- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and the spec block (2,050 tons; 376'6"; 37 kt; complement 273; Fletcher class), not materials or asbestos content. The entry ends at the 1961 Peruvian loan - all post-1961 history (1974 striking, 1981 scrapping) rests on secondary sources. No laid-down date is stated in the DANFS text. - Finding
- Era inference: a Fletcher-class destroyer built 1942-43 with a four-boiler 60,000-shp steam plant would have carried period-standard asbestos insulation, lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing (the documented peak-era Navy fit). Unlike registry Fletcher Kidd (DD-661, Federal-Kearny), this hull's builder - Bethlehem's Mariners Harbor (Staten Island) plant - has no yard-level record in the Atlas shipyards dataset, so no builder-yard industrial-hygiene record is available to contextualize construction-phase exposure; NARA RG19 'General Information Books' per-hull material specifications remain an archival lead.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - NOT a hull-specific finding. No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, or material schedule was located for DD-520; absence of the builder yard from the Atlas dataset removes even the yard-level context available for sister hulls. Does not quantify material or establish any individual's exposure.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - placing this hull's entire U.S. Navy career (built 1942-43; in USN service 1943-1946 and 1951-1961) inside the documented asbestos-use era.

- Finding
- CourtListener name and hull-number sweep: indexed hits for 'Isherwood'/'DD-520' classify as name collisions (persons surnamed Isherwood; 'DD-520' as a part/model number or OCR artifact in patent, criminal, and bankruptcy dockets). One qualifying-domain asbestos personal-injury docket surfaced - ISHERWOOD v. OWENS CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP. (E.D. Pa. 2:10-cv-60129, filed 2010-01-12, terminated 2010-05-03, Judge Robreno, MDL-875 posture) - but 'Isherwood' there is the PLAINTIFF'S surname; no indexed RECAP document is available, so whether the complaint names USS Isherwood (DD-520) as an exposure vessel is unverified (see ev-07). No asbestos litigation verified to name this hull. The earlier USS Isherwood (DD-284, Clemson-class, scrapped 1930s) predates the indexed asbestos-litigation era.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for DD-520: no hull ACM survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos case names this hull. The hull was scrapped in Peru (1981, secondary sources) after 20 years of Peruvian service; no museum phase, no NRHP/NHL nomination, and no repatriation, so no preservation-era documentation channel exists. Open-web 'asbestos ship' listings for DD-520 are law-firm marketing pages (excluded per sourcing rules); one such page narrates a 1956-1960 engine-room claimant ('Bailey G.') that no public docket could be located to verify.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942-43 Fletcher's era-standard insulated fit is documented at class/era level. Peruvian-service materials modifications, the 1975 quarterdeck landing-platform refit, and the 1981 scrapping are undocumented; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Asbestos personal-injury docket surfaced by the 'Isherwood' + asbestos RECAP-index query. The plaintiff's surname is Isherwood - a surname match, not an indexed vessel reference. No RECAP documents are retrievable for this docket, so whether the underlying complaint alleges exposure aboard USS Isherwood (DD-520) is unverified; the Navy-veteran-ship coincidence (plaintiff surnamed Isherwood possibly serving aboard USS Isherwood) is possible but cannot be confirmed from public index data.

- Population
- Plaintiff surnamed Isherwood (unverified relationship to this hull)
- Limitations
- UNRESOLVED surname/docket lead only - on the indexed record this is a person-surnamed-Isherwood asbestos case, not a case naming the hull. Even if the complaint names DD-520, a complaint's vessel list is a pleading-stage allegation, not an adjudicated finding; it would not establish asbestos presence, causation, or product identity aboard. Case terminated 2010-05-03 (~4 months) consistent with MDL-875 administrative disposition. PACER/originating-district pull not performed.
