- NavSource timeline for this hull (the post-1967 record DANFS lacks): assigned WWII Asiatic-Pacific Theater, LST Flotilla 31 / Group 93 / Division 185; named USS Jennings County (LST-846) 1 July 1955; recommissioned 11 June 1966 at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, LT L. M. Patella in command; served continuously in country and contiguous waters (overhaul periods excepted) from late 1966 to mid-1970 through nine Vietnam campaigns including Counteroffensive Phases II/III/IV/VII, Tet Counteroffensive, Tet 69/Counteroffensive, Summer-Fall 1969, Winter-Spring 1970, and Sanctuary Counteroffensive. 'Severely damaged by an on board fire in 1970.' 'Decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register, 26 September 1970, at Naval Station Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines.' 'Sold for service as an ore barge for a mining company. Final Disposition, fate unknown.' One battle star Korea, nine campaign stars Vietnam. Specifications: 2 x General Motors 12-567A 900hp diesels, single Falk main reduction gears, three diesel-drive 100kW ship's service generators, 2 propellers 1,700 shp, twin rudders, 11.6 kts trial; complement 13 officers / 104 enlisted plus troops 16 officers / 147 enlisted. Page photography (crew-credited) documents HAL-3 Seawolf helicopters and a PBR on deck off Ha Tien 1969-70, dry-docking at Saigon, and the aftermath of the 1970 fire.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track NVR/DANFS but conflicts exist: this page's own CO table ends the last CO's tour 25 September 1970 and Wikipedia carries 25 September for decommission/strike (see gaps). The ore-barge sale and 'fate unknown' stand on NavSource alone - no disposal contract located. Contains no asbestos content; the 1970 fire's specifics (auxiliary engine room, off Son On Doc) are secondary-sourced and flagged in gaps.

- Verbatim award-citation text names this hull's Vietnam role: the Navy Unit Commendation to Task Unit 76.8.3 names 'USS GARRETT COUNTY (LST-786), USS HARNETT COUNTY (LST-821), USS HUNTERDON COUNTY (LST-838) AND USS JENNINGS COUNTY (LST-846)' for meritorious service 10 November 1966 - 30 January 1968 and 1 March - 30 September 1968 as units of CTF-116 (Operation Game Warden), serving 'as a mobile support base for river patrol boats (PBRs) and UH-1B (Seawolf) helicopter gunships' in the Mekong Delta - 1,800+ ship-days on station, 11,000+ helicopter launches/landings, ~6,400 PBR patrols originated, 475 gunfire support missions. The Presidential Unit Citation to Commander Task Group 194.0 (Operation SEA LORDS, 18 October - 5 December 1968) covers participating units.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Primary-source deck logs for this hull are digitized and publicly online: the NARA catalog returns 889 file units for 'LST-846' - monthly RG 24 deck-log scans spanning her commissionings, including the August and September 1970 volumes that cover the onboard fire, removal from station, and the 26 September 1970 decommissioning/strike at Subic Bay. These logs are the primary anchor for the post-1967 record and a candidate primary source for any future exposure-relevant entries (yard availabilities, material handling, casualties).

- The BuShips 1945 design table documents the LST-542-group plant: 2 x GM 12-567A diesels, ~1,700 shp, 11.6 kt - a diesel-driven amphibian with no boilers. Era/design inference for asbestos-relevant applications on a late-1944 LST of this group: diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, machinery packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings - the standard asbestos applications of WWII amphibious construction. Her June 1966 recommissioning at Mare Island after 10+ years in the Pacific Reserve Fleet added a period interior-refit scope typical of reactivation work.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, or work package located for LST-846. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. The 1966 refit scope is inference from the recommissioning fact - no Mare Island work package for this hull was located.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and service era (1945-1970, including the 1966 reactivation).

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS Jennings County / LST-846 was found in the public sources searched. CAVEAT: CourtListener could not be queried this session - API returned HTTP 429 with a ~9.4-hour Retry-After (daily quota exhausted); logged as blocked in search_ledger, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case - the only 'Jennings County' asbestos hits are geographic name collisions (an Indiana asbestos-appellate case and an Indiana IDEM abatement violation located in Jennings County, Indiana) plus law-firm marketing content (gpwlaw.com Ambridge-shipyards page) asserting asbestos at the builder yard without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the litigation repository search is a genuine open gap (throttled, not run). The digitized 1966-70 deck logs are an unread primary lead. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
