    Finding
Documented for this hull: laid down 4 April 1960 by Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Va.; launched 15 July 1961, sponsored by Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy, wife of the Attorney General; commissioned 21 May 1962, Comdr. Robert W. Stecher (Blue crew) and Comdr. Robert D. Donavan (Gold crew) in command. Shakedown from 31 May 1962; homeport Charleston, S.C., from 15 December 1962. Ninth operational Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine; departed Charleston 31 December 1962 on her first Polaris patrol, arriving Holy Loch, Scotland, 8 March 1963. Completed ninth patrol 15 January 1965; made 17 Polaris patrols before beginning her first major overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., 13 December 1966. DANFS spec block: dp. 6,900 (surf.), 7,900 (subm.); l. 410'5"; b. 33'; dr. 30'9"; s. over 20 k.; cpl. 112; a. 16 A-2 Pol. mis.; cl. Ethan Allen.

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. The 1966-67 Newport News overhaul is an exposure-relevant event, but asbestos disturbance within it is era inference, not a per-hull record. Live NHHC DANFS page returned 404; verbatim transcription used.

    Finding
Reclassified attack submarine SSN-611 in 1981 (redesignation date given variously as 12 January 1981 and 1 May 1981 - see gaps) after her missile tubes were disabled under SALT ceilings; the Bauer & Roberts register note (carried in the DANFS transcription) records conversion 1 May 1981 to carry frogmen or commandos. Converted at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard to a special-operations/amphibious platform with dry-deck shelters; operated out of Submarine Squadron 4, Charleston, and later from Pacific bases. Arrived Bangor, Washington, 31 January 1992 for offload; final one-day sea transit 6 February 1992 to Puget Sound NSY. Decommissioned and simultaneously stricken 22 July 1992; NPSSRP recycling completed 29 March 1993.

PSNSY conversion trades; PSNSY inactivation/recycling workers (1992-93)
    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer archive transcribing NVR entries - cited as NVR-derived secondary because the live NVR carries no detail page for this hull (per-ship pages not located; site shell only). Reclassification date conflict (12 January vs 1 May 1981) unresolved in open sources - carried in gaps. No asbestos content; the conversion and recycling involved material disturbance at yard level, but no hull-specific ACM disclosure was located.

  3. [3]NHHC, Navy 250 commemoration toolkit, 'Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines' (SSBNS.pdf) - official class-level history [nhhc_danfs]

    NHHC Navy250 SSBNS.pdf, Ethan Allen-class paragraph
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NHHC documents that the Ethan Allen-class and all later SSBNs were designed from the keel up to carry ballistic missiles, that the Navy built five Ethan Allen-class boats between 1961 and 1963 equipped with A-2 and later A-3 missiles, and that by 1966 the force totaled 41 boats ('41 for Freedom'). John Marshall is the fourth boat of the class.

    Finding
A fleet ballistic missile submarine built 1960-62 at Newport News and maintained through Navy-yard availabilities across the 1960s-90s sits inside the Navy's peak asbestos-use era; era-standard applications on the secondary steam plant (steam generators to turbines) and auxiliary systems included thermal/pipe insulation, gaskets, packing, and machinery insulation. Both yards documented for this hull (Newport News construction and 1966-67 overhaul; Puget Sound NSY conversion and recycling 1992-93) carry yard-level asbestos product documentation in the Atlas shipyards dataset.

NNS construction and overhaul trades (1960-62, 1966-67); PSNSY trades; Blue and Gold crews (1962-1992)
    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey or material list located for SSBN-611. Names era-standard applications on non-nuclear auxiliary/secondary systems, not confirmed installed materials; the S5W reactor plant establishes nothing. No quantity. Hull no longer extant (recycled 1993) - present-day material condition moot.

    Finding
GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - covering this hull's construction window (1960-62) and the 1966-67 Newport News overhaul.

  6. [6]Batch-76 search ledger (this record): DANFS transcription; NavSource/NVR-derived disposition; NHHC class PDF; CourtListener name and hull-number searches plus RECAP indexed-document sweep; GAO product page [other_primary]

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-john-marshall-ssbn611-01 through -08
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying asbestos case naming USS John Marshall (SSBN/SSN-611) was found. 'John Marshall' is a high-collision name (Chief Justice; law schools; numerous unrelated matters); indexed-document sweep returned no qualifying asbestos case naming this hull. CourtListener direct search was throttled mid-sweep (HTTP 429/202) - coverage is partial and logged as such in the ledger.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. The hull was fully recycled (1993); SRP hazardous-material handling records, if any exist naming this hull, are not public. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
