    Finding
Official hull history: laid down 12 May 1904 at Philadelphia by William Cramp & Sons; launched 9 Dec 1905; commissioned Philadelphia Navy Yard, League Island, 1 Apr 1908. DANFS documents an unusually yard-intensive career - repair periods at Philadelphia Navy Yard Jul-Sep 1908, Oct 1908-Feb 1909, May-Jul 1909 (incl. drydocking), Oct 1909-Jan 1910, Apr-Jul 1910, Oct 1910, Apr-May 1911, Sep-Dec 1911, Dec 1911-Jan 1912, Feb-Aug 1912 (roughly six months of repairs after the starboard engine broke down at Guantanamo), Dec 1912, Apr 1913 - plus a Norfolk Navy Yard visit 14-17 Sep 1908 installing the new cage mainmast. Placed in Atlantic Reserve Fleet 27 Oct 1913; recommissioned 16 Mar 1914; sold to intermediary Fred J. Gauntlett 8 Jul 1914; formally transferred to the Royal Hellenic Navy 30 Jul 1914 at Villefranche and renamed Lemnos. Served in the Crimean expedition and off Constantinople/Smyrna (1919-22); 'ineffective' by early 1930s, harbor duty at Salamis; damaged by Luftflotte 4 Ju 87 dive bombers at Salamis 23 Apr 1941, beached; hulk scrapped after WWII.

    Limitations
Ship-specific official history establishing construction, an exceptionally heavy Navy-yard repair record (all relevant to material-disturbance analysis), the foreign transfer, and the 1941 loss - but the entry contains no asbestos, insulation, or abatement content whatsoever.

    Finding
Official class page confirms both class members built at the William Cramp & Sons shipyard, Philadelphia; that Mississippi and Idaho were 'the only U.S. Navy battleships ever to be transferred to a foreign power' (sold to Greece July 1914); that both received cage mainmasts and then cage foremasts (1910) in the standard pre-dreadnought modernization pattern; and that they were 'the first American-built battleships to be lost to hostile air attack' (April 1941).

    Finding type

    Finding
The BuShips Technical Manual insulation chapter enumerates the asbestos material suite standard to Navy steam plants of this ship's era family: MIL-P-2781 pipe covering including 85% magnesia (~15% asbestos fiber) and amosite-fiber classes; roll asbestos felt MIL-I-15091; asbestos cloth/tape SS-C-466 (80-95% chrysotile) lagging; asbestos millboard HH-M-351; asbestos finishing cement; molded asbestos block. The same magnesia/asbestos insulation family was era-standard at this hull's 1904-08 construction, and the documented 1908-14 Philadelphia Navy Yard repair periods - including roughly six months of engine repairs in 1912 - are disturbance events in which such insulation would have been worked.

    Limitations
Specification-level documentation of era-standard materials; the manual postdates this hull's U.S. service by decades but describes the insulation family in continuous Navy use from the magnesia era forward. Does not name this hull, does not quantify material aboard, and does not establish what was installed, disturbed, or retained on this ship. Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no insulation survey, abatement contract, museum hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming BB-24 (or Greek Lemnos) was found in the public sources searched. 'USS Idaho' collides with BB-42 (the hull asbestos-marketing pages mean), SSN-799 (commissioned 2026), and a States Steamship merchant vessel 'USS IDAHO' named in Broussard v. Huntington Ingalls (E.D. La.) - every hit reviewed was a name collision or non-qualifying. CourtListener was blocked on 2026-09-18, but an authenticated API re-sweep on 2026-09-20 (search_ledger sl-12/-13) covered opinions, RECAP dockets, and RECAP full text and confirmed the negative: zero qualifying hits, both literal 'USS Idaho' documents verified as collisions (merchant vessel; game product).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1904-08 construction plus the heavy 1908-14 yard repair record is consistent with era-standard asbestos materials. Litigation negative now rests on an authenticated CourtListener sweep (2026-09-20) across opinion and docket/full-text indexes; residual caveat: RECAP coverage of pre-PACER-era dockets is incomplete, so ancient unindexed filings cannot be excluded.

  6. [6]GlobalSecurity BB-23 Mississippi class unit page + hazegray.org legacy DANFS transcription (bb24.htm) - both carrying the swapped Greek-name error [other_primary]

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
Legacy secondary sources swap the sisters' Greek names: globalsecurity's BB-23 class page states BB-24 Idaho 'served as coastal defense ship KILKIS' and assigns LEMNOS to BB-23 - the reverse of the correct mapping - and the older (pre-Cressman) hazegray DANFS transcription repeats 'Kilkis' for Idaho. The Cressman-rewritten DANFS entry, Navypedia (BB-24 = Limnos), and Wikipedia concur Idaho (BB-24) became Lemnos and Mississippi (BB-23) became Kilkis. Separately, NavSource dates the sinking '10 April 1941'; DANFS, ww2db, and Wikipedia concur on 23 April 1941 - the DANFS date is carried.
