    Limitations
Authoritative for register identity, strike, and disposal milestones. The record is thin: no reclassification date, no dimensions, no commission/decommission fields (typical for unclassified service craft). The builder field 'Naval Shipyard Pearl Harbor' conflicts with secondary sources attributing 1943 construction to Everett-Pacific - treated here as a later-custody/conversion artifact, not original build. No asbestos, materials, or condition information; supports no asbestos claim.

    Finding
DANFS (NHHC) entry for Artisan documents the parent dock this section was part of: ABSD-1 constructed in sections 1942-1943 by Everett Shipbuilding Co. (Everett WA), Chicago Bridge & Iron (Eureka CA), Pollack-Stockton Shipbuilding (Stockton CA), and Chicago Bridge & Iron (Morgan City LA); commissioned 1943-05-10 at Everett, Capt. Andrew R. Mack; towed in two convoys to Espiritu Santo (one section sank during assembly 1943-11-02, 13 drowned); operated as an 8- then 10-section dock at Espiritu Santo through April 1945; disassembled and moved to Manicani Bay, Leyte Gulf, reassembled by mid-September 1945, working through February 1946; decommissioned 1946-05-31; redesignated AFDB-1 August 1946; laid up Pearl Harbor; recommissioned 1951-06-02, Capt. O.J. Stien USNR; at Guam by March 1952; inactive at Guam from January 1955 for ~15 years; five sections moved to Subic Bay, in service 1970-11-17; named Artisan 1979-06-07; out of service and stricken October 1986; reinstated March 1987.

    Limitations
Entry documents the assembled 10-section dock of which IX-525 was Section C; it contains no section-level detail (does not identify which sections went to Subic, or Section C's individual stations) and no asbestos, insulation, or materials statement. Ends at the March 1987 reinstatement; the later IX reclassification is outside the entry's scope.

Single-section spec block for IX-521/IX-525: 3,500 t, 280 ft, 80 ft beam, 9 ft light draft.

    Limitations
Secondary compiled archive, not an official record - used for section-level disposition detail the official sources lack; key facts corroborated by DANFS/NVR where they overlap. The 'Active at PMRF Kekaha' status is stale - superseded by NVR (stricken 2009-06-22, DRMS sale 2010-03-17). Per-section spec figures (3,500 t/280 ft) differ from BuDocks design values (~3,850 t/256 ft) - both logged, neither adjudicated. No asbestos information; supports no asbestos claim.

The official 1947 Bureau of Yards and Docks history documents the ABSD section design and equipment fit: each bottom pontoon (28 ft deep) was subdivided into twelve water ballast compartments plus a central buoyancy compartment (36 ft x 80 ft) with two decks - crew's quarters above, machinery compartment below; wing walls (20 ft x 55 ft) contained dry compartments used for shops and storage; each section carried two 525-hp diesel engines driving 350-kW generators plus pumps, evaporators, compressors, and heating/ventilating apparatus; each dock had two 15-ton portal jib cranes. Crew quarters and galleys were in the pontoon dry compartments.

    Population
Section crews (quartered in pontoon compartments); construction trades at the six contract yards, 1942-1944
    Limitations
Official class/design documentation of the ABSD type, not a hull record - describes equipment and spaces aboard sections of this design generally, does not name Section C or AFDB-1, and contains no asbestos or insulation-material statement. Supports only era-consistent inference about the categories of equipment (diesel machinery, pumps, cranes) around which period asbestos products were typically applied.

Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this 1943 steel sectional drydock was mass-produced - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard naval and merchant-type hulls and craft.

    Limitations
Secondary compiled reference - the author's own page notes WWII floating-dock builder records are incomplete. Conflicts with DANFS's four-contractor construction account for the dock's sections and with NVR's 'Naval Shipyard Pearl Harbor' builder field for IX-525; the Section-C-to-Everett-Pacific attribution is plausible (Everett-Pacific was the Everett yard) but not conclusively documented. Gives the reclassification year (1998) but not the 1998-03-02 day date. No asbestos information.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum/registry materials statement, or docketed case naming IX-525, ABSD-1 Section C, or AFDB-1 Section C was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The NVR record, DANFS Artisan entry, NavSource disposition page, and MARAD ShipHistory database (no record for the hull) contain no asbestos or insulation-material statement. CourtListener opinion searches produced only name collisions (see ev-08).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-built steel section housing crew quarters and diesel machinery is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials having been present, and the section's 2010 disposal-for-reuse status means no abatement/scrapping record was expected in Navy channels. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.

    Finding
CourtListener searches by hull number and parent-dock designations located no qualifying asbestos litigation naming this craft. Executed queries: 'IX-525' opinion search returned one name-collision hit - University of Richmond v. Bell (a Title IX education case; 'IX-525' matched non-vessel text); 'ABSD-1' opinion search returned zero results; '"Artisan" "floating drydock"' opinion search returned one non-vessel hit - Ellis v. Travelers Insurance Co. (La. Ct. App. 1960, 'artisan' used as a legal term for a craftsman). Two planned queries could not be executed because the fleet-wide CourtListener request budget was spent: 'IX-525' docket search and 'AFDB-1' opinion search - logged as blocked in the search ledger.

Litigation sweep is partially complete: three of five planned queries ran across ~70 minutes of fleet-budget contention (shared ~114 req/hr across all sessions); all produced zero results or name collisions - no qualifying asbestos litigation located. Unexecuted queries ('IX-525' docket-type; 'AFDB-1' opinion) remain open - treat the sweep as a partial negative, not exhaustive.
