- Finding
- Hopocan (YN-33) was built as the diesel-powered steel tug Carmelite in 1937 by Ira S. Bushey & Sons, Brooklyn, New York; acquired by the Navy from the builder on 1940-08-16; and placed in service as a net tender on 1940-09-09 after conversion at New York Navy Yard. The DANFS narrative states assignment to the 15th Naval District, departure Hampton Roads on 1940-10-30, and arrival in the Canal Zone on 1940-11-13. It was redesignated YNT-1 on 1942-04-08, departed Cristobal on 1942-07-17 for 10th Naval District duty in the Aruba-Curacao area, was assigned to Naval Base Trinidad in October 1944, redesignated YTM-728 on 1945-08-04 for harbor tug duties at Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, placed out of service at Brooklyn on 1946-08-02, stricken on 1946-08-15, and transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal in May 1947. DANFS gives 129 displacement tons, 90-foot length, 22-foot-6-inch beam, 11-foot-4-inch draft, and 11-knot speed.

[3]U.S. Navy, Ships’ Data, U.S. Naval Vessels (1945), printed pp. 545–547, “Net Tenders (Tug Class) (YNT)” (official Navy reference reproduced in a digitized PDF hosted by Shipscribe) [other_primary]

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The 1945 Navy net-tender table lists YNT-1 HOPOCAN, ex-YN-33 and ex-Carmelite; gives 90 feet length, 22 feet 6 inches beam, 11 feet draft, and 735 shaft horsepower; allocates the vessel to the 10th Naval District; and describes it as diesel powered, metal-arc-welded construction, built by A. S. Bushey & Sons, Inc., Brooklyn, New York, in 1937, purchased by the Navy in August 1940, and converted at New York Navy Yard. The table documents official YNT-1 usage in 1945, distinct from DANFS’s account of the earlier 15th Naval District assignment and later Aruba-Curacao/Trinidad duty.

[4]Research log for this batch: reviewed NHHC DANFS and the 1945 Navy Ships’ Data entry; attempted one authenticated CourtListener exact-name opinion query, then received the helper’s fleet-wide pacing stand-down before docket or hull-number queries could be run. [other_primary]

- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, asbestos inventory, or asbestos litigation record was located in the materials successfully reviewed for this record. This is a limited search result, not evidence that asbestos was absent. CourtListener litigation review is incomplete: the exact-name opinion attempt did not yield a retrievable result in this session, and the helper then directed a stand-down before the remaining three required base queries.

- Limitations
- Search-limited negative finding only. The required CourtListener four-query sweep was not completed because the authenticated helper reported the fleet-wide hourly pacing budget was momentarily spent. No asbestos presence, absence, litigation result, or exposure conclusion may be inferred from this row.
