- Finding
- DANFS records Humphreys entering Mare Island Navy Yard after reaching San Francisco on 11 November 1942 for conversion to high-speed transport, reclassification as APD-12 on 1 December 1942, a 1944 conversion to carry Underwater Demolition Teams after reaching San Francisco on 30 May, and reclassification as DD-236 on 20 July 1945. Its APD service included troop and supply transport in the Solomons and New Guinea, UDT Team 5 support at Leyte and Lingayen, and escort service during the Okinawa campaign. NHHC credits seven World War II battle stars.

- Finding
- NARA's Ship Plan Index lists HUMPHREYS DD-236 in RG 19 Alphabetical Ship Drawings (NAID 53484302) and Microfilm (NAID 175669413). These are hull-specific archival leads for reviewing plans and any available material details.

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NARA's guide to researching asbestos aboard U.S. naval vessels through 1961 identifies RG 19 destroyer General Information Books and S39 insulation and lagging and S48 piping drawings as research paths. It says deck logs and muster rolls do not directly evidence asbestos aboard a ship.

[6]Bounded negative result from NHHC, NARA, and GAO review; see search_ledger [other_primary]
- Locator
- Search ledger sl-01 through sl-05
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The official vessel history, NARA index and research guide, and GAO review examined here did not yield a Humphreys-specific asbestos survey, product schedule, abatement record, or material finding. Asbestos content aboard DD-236/APD-12 remains unknown.

- Limitations
- A bounded source search is not proof that asbestos was absent. The underlying NARA plans, possible General Information Books, Mare Island work packages, and disposal records were not reviewed.

[7]CourtListener authenticated API v4 opinion and RECAP docket search responses via fleet helper, 27 September 2026 [court_record]
- Locator
- Search ledger sl-07 through sl-12; DD-236 docket hit URLs recorded in sl-10
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener API v4 searches returned count 0 for exact-name 'USS Humphreys' opinions and dockets and exact-hull 'DD-236' opinions. The 'DD-236' docket search returned four civil-rights matters: Portier, LLC v. City of New York; DoorDash, Inc. v. City of New York; Estate of William Zackary Harvey v. Minter; and Manganiello v. City of New York. Their returned case metadata identifies non-asbestos litigation, and the New York delivery-app docket text uses DD-236 as an exhibit label. A supplementary 'APD-12' opinion search returned five nonqualifying other-litigation/search-collision cases (listed in sl-11); its docket query was blocked by fleet pacing. No qualifying Humphreys asbestos case was located in the four required searches.

- Limitations
- This is a bounded public-index search, not proof that no asbestos case exists. The four DD-236 docket matches and five APD-12 opinion matches are classified as other litigation/search collisions from returned metadata and excerpts; incidental string contexts in the two non-New-York-delivery dockets and five APD-12 opinions were not verified from complete texts. The APD-12 docket query returned no result because of fleet pacing. No pleading or merits-stage exposure record naming this hull was returned.

It records decommissioning on 10 January 1930 and 14 September 1938, recommissioning on 13 June 1932 and 26 September 1939, final decommissioning on 26 October 1945, and sale for scrap on 26 August 1946 to National Metal & Steel Corp., Terminal Island, California.
