- DANFS record for this hull: laid down by Federal Shipbuilding Co., Kearny, N.J. [entry reads 'Kearny, N.H.' - sic], 27 May 1940; launched 25 October 1941 (sponsored by Mrs. Harry I. Lucas, wife of the Mayor of Juneau); commissioned 14 February 1942, Capt. Lyman K. Swenson. Spec block: cpl. 623; cl. Atlanta. Atlantic shakedown; blockade patrol off Martinique and Guadeloupe May 1942; alterations at New York; North Atlantic/Caribbean patrol and escort 1 June - 12 August; Pacific from 22 August. Naval Battle of Guadalcanal: with the support group off Lunga Point 12 November (six torpedo planes downed); torpedoed on the port side in the night action early 13 November - severe list, steaming on one screw in retirement. A few minutes after 1100 on 13 November 1942, torpedoed by Japanese submarine I-26 at the same point damaged in the surface action; 'there was a terrific explosion; Juneau broke in two and disappeared in 20 seconds' - Capt. Swenson and most of the crew lost, including the five Sullivan brothers; 'only 10 members of the crew survived the tragedy.' Four battle stars.

- Limitations
- DANFS documents construction, service history, and loss - not materials or asbestos content. Mirror transcription cited because the live NHHC page returns 404; transcription is verbatim DANFS text. 'Kearny, N.H.' is a DANFS misprint for Kearny, N.J.

- Era inference: Atlanta-class wartime construction (uniform class plant: 4 boilers, 2 Westinghouse geared steam turbines, 75,000 shp per BuShips Ships' Data 1945 CL machinery table for surviving sisters) at Federal Shipbuilding Co., Kearny, NJ, 1940-42, falls squarely in the documented Navy asbestos-insulation era; the 1960 BuShips Technical Manual insulation chapter enumerates the era-standard suite - 85%-magnesia (~15% asbestos) and amosite-fiber pipe covering, asbestos felt, chrysotile cloth/tape lagging, asbestos millboard, finishing cement, and molded asbestos block. Documented disturbance periods for this hull: builder yard period 1940-42 at Kearny; alterations at New York June - August 1942 (yard not named in DANFS - the New York Navy Yard is the inference). Sunk in action November 1942 - no post-loss material disturbance possible.

- Construction trades 1940-1942; yard workers mid-1942; crew 1942
- Limitations
- Class/era specification and yard-period inference only - no ship-specific asbestos record exists for this hull (ev-05); this row must not be read as establishing that asbestos products were aboard. Does not quantify material; insulation disturbance at documented yard periods is inference from work scope, not a documented abatement record. Ships' Data 1945 omits this hull (sunk before publication); machinery data rests on the uniform class design.

[5]Weinschenk, No. 1:22-cv-01150-RLY-MJD (S.D. Ind.), ECF No. 29 (CourtListener-indexed) - classification per batch-12 full-text review [court_record]
- Locator
- Weinschenk 1:22-cv-01150-RLY-MJD (S.D. Ind.) ECF No. 29; classified in batch-12 BATCH-12-REPORT.md ('Juneau reference is WWII CL-52 (Sullivan brothers trivia recital)')
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- NON-QUALIFYING litigation reference: a CourtListener-indexed filing in Weinschenk (S.D. Ind.) contains a 'USS Juneau' reference that resolves to this WWII cruiser - but it is a Sullivan-brothers historical/trivia recital inside the document, not an asbestos-exposure allegation, not a party claim, and not a finding of any kind concerning this hull. Recorded so reviewers can see the classification; it does not count as qualifying asbestos litigation.

- Limitations
- Historical recital only - establishes nothing about materials, exposure, or claims concerning this hull. Classification rests on batch-12's documented full-text review of ECF No. 29 (uss-juneau-lpd10.atlas.json ledger), not on a fresh fetch this session - CourtListener API was throttled.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: fresh CourtListener queries for this hull were BLOCKED (HTTP 429 - shared-IP 125/day cap exhausted mid-session); the class-profile's completed per-name CourtListener sweep of 2026-09-16 returned zero qualifying asbestos opinions for 'USS Juneau'. Every 'USS Juneau' litigation record located resolves elsewhere: Hultner v. Air & Liquid Systems (C.D. Cal. 8:24-cv-00409) and Siegfried v. 3M (C.D. Cal. 2:18-cv-01575, 'Juneau (LPD-10)') name the 1969 amphibious transport dock LPD-10 (batch-12 full-text review); Weinschenk (S.D. Ind.) is a Sullivan-brothers recital concerning this hull (ev-05). No hull ACM survey, abatement contract, sinking/disposal hazmat disclosure, NVR entry (hull sunk 1942, predates live-register coverage), or museum record with asbestos data was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger).

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it establishes only that no qualifying ship-specific documentation was found in the searched repositories. The fresh per-ship sweep is a partial sweep (blocked); corroboration rests on the class-level 2026-09-16 sweep and batch-12's full-text docket reviews. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
