    Finding
End of service per DANFS (updated 26 February 2018): NavSea decertified the arresting gear 13 February 2006; the Navy announced decommissioning intent 30 December 2004 (FY07 decommission confirmed December 2006); John F. Kennedy decommissioned at Mayport 23 March 2007; departed under tow 26 July 2007 and reached the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard 1 August 2007; stricken from the Naval Vessel Register 16 October 2009; as of the 2018 DANFS update, 'laid up at Philadelphia pending final disposition.'

    Limitations
The 2018-dated 'laid up at Philadelphia pending final disposition' is the last official-history status; subsequent events (2021 sale, 2025 tow) post-date the entry and are carried in the next row via press-carried Navy statements.

    Finding
DANFS documents extensive exposure-relevant yard periods: Norfolk Naval Shipyard dry dock no. 8 major overhaul from 19 March 1979 (arson fires during the yard period 9 April 1979; completed November 1979); Norfolk Naval Shipyard overhaul and rehabilitation 15 October 1982 - 7 February 1983; Norfolk Naval Shipyard $165 million overhaul to 20 September 1985; and a $491,000,000 comprehensive overhaul in drydock at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard beginning in the mid-1990s, during which the ship was homeported in Philadelphia for two years.

    Limitations
Documents the scale and timing of industrial work aboard (drydock overhauls, space-by-space rehabilitation) without describing insulation or asbestos materials - yard periods are exposure-relevant context, not material findings.

  3. [3]NAVSEA statement as carried by Kitsap Sun/USA Today (Oct 2021) and military trade press; Federal Register donation notice (23 Nov 2009) as summarized by NavSource; NavSource CV-67 status lines for the 2025 tow dates [reputable_press]
    Locator
Kitsap Sun 2021-10-01 (NAVSEA statement; 'unfit' donation applications; 2017 redesignation); NavSource CV-67 status lines (FR notice date, RI suspension, 16 Jan 2025 tow, 2 Feb 2025 arrival)
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
Post-DANFS disposal chain: a Federal Register notice of 23 November 2009 advertised ex-John F. Kennedy's availability for donation as a museum/memorial under 10 U.S.C. 7306; the Navy judged the donation applications received 'unfit' and redesignated the ship for dismantlement in late 2017; the RI Aviation Hall of Fame's USS John F. Kennedy Aircraft Carrier Project suspended its donation effort in August 2018. In October 2021 Naval Sea Systems Command announced the sale of ex-John F. Kennedy and ex-Kitty Hawk to International Shipbreaking Ltd. of Brownsville for one cent each under the Navy's tow/remediation/dismantling/recycling contract. The hulk was towed out of Philadelphia 16 January 2025 and arrived at Brownsville 2 February 2025 for scrapping.

    Limitations
Sale and donation-disposition facts are Navy statements carried in reputable press (original navy.mil release not retrieved); the Federal Register notice exists per NavSource but was not read directly in this pass; 2025 tow dates rest on NavSource status lines and contemporaneous reporting.

    Locator
    search_ledger row sl-uss-john-f-kennedy-cv67-03
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
CourtListener sweeps for this hull returned no qualifying asbestos litigation and essentially no litigation of any kind: queries on "USS John F. Kennedy" asbestos carrier, "CV-67" asbestos navy, and "John F. Kennedy" aircraft carrier asbestos mesothelioma all returned zero results. There is no indirect or collision pattern worth recording beyond the absence itself.

    Limitations
A null litigation result is not proof that no exposure claims exist - unindexed state-court and settled matters are invisible to opinion databases. Reported as a search outcome, not as a fact about the ship.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos record of any kind located for this hull: no asbestos or insulation survey, no abatement contract, no hazmat disclosure for the pending ISL dismantlement, and no published opinion naming CV-67 in an asbestos claim was found in the sources searched (DANFS, NavSource, Navy announcements via press, CourtListener, govinfo).

    Limitations
Negative finding within the sources searched; a Navy/ISL hazmat record for the 2025 dismantlement almost certainly exists or is in progress but none was located publicly. Not a claim that the ship lacked asbestos.

  6. [6]Kitty Hawk-class profile (class-d/kitty-hawk-class.class.json); Navy/DOE EIS-0524 era statement; DANFS construction data [other_primary]
    Locator
class profile member notes; EIS-0524 Section 3.2.2.1.1 generic Navy statement
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
Class/era context: CV-67 was completed to a modified Kitty Hawk-class design at Newport News (1964-68) with an eight-boiler, four-turbine steam plant in the peak years of Navy asbestos use; the Navy's own disposal-era EIS work states asbestos-containing material 'is found throughout Navy ships' in piping insulation, electrical cables, and structures. The batch class profile locates no member-specific asbestos record for CV-67, and litigation records belonging to sister ships (CV-63, CV-64, CV-66) do not transfer to this hull.

    Limitations
Era-standard application list and the Navy's generic statement - prioritizes research only; it is NOT a ship-specific finding and does not confirm installed materials on this hull. Sister-ship litigation (e.g., CV-63 Whitlock, CV-64 Little/Pace) is not transferable.
