22-24 June 1944; near-miss by four aerial bombs while alongside Natoma Bay. Leyte: arrived off the landing group 20 October 1944, antiaircraft screen under near-continuous raids, to Manus 26 October-1 November; Palau-based convoy air support to 28 November. Kamikaze hit 13 December 1944 in the Sulu Sea: a fourth attacker crashed the destroyer's side, forward engine room out of commission, topside severely damaged; USS Twiggs (DD-591) came alongside; reached San Pedro Bay 14 December, transferred casualties - 14 killed, 24 wounded. Battle repairs at Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, arriving 14 January 1945. Returned to the Pacific from San Francisco 19 April 1945; Subic Bay training from 6 July; post-surrender 7th Fleet show of force off the China coast (Tsingtao, Jinsen Korea 8 September, Taku Bay occupation landings 30 September-6 October, Chefoo/Shanghai/Taku/Tsingtao). DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The spec block's armament line transcribes '5 6-inch' - an evident transcription artifact for five 5-inch guns (Fletcher standard); not relied on. Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Asbestos wrongful-death complaint names this hull by hull number as an alleged exposure site. Exhibit A for decedent ROBERT L. WHITE (diagnosed with asbestosis and asbestos-related pleural disease on or about July 2006, and lung cancer on or about March 2007; died 5 April 2007) lists in its 'Location of Exposure / Employer / Job Title / Dates' table: 'USS HARADEN (DD-585) 1944-1947,' among Navy and shipyard entries including USS Wyoming (AG-17, Boiler Tender, 1940), USS Osmond Ingram (DD-255, Boilermaker, 11/1941-2/23/1942), USS Donaldson (DE-44, Machinist Mate, 12/1943-5/1944), Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Bremerton, the Naval Repair Facility (32nd St. Annex) San Diego (Diesel Mechanic, 1950-1952), and Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Hull attribution is explicit - the pleading prints 'DD-585,' and the 1944-1947 window postdates the transfer of the first Haraden (DD-183) to Britain in September 1940.

Robert L. White, USN (alleged service aboard this hull 1944-1947); co-decedents Daniel K. Campbell and Joseph Kotarsky (separate Exhibit A tables)
    Limitations
Pleading-stage allegation only - the exposure table is an allegation, not an adjudicated finding; the complaint does not identify asbestos-containing products aboard, quantities, or specific spaces. Procedural history per the docket: stayed pending MDL transfer; transferred into MDL-875 (E.D. Pa., In re Asbestos Products Liability Litigation) via Conditional Transfer Order CTO-304 on 17 July 2008; remanded to N.D. Cal. by MDL conditional remand order 14 August 2012; referred for settlement February 2013; dismissed WITH PREJUDICE 22 November 2013 on the parties' stipulation/voluntary dismissal - a negotiated disposition, not a merits adjudication of the exposure allegation. The alleged '1944-1947' window extends past this hull's 2 July 1946 decommissioning into the reserve-fleet period - not reconciled. Verified against the filed document via OCR of the RECAP scan (no native text layer).

Era/yard inference: a Fletcher-class destroyer built at the Boston Navy Yard in 1942-43 with the class-standard four-Babcock & Wilcox-boiler, 60,000-shp geared steam-turbine plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation - boiler and steam-line lagging, turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. The builder yard is Atlas-documented at yard level: the Boston Naval Shipyard record includes a litigated allegation of exposure to John Crane gaskets and sealing materials at the yard (In re John Crane, Inc., Tex. App. 1st Dist. 2003) and WWII peak employment of 50,128.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - placing this 1942-43-built hull entirely inside the documented asbestos-use era. All construction, wartime repair, and reserve-fleet phases of this hull predate the substitution era.

Documented repair availability: DANFS records this hull arriving at Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, 14 January 1945 for battle repairs after the 13 December 1944 kamikaze hit, with repairs and training completed before departure 19 April 1945 - an approximately three-month yard availability. The repair yard is Atlas-documented at yard level: a 1970 industrial-hygiene study of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (DTIC AD0715808) recorded pulmonary abnormalities in 21% of 7,000 employees surveyed and 40-150 fibers/cc during rip-out operations, and the yard is a listed Superfund site (asbestos, mercury, PCBs, petroleum hydrocarbons).

Litigation surface for this hull, authenticated API v4 sweep 2026-09-27: exact-phrase '"USS Haraden"' returned zero published opinions (type=o) and one RECAP docket (type=r) - Beaurman-White v. General Electric Co., N.D. Cal. 3:08-cv-00230, Diversity-Asbestos, which full-text review confirms is the qualifying pleading at ev-03. Hull-number '"DD-585"' returned zero results in both indexes. Bare 'Haraden' returned 57 opinion hits - all name collisions (parties surnamed Haraden; Haraden Motorcar Corp.; none referencing a ship, the Navy, or asbestos on snippet review) - and 79 docket hits dominated by surname/company collisions including Haraden v. 3M Co. (N.D. Fla. 2021, an earplug-MDL surname case, not the ship). No merits-stage or adjudicated asbestos finding names this hull.

    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, materials inventory, hazmat disclosure, or adjudicated exposure finding located for this hull. The hull was sunk as a target in November 1973, so no museum, donation-condition, or drydock-documentation channel ever existed for it. Ship-specific asbestos documentation is limited to the pleading-stage allegation at ev-03; the asbestos picture otherwise rests on class/era inference (ev-04, ev-05) and documented yard availabilities (ev-07). BuShips material specifications for the hull (NARA RG 19) and deck logs (RG 24) remain unretrieved archival leads.

    Limitations
Absence of a located ship-specific record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-standard applications are documented at class/era level. Absence may reflect the hull's early disposal (1973 target sinking) eliminating the museum/disclosure phases that produced records for preserved Fletchers.
