Naval Vessel Register ship detail for 'NO NAME (IX 533)' (ex-BD 6652, YD 222), type UNCLASSIFIED MISCELLANEOUS, UIC 22564: delivered 06/01/1954; stricken 08/10/2009; status changed 07/23/2010 to 'Disposed of, sold by Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (DRMS) for reuse/conversion'. Physical characteristics per NVR: overall length 142 ft, extreme beam 59 ft, max navigational draft 4 ft, light displacement 1,000 tons, steel hull and steel superstructure, propulsion type none; no keel, launch, commission, decommission, or accommodation figures carried - consistent with an unnamed non-commissioned service craft. Official register record, retrieved via Wayback capture because the live NVR page is no longer published. Establishes identity, lineage, dates, dimensions, material, and disposal. Contains no asbestos, machinery, or crewing information; does not state the craft's 1954-2000 duty station or the purpose of its 2002 reactivation.

    Finding
The craft was built by Gunter & Zimmerman, Stockton CA, as U.S. Army BD-6652; delivered to the U.S. Navy 1 June 1954 and placed in service as floating derrick YD-222; struck from the Naval Register 31 August 2000; reinstated, reactivated, and reclassified Miscellaneous Unclassified IX-533 on 25 June 2002; assigned to the Space and Warfare Systems Center San Diego, CA (the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center San Diego - SSC San Diego, renamed Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific in 2019); placed out of service and struck from the Naval Register 10 August 2009.

    Limitations
Volunteer-maintained archival index, not an official Navy publication; however its dates (1954-06-01 delivery, 2009-08-10 strike) agree with the official NVR record, and it is the only located source giving the 2000-08-31 strike and 2002-06-25 reinstatement/reclassification dates and the SPAWARSYSCEN San Diego assignment. It does not state what SPAWAR used the craft for, and its note 'placed out of service as YD-222' in the delivery line is an evident typographical slip for 'placed in service.'

YD section row YD-222 and BD section row BD-6652; program summary paragraph ('the Navy has added 72 YDs and the Army has added at least 44 BDs... 40 were BDs transferred in from the Army')
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
This hull belongs to the documented post-WWII standard derrick-barge family: the Navy added 72 YDs after WWII, of which 40 were ex-Army BD hulls transferred in; YD-222 appears in the compiled table as built by Gunter & Zimmerman, Stockton CA, 140 ft, 1,000 tons, 1954, ex-BD-6652. The same compiled table misprints the reclassification as 'IX-536' - the official Naval Vessel Register controls: this hull became IX-533, while the same table itself lists YD-253 (Halter Marine, 1991) as the hull reclassified IX-536 in 2002.

    Limitations
Compiled secondary reference table, not an official record. Builder/year/dimensions corroborate NVR and NavSource. The 'reclassified as IX-536' note is a misprint contradicted by the official NVR detail (IX-533) and by the table's own YD-253 row; logged so the error does not propagate.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
Peer-reviewed scholarship documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. military shipbuilding during WWII and remained standard practice in the same construction culture into the postwar period in which this 1954 steel craft was built. Era-typical asbestos applications on a small non-self-propelled steel harbor craft of 1954 would be limited to crane-machinery and diesel-engine/exhaust insulation, gaskets and packing, brake linings on rotating equipment, electrical insulation, and deck or deckhouse coverings; the boiler/steam-plant applications that dominate powered-vessel profiles do not apply because the craft has no propulsion plant (NVR propulsion type: none).

Construction trades (Gunter & Zimmerman, Stockton, 1954); small rotating crews of operating yards and SPAWARSYSCEN San Diego
    Limitations
Era/program-level scholarship on WWII shipbuilding, applied here only as construction-culture context for a 1954 postwar craft; it does not name this hull or the BD/YD-2xx design family and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation. No design-level material specification for the derrick-barge family was located, so the product list in asbestos_products_documented is era inference, not design documentation.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum record, or docketed case naming BD-6652, YD-222, or IX-533 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1954 steel construction is era-consistent with retained ACM, and a non-commissioned service craft rarely generated the documentation trail that named vessels carry. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; establishes no exposure and no legal eligibility.

    Finding
CourtListener API v4 opinion searches: 'IX-533' returned zero opinions; 'BD-6652' returned zero opinions; 'YD-222' returned one opinion, Adler Construction Co. v. United States, 423 F.2d 1362 (Ct. Cl. 1970) - a Bureau of Reclamation dam-construction contract-release dispute whose opinion text does not contain the hull designation (name collision). No qualifying asbestos litigation and no opinion naming this vessel under any designation was located.

    Limitations
CourtListener opinion coverage is not the full docket universe - RECAP docket search for this hull designation remained throttled under the shared fleet request budget at research time (see search_ledger sl-09). A docketed case could exist outside the opinion index; absence here is a sweep result, not proof no filing ever named the craft. Unnamed service craft are rarely named in asbestos pleadings in any event.
