- DANFS record for this hull: laid down 21 August 1935 by Puget Sound Navy Yard, Bremerton, Wash.; launched 6 May 1937, sponsored by Mrs. Thomas T. Craven; commissioned 27 October 1937, Lt. Comdr. R. R. Ferguson in command. Spec block: 1,850 tons, 341'4" x 35'6", 35 kt, complement 158, listed 'cl. Gridley.' Moored next to Mugford (DD-389) at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard on 7 December 1941; opened fire among the first ships, claimed four planes, emerged undamaged. Rescued 182 survivors of oiler Neches (AO-5) on 23 January 1942. San Francisco overhaul February 1941 and alterations April-May 1942 (yard not named). Screened the Guadalcanal landings 7-8 August 1942; aerial torpedo hit the starboard side near the forward fireroom at about noon 8 August; towed by Dewey (DD-349), crossed to Tulagi, transferred wounded, emergency repairs. Departed Tulagi about midnight 9 August; per Japanese records 'split and sank' at 1300 on 9 August 1942; 'went down with all hands.' Three battle stars.

- Puget Sound Navy Yard construction trades 1935-37; crew 1937-42 (design complement 158, wartime higher); Pearl Harbor Navy Yard alongside-period December 1941
- Limitations
- DANFS documents construction, specifications, and service/loss narrative - not materials or asbestos content. Two DANFS-internal anomalies noted, not resolved: class listed as 'cl. Gridley' (modern references carry Bagley class) and the assisting destroyer printed as 'Blue (DD-378)' (Blue was DD-387). The specific San Francisco yard for the 1941 overhaul and 1942 alterations is not named. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404.

[2]Bagley-class engineering data (destroyerhistory.org class record; NavSource DD-393 data sheet: 'General Electric geared turbines, 2 screws'; Bagley-class design: 4 Babcock & Wilcox boilers, 400 psi steam superheated to 700 deg F, GE geared turbines, ~49,000 shp) + DANFS specifications block [other_primary]

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/class inference: a 1935-37 Navy-yard-built destroyer of the Bagley/Gridley design carried a high-pressure superheated steam plant (four oil-fired water-tube boilers supplying geared turbines), the configuration that in this era was standardly insulated with asbestos-containing boiler insulation, steam-line lagging, flange and valve gaskets, machinery packing, and fireproofing. Typical applications for the type: boiler and uptakes insulation, main and auxiliary steam-line lagging, turbine lagging, gaskets and packing, fireproofing, deck coverings.

- Construction trades 1935-37; engine-room and fireroom crew 1937-42 (class context)
- Limitations
- Class/design and era inference only - no hull-specific material specification, survey, or record was located (impossible in the usual forms: hull lost 1942, wreck unlocated). Class machinery figures derive from class references, not a DD-393 record. Does not establish that asbestos was installed aboard this hull, in what quantity, or by which manufacturer.

- Finding
- Builder-yard context: Jarvis was constructed (1935-37) at Puget Sound Navy Yard, a yard with documented asbestos product use and a documented insulator workforce health study in the Atlas dataset. Documents that the hull was built inside a yard whose trades handled asbestos insulation products.

- Population
- Puget Sound Navy Yard shipyard workers (yard-level cohort; insulators/pipe coverers)
- Limitations
- Yard-level documentation, not a hull record - establishes asbestos product presence and handling at the builder yard, not aboard DD-393. Temporal gap: the yard's flagship industrial-hygiene study is circa 1970, more than three decades after this hull's 1935-37 construction; it evidences enduring yard trades, not 1930s conditions aboard this ship.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Contemporaneous professional-press reconstruction of the loss naming this hull: 'the damaged American destroyer U.S.S. Jarvis with 246 officers and men on board vanished in the Coral Sea southwest of Guadalcanal'; the Navy Department listed Jarvis as missing at sea with unknown final fate until Japanese records established she 'split and sank' 9 August 1942. Establishes the all-hands loss and its figure ambiguity (246 vs 233/248 in other sources - carried in gaps).

- Finding
- Official Navy news release reporting the July-August 2025 OET/Nautilus archaeological survey of 13 Iron Bottom Sound wreck sites (incl. USS Vincennes, Astoria, Quincy, Northampton, Laffey DD-459, DeHaven, Preston, Walke, HMAS Canberra, IJN Teruzuki and Yudachi, the bow of USS New Orleans, and an unidentified landing barge). USS Jarvis (DD-393) is not among the sites surveyed or newly identified - consistent with the wreck never having been located; she sank south of Guadalcanal while retiring westward, outside the principal battle-area survey concentration.

- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located: zero opinion-index results for 'USS Jarvis', 'USS Jarvis' + asbestos, and 'DD-393'; zero RECAP docket-index results for 'USS Jarvis'. The sweep returned no hit of any kind naming any USS Jarvis - no disambiguation between DD-393, DD-799, and FFG-33 was required.

- Limitations
- Absence from CourtListener indexes does not prove absence of litigation - state-court dockets, MDL-875 pleading exhibits not indexed by name, and workers-compensation claims are outside coverage. A pre-1942-sunk hull is also a structurally rare exposure site (no postwar service window). Establishes only that no qualifying case was located in the searched indexes on this date.
