DANFS record for this hull: ordered for the Royal Navy under Lend-Lease as HMS Brutus (BAM-7); reclassified/renamed Impeccable (AM-320) 23 January 1943; laid down 1 February 1943; launched 21 May 1943 by General Engineering & Dry Dock Co., Alameda, Calif., sponsored by Mrs. Agnes W. Hanson; commissioned 24 April 1944 (DANFS gives the commanding officer's initials only and the mirrors garble them - 'H. H. Smith' at koreanwar.org, 'El. H. Smith' at historycentral.com; NavSource identifies LCDR Bryan Hooker Smith, Jr., USNR). Shakedown off California; sailed 3 July 1944 on Pacific escort duty; Pearl Harbor-Eniwetok to November; Palaus November-December 1944; patrol/escort out of Ulithi early 1945; departed 19 March 1945 for the Okinawa assault; arrived off the island 24 March sweeping approach and transport areas; air attack 28 March; screening duties from the 1 April assault; air attack at Kerama Retto 6 April; Hagushi beaches patrol and picket; 20 May alongside kamikaze-damaged USS Chase giving assistance; rescue duties for other damaged screening/escort ships; sailed 1 July for Guam; returned to Okinawa with resupply convoy, sailed again 16 August (day after the armistice), Okinawa 21 August; swept Wakayama approaches September and November 1945 in occupation support; departed Sasebo 20 November; San Francisco 15 December 1945; decommissioned at Terminal Island 27 March 1947. Recommissioned 12 March 1952; sailed 3 September for Sasebo; Wonsan naval siege and mine clearance; amphibious feint at Kojo 12-14 October exchanging fire with shore batteries; drove a sampan ashore off Hungnam 17 November 1952; fought Wonsan batteries 20 February 1953 while covering a minesweeping operation; Pearl Harbor 31 March, homeport Long Beach 10 April 1953; training/readiness off Mexico and the Canal Zone through 1953; minesweeping and fleet maneuvers through first half of 1955; reclassified MSF-320 7 February 1955; arrived Astoria, Oreg., 16 August 1955; decommissioned 14 October; Pacific Reserve Fleet Bremerton. General Engineering & Dry Dock construction trades 1943-44; wartime and Korea-era crew (class design complement 105)
    Limitations
DANFS documents identity, construction, and service history - not materials or asbestos content. Live NHHC DANFS page returned 404 on 2026-09-22; verbatim transcription mirrors cited (historycentral carries the full narrative including the WWII section; koreanwar.org carries an abridged text covering the Korea/postwar paragraphs). NavSource conflicts on the 1947 decommissioning location (San Diego vs DANFS Terminal Island) and NavalCoverMuseum on the commissioning day (29 vs 24 April) - carried in gaps. Wikipedia adds a 18 October 1952 Sondok engagement detail and names USS Condor (AMS-5) as the covered sweeper on 20 February 1953; neither is in the DANFS text and neither is carried.

NavSource archive record for this hull adds detail not in DANFS: originally planned as HMS Brutus (BAM-7); reclassified/renamed Impeccable (AM-320) 23 January 1943; laid down 1 February 1943; launched 21 May 1943; call sign N-C-M-Z; Naval Vessel Register of 1 January 1949 lists the planned decommissioning/in-reserve date as August 1946 (a stale plan entry postdating the actual March 1947 decommissioning); decommissioned 27 March 1947 at San Diego (vs DANFS 'Terminal Island' - conflict carried in gaps); struck from the Naval Register 1 July 1972; sold for scrap 1 April 1974. Commanding officers: LCDR Bryan Hooker Smith, Jr., USNR (24 April 1944 - 8 March 1946); LT Robert Charles Burnett, USNR (8 March 1946 - 27 March 1947). Ship-specific propulsion block: two 1,988 shp Baldwin VO8 diesel-electric drive engines, Westinghouse single reduction gear, two shafts. Photo evidence: under-construction view dated 15 March 1944 at the Alameda yard (bow number 57; USS Pocatello PF-9 in frame; U.S. Navy photo).

