DANFS record for this hull: first ship named for Ensign James Wallace Haverfield, USNR (born Urichsville, Ohio, 11 April 1917; commissioned Ensign 12 June 1941; reported to USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor 28 June 1941; one of 46 officers and 1,057 men of Arizona lost 7 December 1941). Launched 30 August 1943 by Brown Shipbuilding Co., Houston, sponsored by Mrs. Tracy Haverfield, mother of Ensign Haverfield; commissioned 29 November 1943, Lt. Comdr. Jerry A. Matthews in command. Caribbean shakedown, then Bogue hunter-killer group on Atlantic convoy lanes: departed Norfolk 26 February 1944 and, aided by a Canadian corvette and British aircraft, sank U-575 (DANFS reads 'the 23rd of March' - see correction row ev-06); seven survivors delivered to Commander Moroccan Sea Frontier at Casablanca. Second Bogue cruise from 5 May 1944; the force sank RO-501 (ex-U-1224) 13 May; on 29 May Haverfield went out from Casablanca for survivors of escort carrier Block Island (sunk off the Canary Islands), rescuing one of six airborne fighter pilots. Trans-Atlantic HUK missions and Great Barrier patrol to May 1945; Boston overhaul; Cuban-waters training; sailed for the Pacific 19 July 1945 (Pearl Harbor 1 August); Saipan-Okinawa convoy escort; China coast patrol; Boston 15 February 1946; Green Cove Springs 25 March 1946; decommissioned into reserve 30 June 1947. Reclassified DER-393 September 1954; converted to radar picket at the Philadelphia Navy Yard (new electronic detection equipment; 50 tons of keel ballast for topside radar weight); recommissioned there 4 January 1955; homeport Seattle 23 July 1955 as flagship of CortRon 5 on Pacific-coast radar picket; Pearl Harbor 10 April 1959 for the Pacific Barrier; Apra, Guam homeport from 16 May 1960 for Trust Territory surveillance; Operation Cosmos support; bathyscaphe Trieste near-record 19,300-ft Marianas Trench dive support 30 June 1960; ASW/SAR patrols Bonins-Marianas-Carolines; first radar picket escort to operate with the 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific (October 1960); first of type on Formosa Strait patrol (mid-October 1961, relieving John R. Craig DD-885); first ship back into storm-damaged Apra harbor after Typhoon Karen (November 1962); Pearl Harbor homeport March 1965 (Escort Squadron 5); Vietnam 'Market Time' deployments 1965-67 incl. the largest-seizure trawler interception of 20 June 1966 (with USCGC Point League; ~80 tons of arms offloaded) and gunfire support at Phu Quoc Island 6 September 1966. One WWII battle star plus the Presidential Unit Citation for Atlantic antisubmarine work.

Brown Shipbuilding construction trades 1943; wartime and DER-era crew (DANFS design complement 186)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The narrative's '23rd of March' U-575 date conflicts with the contemporaneous action report (14 March 1944, covering the 13 March action) and uboat.net (13 March 1944) - carried in gaps, not silently reconciled. The prisoner-turnover date '18 March' precedes the narrative's own 23 March sinking date - internal inconsistency consistent with a 13 March sinking. Live NHHC page returns 404; verbatim mirror transcriptions cited (HyperWar reads 'RO 501, ex-U-1234'; the destroyers.org April 2016 edition reads 'exU-1224' - the correct former German boat is U-1224; HyperWar digit is a transcription artifact). DANFS spec block complement 186 conflicts with NavSource 8/201 - carried in gaps.

Contemporaneous action report filed by this hull's commanding officer the day after the U-575 action: 'At 1145/N, 13 March, steaming in formation as A/S screen for USS BOGUE ... At 1150 received word that plane had dropped sono buoy in oil slick ... 1151 HAVERFIELD ordered to proceed at full power to scene and conduct search.' The report narrative - Haverfield, HMCS Prince Rupert, and USS Hobson delivering coordinated depth-charge attacks - dates the sinking to 13 March 1944, correcting the DANFS narrative's '23rd of March' reading. It also documents the hull's assignment chain: Escort Division 51 under Task Group 21.11.

The official Booklet of General Plans for this hull survives and is digitized: a 12-sheet set prepared by the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard during the 1954-55 DER conversion (title page marked 'CONVERTED FROM DE 393 (FMR)'), record-verified 28 June 1963, preserved in NARA RG 19. Sheets inspected this session (title; dimensions & data; midship & cross sections; inboard profile) document the DER-configured hull - length between perpendiculars 300 ft, accommodations table, fire plugs, light heights, profiles - and carry no legible insulation or materials callouts in the scanned resolution.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/design inference: an Edsall-class (FMR) destroyer escort built 1943 would have carried era-standard asbestos applications appropriate to a diesel-powered escort - exhaust-system insulation and lagging, gaskets and packing, electrical insulation, brake linings on winches and windlass, fireproofing, and deck coverings. Because the FMR plant has no boilers or steam lines (SDB 1945 design-group-4 machinery row), the largest asbestos categories of steam ships (boiler and steam-line insulation) do not apply to this design. The 1954-55 DER conversion at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard (documented by DANFS, NavSource, and the hull's own Booklet of General Plans) is a second asbestos-use-era construction period for this hull; its materials scope is not public.

