- Documented for this hull: 'The second Henry County (LST-824) was laid down as LST-824 by Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co., Evansville, Ind., 28 September 1944; launched 8 November; sponsored by Mrs. Harry W. Groot; and commissioned 30 November, Lt. Jesse D. Jones in command.' Shakedown off Florida; departed New Orleans 4 January 1945 for San Diego (arrived 24th), embarked 107 bluejackets, sailed for Pearl Harbor 26 January; departed Pearl Harbor 12 March via Eniwetok, Guam, Saipan; arrived off China Wan, Okinawa, 17 April 1945 and discharged troops and equipment; returned to Saipan 27 April for reinforcements; shuttled Okinawa-Philippines for the remainder of the war. Occupation service in the Far East, sailed for the U.S. in November, arrived Portland, Oreg., 5 December; 'she decommissioned there 15 May 1946, and joined the Pacific Reserve Fleet. While berthed with the Columbia River Group, LST-824 was named Henry County 1 July 1955.' Recommissioned 5 September 1959, Lt. R. L. Dodd in command; departed the West Coast 19 March 1960, arrived Yokosuka two weeks later; four months of supply transport, Marine training exercises, and joint operations with Korean forces; returned Long Beach 19 August. After 20 months of West Coast operations, sailed for the mid-Pacific April 1962 for transport and amphibious duties out of Hawaii; 'In September she was assigned to Task Force 8 for the nuclear tests in Operation "Dominic."' From December 1962 through December 1964 performed amphibious training off the California coast. Spec block: dp. 1,625; l. 328'; b. 50'; dr. 11'; s. 12 k.; cpl. 266; a. 8 40mm., 12 20mm.; cl. - Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. The DANFS entry predates the ship's Vietnam service (coverage ends December 1964) and contains no final decommissioning, striking, or disposal information - those milestones come from other rows. The printed class designation 'LST-511' conflicts with the LST-542 grouping used by NavSource and the BuShips SD-1945 design grouping; carried as a source anomaly, not resolved.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track DANFS but conflict on the laid-down date (29 vs 28 September). Page contains no asbestos content. 'Decommissioned, date unknown' leaves the second/final decommissioning undocumented here; the 29 August 1969 date in NavalCoverMuseum is likewise secondary. The 1975 strike and 1976 transfer predate modern ACM-handling regulation; no hazmat or material record for the Malaysian handover was located.

- Finding
- NPS documents this hull's birthplace: 'In February 1942, the Department of Navy constructed the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co. Shipyard, also called the Evansville Shipyard. Placed along the Ohio River, the forty-acre plant built 300 feet by 50 feet wide landing ship tanks (LST). Shift workers maintained rapid production throughout the war, resulting in one ship every four days in 1944 and a total of 167 LSTs produced by February 1945 ... the Evansville Shipyard the "largest inland producer of oceangoing ships."' The companion NPS page adds that a fire destroyed the shipyard in January 1946, and that USS LST-325 (NRHP-listed 24 June 2009) is 'the only operational LST in WWII configuration afloat in US waters' and home of the USS LST Ship Memorial at Evansville.

- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- DTRA's official fact sheet documents the operation to which this hull was assigned (DANFS: Task Force 8, September 1962): Operation DOMINIC I was 36 atmospheric nuclear detonations in the Pacific, 25 April - 31 December 1962 - the last U.S. atmospheric test series - conducted by Joint Task Force 8. 'Film badges were issued to personnel stationed on Christmas and Johnston Islands and those in Navy ships directly involved with the tests'; the majority of approximately 25,000 participants were badged, and cumulative exposure records were maintained in a 'Consolidated List of Exposures' held by the NTPR program.

- ~25,000 badged JTF-8 participants, including crews of Navy ships directly involved with the tests
- Limitations
- Operation-level context: the fact sheet never names LST-824 - the hull's TF-8 assignment is documented by DANFS (ev-01), not by this source. This is a radiation-exposure program record (film badges, NTPR dose registry), NOT an asbestos record; it is relevant because Dominic participants are VA-recognized 'atomic veterans' and NTPR holds individual dose records. The full technical report DNA 6040F was not retrievable this session (dtra.mil/dtic.mil serve portal HTML to automated fetches); whether it lists LST-824 in its ship annex is unverified.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered tank landing ship built September-November 1944 at a Navy-constructed wartime yard sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard applications aboard a ship of this type and period were machinery and exhaust-system lagging, gaskets, valve and flange packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, and friction materials. As a diesel ship she carried no steam plant - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - but the enclosed tank deck, engine room, generator spaces, and magazine/accommodation spaces of a 328-foot amphibious ship concentrated era materials in confined compartments.

- Finding
- The VA ships list includes, in its category of ships 'operating primarily or exclusively on Vietnam's inland waterways': 'All vessels with the designation LST [Landing Ship, Tank] during their entire tour [WWII ships converted to transport supplies on rivers and serve as barracks for brown water Mobile Riverine Forces]' - a blanket herbicide-exposure presumption covering LST-824's documented Vietnam tours (1965-1968 campaign windows). Crew of this hull serving aboard during those tours are eligible for the Agent Orange presumption without individually proving they went ashore.

- HERBICIDE record, not an asbestos record - it names no asbestos content and must not be cited for asbestos aboard this hull. The designation-level entry does not name LST-824 individually; the hull's qualifying service windows are established by the NavSource campaign table (ev-02). The hosted copy is an older C&P Service version; the current VA list is maintained under M21-1 and the blanket LST designation persists across versions, but the erie.gov copy's exact revision date is unverified.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or verified litigation naming USS LST-824 / USS Henry County was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - the authenticated helper reported the shared fleet daily quota exhausted (server-requested wait ~9.8 h) - logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content (gorilaw.com, navyshipexposure.com, mesotheliomaweb.org and similar listicles) asserting asbestos aboard LSTs without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.
