Consolidated Steel Corp. construction trades (Orange, TX, 1943); wartime and postwar crew (design complement 186 per DANFS)
    Limitations
DANFS documents service history and specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The entry predates disposal (ends 'at Norfolk, Va., where she remains') and does not state the laid-down date, the day-level final decommissioning date, the striking date, or the sale record - those come from NavSource/NHHC photo page (ev-02, ev-03). Live NHHC page returns 404 as of 2026-09-28; verbatim transcription cited via Wayback capture of 2025-01-20.

Day-level build/disposal detail for this hull not present in DANFS: keel laid 11 January 1943 at Consolidated Steel Corp., Orange, Tex.; decommissioned 30 June 1965 at the South Gate Annex, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, Va. after 13 years 10 months service; struck from the NVR 1 August 1973; sold for scrapping 24 June 1974 to Aardvark International Corp., Chester, Pa., for $55,916.00; the Department of Defense bid list for scrapping DEs 145 and 152 (Huse and Peterson) is dated 11 June 1974 (uboat.net's 'sold 11 June 1974' reflects the bid-list date).

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-compiled archive, not an official repository; its timeline transcribes primary sources (NVR extracts, DoD bid list, 8th Naval District press release - images hosted on the page) but those scans were not independently verified. NHHC corroborates the month-level facts (stricken Aug 1973, sold June 1974). No materials or asbestos content.

    Finding
Era documentation (1946 USPHS/Harvard survey, PubMed-indexed): amosite asbestos was a standard ingredient of pipe covering used on U.S. Navy vessels, with asbestos cloth and asbestos cement also in naval use; chest X-rays of 1,074 pipe coverers at two government Navy yards and two Navy contract yards found 3 asbestosis cases, all in men with more than 20 years of pipe-covering exposure. Establishes that asbestos thermal insulation and allied products were standard Navy construction materials during this hull's 1943 build era and documents construction-trade exposure conditions at Navy yards and contract yards like Consolidated Steel's.

    Population
WWII naval-vessel construction pipe coverers at two Navy yards and two contract yards (1,074 X-rayed)
    Limitations
Class/era evidence only - the study does not name DE-145 or Consolidated Steel, Orange (yards are anonymized A-D); it documents construction-trade exposure and Navy-standard materials, not installation aboard any specific hull. As a diesel-electric escort this ship carried no boilers or steam propulsion, so the thermal pipe-covering scope aboard would have been narrower than on steam combatants. Does not establish presence, quantity, or condition of asbestos aboard DE-145.

  6. [6]CourtListener API v4 litigation sweep, 2026-09-28: "USS Huse" (type=o, type=r) and "DE-145" (type=o, type=r) [court_record]

    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Litigation sweep: "USS Huse" returned zero opinions and zero dockets. "DE-145" returned 34 opinions and 798 dockets, all matching 'DE 145' as a docket-entry citation (e.g., '(DE 145)' = docket entry 145 in unrelated federal orders) rather than the vessel - sampled snippets confirm the collision class (e.g., Salgado v. City of West Miami, S.D. Fla., order taxing costs 'DE 145'; Lima v. MH & WH, E.D.N.C., motions 'DE 137, 142'). No qualifying asbestos litigation, and no litigation of any kind naming this hull, was located. DE-145 was the only U.S. Navy vessel named Huse (DANFS), so had any exact-name hit existed it would be unambiguous.

    Limitations
Negative finding bounded by index coverage: CourtListener's holdings for older district asbestos dockets and unindexed state filings are incomplete, so absence here does not prove no suit was ever filed. The 'DE-145' queries cannot exclude docket-entry collisions by phrase alone; classification rests on snippet review of the result set.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, material specification, VA BVA decision, or docketed case naming DE-145 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was sold for scrapping in June 1974, so no present-day survey is possible.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove asbestos absent aboard - the 1943 Navy construction era makes some asbestos use plausible, and diesel-electric propulsion narrows but does not eliminate likely applications. This record asserts neither presence nor absence aboard the hull and speaks to no claim of individual exposure or legal eligibility.