    Limitations
Class/era and design inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No insulation schedule or material list for DE-393 or its DER conversion was located; this establishes era-consistent expectation for the type, not that any specific material went aboard this hull. USS Stewart is a Brown Shipbuilding-built Edsall-class hull (DE-238) - same class and same builder as DE-393 - class-level corroboration that Edsall-class construction carried asbestos-containing material.

    Finding
Docketed asbestos personal-injury complaint naming this hull: plaintiff Eusebio V. Jacob alleged employment as a journeyman electrician at the Guam Navy Ship Repair Facility approximately 1962-1985, working 'in and on ships' where asbestos products were used; the complaint recites that defendants' OEM asbestos gaskets and packing were sold to Guam SRF and 'installed in their respective equipment on the following ships ... including: USS Asheville, USS Banner, USS Brister (DER-327), USS Engage (MSO-433), USS Fortify (MSO-446), USS Grasp (ARS-24), USS Haverfield (DER-393), USS Impervious (MSO-449), USS Inflict (MSO-456) and USS Ponchatoula (AO-148).' Exhibit A (a repair-window table abstracted from ship/SRF records) lists '16 USS Haverfield DER-393 1/31/1962 - 5/3/1962 drydocked 2/16 - 4/4 at Guam Naval Station (not listed as SRF); drydocked 9/13 - 10/16' - a Guam drydock window consistent with the hull's 1960-65 Apra homeport documented by DANFS/NavSource. Plaintiff alleged malignant mesothelioma diagnosed about August 2018 (Hawaii Pathologists' Laboratory report 2018-08-02). Defendants: Plastics Engineering Co. The hull is named on a ten-ship pleading list, and the plaintiff's own Exhibit A notes the listed 1962 drydock was 'at Guam Naval Station (not listed as SRF)' - hedging the SRF-installation theory for this hull. Does not establish exposure aboard DER-393, asbestos presence aboard, product identity aboard, or legal eligibility.

Litigation sweep result: one qualifying asbestos docket names this hull (Jacob v. PLENCO, D. Guam 1:19-cv-00108 - see ev-11; pleading-stage allegation, unadjudicated). No published opinion names the hull: '"USS Haverfield"' (type=o) 0 hits; '"DER-393"' (type=o) 0 hits; '"DE-393"' (type=o) 15 hits, all ECF document-entry-number false positives ('[DE 393]' docket-entry citations inside unrelated opinions - United States v. Coffman, Inmuno Vital v. Telemundo, BTG Int'l v. Amneal, Roberts v. Gordy, Church v. Payne, and similar); zero vessel or asbestos references among them. The only docket hit for '"USS Haverfield"' (type=r, count=1) is the Jacob complaint.

    Limitations
Sweep coverage is the CourtListener opinion + RECAP docket indexes only; state-court dockets not mirrored, PACER-only filings, and settled/undocketed claims are outside it. The Jacob hit is a pleading allegation, not a finding. The hull number collides with ECF document-entry numbering ('DE-393' citations). The supplemental '"Haverfield asbestos"' opinion sweep could not be run before fleet pacing closed the session's budget - logged pending in the search ledger.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos-materials record located for DE-393/DER-393: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or museum documentation exists for this hull - it was sold for scrapping to a Taiwan breaker's yard in December 1971, pre-dating the museum-donation and hazmat-disclosure era that produced records for sister hull Stewart (DE-238). The sole ship-specific litigation hit (Jacob, ev-11) is a pleading allegation, not materials documentation. The only 'asbestos' hits naming USS Haverfield (DE-393) in general web search are law-firm marketing listicles that enumerate every WWII hull (asbestos-ships.com, elslaw.com, mesotheliomahelp.org, shepardlawfirm.com) - non-authoritative and excluded by batch rules.

    Limitations
Absence of a located materials record is not proof of absence aboard - 1943 escort construction, the 1954-55 DER conversion, and the 1962 Guam drydock/repair window alleged in Jacob all fall inside the documented Navy asbestos-use era, and sister-hull DE-238 carried documented asbestos. Deck logs for both commissions (RG 24, Archives II - none digitized), the 1963 Booklet of General Plans full set and its RG 19 file unit, and BuShips construction records (incl. any General Information Book for the hull) are unsurveyed leads. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present aboard; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
