- Finding
- NHHC DANFS identifies Hogan (DD-178) as a Wickes-class destroyer launched by Union Iron Works, San Francisco, on 12 April 1919 and commissioned 1 October 1919; design complement 101. It decommissioned 27 May 1922; recommissioned 7 August 1940; was converted to high-speed minesweeper DMS-6 at Mare Island; served in convoy escort and North Africa, Hollandia, Saipan, Guam, Lingayen Gulf, and Iwo Jima operations; underwent repairs at San Francisco in 1944; was reclassified AG-105 on 5 June 1945; and was sunk as a bombing target off San Diego on 8 November 1945. DANFS credits six World War II battle stars.

- Limitations
- DANFS is a service history, not a material inventory. It does not identify asbestos aboard this hull, conversion or repair material specifications, a final decommissioning date, or exact wreck coordinates. Design complement is not verified wartime crew strength.

[3]National Archives, Special List 44, Named Vessels, Hogan (DD-178) entries [other_primary]
- Locator
- Alphabetical table, Hogan (DD-178), two rows
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's Special List 44 separately indexes Hogan (DD-178) deck-log spans 30 September 1919 to 27 May 1922 and 7 August 1940 to 11 October 1945.

- Limitations
- The table indexes log date spans, not individual log contents or formal decommissioning dates. NARA explicitly states deck logs and muster rolls do not directly establish asbestos presence or use.

- Finding type

- Finding
- NARA identifies potentially responsive collections for ship-specific asbestos investigation: RG 19 Bureau of Ships correspondence and Ship General Information Books; RG 38 destroyer or minecraft inspection reports; and RG 19 hull-number engineering drawings, including S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping material groups where available. No DD-178 item from these series was retrieved for this batch.

- Locator
- search_ledger sl-uss-hogan-dd178-01 through sl-uss-hogan-dd178-05
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The reviewed public NHHC DANFS entry, NARA deck-log index, and NARA asbestos research guide did not provide ship-specific asbestos documentation for Hogan. Public-source searches for Hogan by name, DD-178, DMS-6, and AG-105 did not locate an authoritative ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement report, material specification, or product identification. The authenticated CourtListener search was not completed because the fleet pacing limiter denied access before an HTTP request was sent.

- Limitations
- This is a scoped negative search result, not evidence that Hogan lacked asbestos or that no relevant archival record exists. CourtListener results remain unknown until authenticated name and hull searches succeed.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NARA identifies use of asbestos in U.S. Navy materiel during 1941-61 as a research topic and directs investigators to vessel-specific Bureau of Ships records to determine whether particular ships had asbestos aboard. Hogan served during 1941-45, but its own asbestos material status is unverified.
