Adams). Laid down by Bath Iron Works Corp., Bath, Maine, 25 August 1958; launched 30 January 1960, sponsored by Mrs. Paul J. Kilday; commissioned 4 February 1961 at Boston, Comdr. A. M. Sackett in command. 'One of a new class of guided missile destroyers, she featured latest hull design with all-aluminum superstructure.' Service narrative: shakedown Guantanamo Bay; Norfolk arrival 7 Sep 1961; northern Europe/6th Fleet 1961-62; entered Norfolk Navy Yard 11 Oct 1962; joined Cuban missile quarantine 6 Nov 1962; operated with USS Enterprise; Norfolk 8 Dec 1962; 6th Fleet deployments 1963, 1964 (Cyprus), Oct 1965-Mar 1966, Jan-May 1967; entered Norfolk Naval Shipyard 27 Jun 1967 for overhaul. DANFS does not address materials, asbestos content, or crew exposure. Live NHHC page 404s on 2026-09-28; verbatim hazegray/losthistory mirror transcription cited.

- Official NVR record for this hull: class DDG 2; builder Bath Iron Wks Corp; award 28 Mar 1957; keel 25 Aug 1958; launch 30 Jan 1960; delivery 27 Jan 1961; commission 4 Feb 1961; decommission 30 Mar 1990 (29.1 years commission-to-decommission); stricken 12 Jan 1993. Status 'Disposed of, resold by Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service (DRMS) for scrapping', date status changed 10 Feb 1999. Remarks: 'DISMANTLED AT INTERNATIONAL SHIPBREAKING LIMITED, BROWNSVILLE, TX. DATE UNKNOWN.' Sale price of $132,951.03 to International Shipbreakers, Brownsville is recorded by NavSource (corroborated to $132,951 by the Encyclopedia of Arkansas); stricken-to-sale layup at the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility, Philadelphia is recorded by EOA and navysite.de.

- Limitations
- NVR establishes official milestone dates and disposal channel only; it does not document asbestos, hazmat condition, or how the ISL dismantling was conducted. The sale price and the NISMF-Philadelphia layup come from secondary compilations (NavSource; Encyclopedia of Arkansas; navysite.de), not the NVR row itself. 'Resold by DRMS' is the disposal mechanism - the vessel was not transferred to MARAD.

NavSource is a volunteer photographic archive - the 1983 caption is the contributor's; the 1989 caption is a U.S. government photo record. Duration and completion dates of the 1983 overhaul not documented.

- Finding
- Class/era inference: John King (built 1958-61) is a Charles F. Adams-class destroyer. USNI Proceedings (Jul 1965) describes the class plant as '1,200 p.s.i. steam, 70,000 horsepower, geared turbine main propulsion plant... four boilers located front-to-front in two fire-rooms'; FAS's Navy fact-file mirror lists '4 - 1200 psi boilers; 2 geared turbines 2 shafts; 70,000 shaft horsepower' and confirms DDG-3 among the Bath Iron Works-built units (DDG 2-3, 10-11). A steam plant of this pressure class and construction era would have carried period-standard asbestos boiler casing and turbine lagging, steam-line insulation, flange gaskets, valve packing, fireproofing, and deck coverings. The builder yard's Atlas record (tier 2) documents era asbestos conditions: a 1942 Harvard/Drinker study of BIW pipe-covering shops finding dust risk ~10x the safe threshold (PMID 21016030) and OSHA asbestos-standard citations with an 80% bulk sample and 1.71 f/cc personal sample in a 20 May 1987 health inspection (Inspection 101450294).

- Bath Iron Works construction and repair trades (class-level); crew over 1961-1990 service life (inference only)
- Limitations
- Class/era and builder-yard inference only. No source names this hull's insulation, gaskets, or coverings as asbestos-containing; no ship-specific finding follows from class or yard evidence. The 1987 OSHA inspection postdates the ship's construction by ~26 years and documents yard conditions, not this hull. NARA RG19 'General Information Books' hull-level material specifications are the archival lead and were not retrieved.

- Finding type

- Finding
- Program-level disposal context for this hull's 10 Feb 1999 DRMS scrap sale: GAO found ~200 surplus federal ships awaiting scrapping, with the Navy reporting 127 (72 expected to be sold through DRMS - the channel used for this hull - and 55 through MARAD). GAO documents that surplus ships of this cohort contain 'materials such as asbestos, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), lead, mercury, and cadmium,' that dismantling proceeds top-down by torch-cutting, and that 'remediation of hazardous materials takes place prior to, as well as during, the dismantling process.' ISL Brownsville, where this hull was dismantled (NVR), was among the active domestic scrapping contractors.

- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming DDG-3 / DD-953 located. Opinion-type queries 'USS John King', 'U.S.S. John King', 'aboard USS John King', 'aboard the John King' returned count=0; hull-number queries 'DDG-3' and 'DD-953' returned count=0. 'John King' + destroyer returned 3 hits, all name collisions in unrelated Texas appellate matters (In Re: John Calce x2; East Texas Medical Center Gilmer v. Birder Porter - guardianship/hospital-lien domain, no vessel, not asbestos). Docket-type 'USS John King' returned 284 loose-token hits, top-20 relevance-ranked all non-asbestos collisions (no MDL-875 or ship-name docket surfaced); tightened docket query 'USS John King' + asbestos returned 8 hits, likewise all name collisions (tokens matched disparate docket text, not an asbestos complaint naming this hull). One residual query - 'John King' + asbestos opinion-type - was still blocked by the shared fleet pacing budget at record close; classification therefore carries a partial caveat, but four name-variant and both hull-number opinion queries returned zero qualifying results.

- Litigation search coverage is limited to CourtListener-indexed state/federal opinions and federal dockets; unindexed state trial-court filings, settled MDL-875 claimant records, and non-digitized proceedings are not covered. One paired-token opinion query ('John King' asbestos) remained unexecuted at record close due to fleet pacing contention - a residual hole, not a clean negative for that single pairing; all completed queries returned zero qualifying hits.