NavSource is a private archival-photo compendium, not a government source - details used here (NVR 1949 note, CO roster, engine rating, 1947 decommissioning location, construction photo) are not independently verified against official records, though the chronology is consistent with DANFS/NHC. The 1,988 shp per-engine figure conflicts with the 2,976 shp reading on NavSource sister pages and the Wikipedia infobox - carried in gaps. Does not address materials or asbestos. Finding
Builder-yard record for the yard that built this hull: General Engineering & Dry Dock Co. of Alameda (successor to the 1917 Barnes & Tibbitts yard, renamed 1922) built small warships for the U.S. Navy under Contract NObs-344 on four shipbuilding ways with seven fitting-out piers, two marine railways, and a floating dry dock; wartime production included 16 minesweepers of the 1,250-ton group, 11 of the 850-ton group (the Auk-class group this hull belongs to), and four 560-ton net layers. The Navy terminated the contract in 1946; the yard closed in 1948 and the Navy acquired the site 27 June 1950 as Naval Industrial Reserve Shipyard Alameda. The City of Alameda HRE documents the 1940 Maritime Commission-financed rebuild (dry dock plus ~30 shops, warehouses, offices) and the 1962 Pacific Shops acquisition; the site is now Alameda Marina.

Documents the builder yard's wartime configuration and contract - not asbestos conditions, not hull-specific materials, and no exposure data for GE&DD workers. The Atlas shipyards dataset (37 yard_ids) contains no General Engineering & Dry Dock entry - the yard link is carried here and in gaps, not in related_shipyards. 5. [5]DANFS specifications block + Auk/Raven class technical block (diesel-electric drive, twin screws, ~3,500 hp class figure) + documented status/yard events for this hull (GE&DD construction 1943-44; Terminal Island decommissioning 1947; March 1952 recommissioning, site unstated; Astoria decommissioning and Bremerton reserve layup 1955) [other_primary]

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/class inference: a Navy-contract diesel-electric minesweeper built 1943-44 would have carried period-standard asbestos applications typical of the type - engine-exhaust and muffler lagging, gaskets and flange packing on piping and machinery, electrical cable insulation, deck tile/coverings, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and brake linings on sweep winches and windlass. The diesel-electric plant (Baldwin VO8 diesels on electric drive, no boilers) means the boiler-room and steam-line insulation load characteristic of steam combatants did not apply to this hull.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, build specification, or abatement record was located, and nothing here is ship-proven. Does not establish asbestos presence aboard this hull, quantity, or material status at any point in the hull's life; does not establish or defeat any exposure or legal-eligibility claim. HyperWar carries no transcribed DANFS page for AM-320 (404) - the class technical block is cited via the AM-319 sister page.

    Finding
GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program and 1975/1979 insulation-removal policies, with fieldwork at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards. The Long Beach yard occupies the Terminal Island site where DANFS records this hull's 1947 decommissioning, and Long Beach was the hull's documented 1953-55 homeport - the relevant program-level context for any yard-side insulation work touching this hull.

Navy shipyard workers; asbestos program review
    Limitations
Yard/program-level documentation, not hull-specific; the GAO fieldwork postdates this hull's USN service and its policy scope concerns naval shipyards generally. Does not establish what insulation was aboard or disturbed on this hull. Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming AM-320 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener API returned HTTP 429 (2,800/day quota exhausted) - the docket-level litigation check is blocked, not negative; indexed court/VA searches returned no qualifying hit. Name-collision note: the only other Navy ship named Impeccable is USNS Impeccable (T-AGOS-23), the Impeccable-class ocean surveillance ship in service since 22 March 2001 (MSC, Tampa/Halter Marine build, SURTASS) - heavily indexed by the March 2009 South China Sea incident - so post-2001 'Impeccable' references are presumptively T-AGOS-23 and must be hull-checked; the everyday adjective adds noise to unqualified name searches. Law-firm marketing pages list this hull in minesweeper tables - excluded as non-authoritative.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - WWII Navy construction of the era is consistent with era materials having been installed. The hull was sold for scrap in 1974, so present-day material questions are moot; the scrapping site is undocumented. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present; does not establish or defeat any exposure or legal-eligibility claim.
