    Finding
The third USS Hopkins was a Clemson-class destroyer built by New York Shipbuilding Corporation at Camden, New Jersey; launched 26 June 1920; commissioned 21 March 1921 at Philadelphia; design complement 101. She was converted to high-speed minesweeper DMS-13 at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, operated in the Pacific war, decommissioned at Norfolk 21 December 1945, and sold for scrapping 8 November 1946.

Design complement 101; actual wartime crew not verified
    Limitations
DANFS establishes identity and service history only. It does not identify asbestos, installed products, maintenance conditions, individual exposure or a wartime crew count. The entry has an apparent '37 May' date typo, which is excluded.

    Finding
NARA Special List 44 indexes Hopkins as DMS-13 with a service span of 21 March 1921 through 21 December 1945. The Navy's 1941 filing manual cross-references DD249 Hopkins as DMS13.

    Limitations
NARA's log index and the filing manual establish name, hull crosswalk and record span, not asbestos materials or crew exposure. The underlying logs were not reviewed.

    Finding
NARA's asbestos research guide states that asbestos was used in U.S. Navy materiel during 1941-1961 and that research is required to determine whether an individual vessel had asbestos material. The 1941 Navy filing manual identifies S39 as insulation and lagging, including boilers, machinery, and steam piping, but does not identify the material composition for Hopkins.

1941-1961 research scope; Hopkins served 1921-1945
    Limitations
Supports class/era-level prioritization only. The NARA guide is fleet context and the filing manual is a record-classification tool. Neither identifies a Hopkins-specific product, location, quantity or exposure. Insulation and lagging are not proof of asbestos composition.

    historical_record
    Finding
NARA's vessel asbestos research guide identifies RG 19 hull correspondence, destroyer general information books, and ship engineering drawings under S39 insulation and lagging as relevant avenues for testing material claims for an individual vessel. These holdings are archival leads for DD249/DMS13.

Research guidance for 1941-1961 Navy records
    Limitations
The guide does not claim that Hopkins has a surviving GIB or S39 drawing and does not establish asbestos aboard her. No underlying RG 19 file was retrieved in this batch.

    Limitations
