- Finding
- MARAD identifies USNS Huntsville (T-AGM-7), formerly Knox Victory, as a 1945 Oregon Shipbuilding Company vessel built in Portland, Oregon. The detail page identifies a missile range instrumentation ship and original MARAD type VC2-S-AP3. The status card records MSC Navy service before lay-up. Use USNS for this hull; retain uss-huntsville only as the requested stable file/record identifier.

- Finding
- NASA’s September 15, 1967 report identifies Huntsville (T-AGM-7) for planned Apollo spacecraft reentry tracking and describes modified CAPRI C-band radar aboard Huntsville as part of its current 1967 equipment review. This establishes Cold War instrumentation context rather than WWII service under the Huntsville name.

- The report describes equipment and planned mission use; it is not proof of participation in every planned mission. It says nothing about asbestos composition, occupational exposure or product installation beyond radar equipment.

- Finding
- Morgan v. Huntington Ingalls, M.D. La. No. 3:17-cv-00269-JWD-MBN, Doc. 101 (June 21, 2017), reports discovery in an asbestos action by a 1966 Avondale worker. Medical records were offered as indicating work/injuries on Huntsville. Morgan lacked specific memory of the ship, conditionally agreed he worked there if the records so indicated, and assented to counsel’s question about a belief that he likewise worked around insulators there. The court remanded for untimely removal; this order was later vacated.

- Limitations
- Discovery-stage testimony and medical-record characterization reported in a procedural order; neither asbestos aboard Huntsville nor exposure/causation was adjudicated. The referenced deposition and medical exhibit were not independently retrieved. Detailed dust/wallboard testimony on pp. 3-4 concerns a Lykes vessel and must not be transferred to Huntsville. Court usage of USS is preserved only in source discussion; canonical prefix is USNS.

- Finding
- In Morgan v. Huntington Ingalls, No. 17-30523 (January 11, 2018), the Fifth Circuit held that the removal clock began on receipt of the deposition transcript, vacated the remand order and returned the matter for consideration of federal-officer jurisdiction. Murphy Oil’s appeal was dismissed for lack of standing. Footnote 3 describes Huntsville’s mid-1960s Apollo conversion and Avondale’s subcontract.

- This appellate disposition concerns removal timing and standing, not asbestos exposure or liability. It does not elevate the discovery record to a trial finding or affirmed exposure judgment. Later merits disposition remains unverified.

- Finding
- GAO’s 1979 Navy review describes asbestos thermal insulation as a major historical shipboard application and discusses Navy-wide replacement policies. This supplies Navy-era asbestos background only.

- Limitations
- GAO fieldwork was at Long Beach and Norfolk, not a Huntsville survey or Avondale investigation. The report postdates Huntsville’s recorded scrap sale. Applying this background to prioritize research is contextual inference; it does not establish material presence, location, quantity, exposure, causation or retained asbestos aboard this hull.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No hull-specific material survey, abatement record, asbestos product identification or adjudicated exposure finding was located in the sources reviewed. Ship-specific asbestos material documentation remains unknown. A discovery-stage Huntsville connection in Morgan is retained separately; the CourtListener sweep was incomplete.
