- Dravo and Consolidated Steel construction/conversion trades 1943-45; wartime crew and embarked troops (design complement 204 + approx. 162 troops)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents identity, service history, and specifications - not materials or asbestos content. Live NHHC DANFS pages return 404 and no Wayback capture exists; the printed Vol. III scan at archive.org is cited as the authoritative source. Spec block prints 'cl. Crosley' - a class-label discrepancy carried in gaps.

- Compiled naval-archive record for this hull: laid down 18 December 1943 as DE-673 (Buckley class) at Dravo Corp., Pittsburgh; launched 18 March 1944; redesignated APD-74 27 June 1944; towed to Orange, TX for fitting out as a high-speed transport; commissioned USS John P. Gray (APD-74) 15 March 1945 at Consolidated Shipbuilding Co., Orange, TX, LCDR William E. Sims in command; WWII Asiatic-Pacific Theater, TransDiv One Hundred Seven; occupation service in the Far East 3-20 September 1945; decommissioned at Green Cove Springs, FL (dated 29 May 1946 on this page - see limitations); laid up Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Texas Group, Orange, TX; struck from the Naval Register 1 March 1967; sold 3 September 1968 for scrapping. Awards displayed: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal (Asia clasp).

- Crew 1945-46; disposal workforce 1968
- Limitations
- NavSource is a compiled secondary archive, not an official record - consistent with DANFS on dates except the decommissioning day (NavSource 29 May 1946 vs DANFS 29 April 1946; DANFS carried). The 'sold 3 September 1968 for scrapping' disposal detail is NavSource-only, not verified against a disposal document. The APD spec block on this page lists Combustion Engineering boilers - conflicts with navypedia's Foster Wheeler block map; carried in gaps, not asserted.

- Era/design inference for this hull: the Buckley (TE) design - confirmed for this ship by DANFS (laid down as DE-673, Buckley class) - is BuShips design groups 2/3: two 'D' express-type boilers at 435 psi/750F superheat feeding GE turbo-electric machinery, 12,000 shp. A full superheated steam plant in 1943-45 U.S. construction implies boiler/fireroom insulation, steam-line and turbine lagging, gaskets, packing, and fireproofing typical of the era; the APD conversion (troop accommodations, added berthing/messing spaces) was built out under wartime period practices at Consolidated Steel, Orange, TX.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no ship-specific material schedule, contract specification, survey, or abatement record was located for this hull. Establishes no quantities and no individual exposure. Boiler manufacturer for this hull is unresolved (see gaps).

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum documentation, or docketed asbestos case naming DE-673/APD-74 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was sold for scrapping in 1968, predating the asbestos-regulatory era, and survives as no museum - so the record categories that produced ship-specific findings for preserved hulls (NHL nominations, drydock field reports, museum disclosures) do not exist here.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-45 steam-plant hull's era materials are consistent with period construction. This finding establishes only that the public sources searched contain no ship-specific documentation; it does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
