[2]Naval History and Heritage Command, Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, 'John D. Edwards (Destroyer No. 216)' (verbatim DANFS transcription checked against the indexed NHHC entry) [nhhc_danfs]

- Specifications block; construction paragraph; 1942 operations and final disposition paragraphs. Transcription: https://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ships/dafs/DD/dd216.html
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS identifies DD-216 as a Clemson-class destroyer built by William Cramp & Sons in Philadelphia: laid down 21 May 1919, launched 18 October 1919, commissioned 6 April 1920. Its specifications block lists complement 124. The ship served in the Asiatic Fleet, fought at Badoeng Strait and the Java Sea in February 1942, later escorted convoys, decommissioned at Philadelphia on 28 July 1945, and was sold to Boston Metal Co. in January 1946.

- Limitations
- The live NHHC URL returned HTTP 404 on this research date; the indexed NHHC text and an identified transcription of the official DANFS entry agree on the carried facts. The transcription omits the exact day of commissioning, which appears in the indexed NHHC text. DANFS gives a listed complement, not a wartime crew count. It does not identify asbestos or other hull materials, repair specifications, exposure, or final dismantling.

[3]NHHC, H-Gram 064, 'Close Quarters Antisubmarine Warfare,' part 2, Clemson-class description; DANFS, John D. Edwards class identification [other_primary]
- Locator
- H-Gram 064, paragraph describing the Clemson class; DANFS specifications block
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NHHC describes Clemson-class destroyers as twin-screw ships with geared turbines; DANFS identifies John D. Edwards as a member of that class. This supplies propulsion design context only.

- Limitations
- The live H-Gram URL returned HTTP 404; its indexed NHHC text supplied the class description. The H-Gram discusses USS Borie, not machinery installed on DD-216. Turbines and class design do not establish asbestos aboard this hull.

- Locator
- Section 050-7.2.7, 'Handling and Removal of Asbestos Materials'
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- NAVSEA's inactive-ships manual states that past Navy shipbuilding programs extensively used asbestos materials for shipboard installations including thermal insulation and deck tile. Read with the Clemson-class steam-turbine design, this identifies categories for archival research into DD-216, not materials demonstrated aboard it.

- Limitations
- The manual dates from 2005, six decades after this ship left Navy service. It does not name DD-216 or establish that its construction, later repairs, or sale involved asbestos. No product or exposure is attributed to this hull.

- Locator
- General Information Books; Board of Inspection and Survey Reports; Ship Engineering Drawings, S39 and 19-Hull
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA identifies RG 19 destroyer General Information Books, ship engineering drawings under hull number and material group S39 (insulation and lagging), and RG 38 destroyer inspection reports as record series that may support hull-level materials research. DD-216 holdings were not retrieved or reviewed.

- Limitations
- This is a guide to possible series, not confirmation that an individual DD-216 file survives, has been digitized, or states asbestos content. NARA also says deck logs and muster rolls do not directly document asbestos materials.

- Locator
- search_ledger entries sl-uss-john-d-edwards-dd216-01 through -05
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The reviewed public NHHC ship history and photograph index, NARA asbestos research guide and online searches, and NAVSEA asbestos reading-room index did not yield a ship-specific asbestos survey, material specification, abatement record, or disposal record for DD-216.

- Limitations
- A bounded negative search result, not evidence that the ship contained no asbestos. NARA physical holdings and nondigitized specifications were not inspected. The CourtListener search was blocked by fleet pacing before any request and is not included in this negative finding.
