    Limitations
Authoritative for identity, acquisition, service assignment, and disposal; contains no asbestos, materials, crew-count, or condition information. Canonical NHHC URL is 404 and no Wayback capture exists, so text is verified via transcription mirror only. Does not support any asbestos claim.

Shipscribe 'Small IX: Auxiliary Schooners etc. (3)' register compilation for IX-77: displacement 366 t. (242 gross); 134.2 ft deck (100.0 ft wl) x 28.2 ft x 17.4 ft; complement 22 (1944); 10.5 kt; machinery 1 screw, Winton diesel; armament small or none. Acquisition chronology: on 1 Jul 1942 VCNO asked WSA to requisition-purchase the yacht VEGA and authorized Com-12 to accept her; acquired 20 Jul 1942; renamed JUNIATA 3 Aug 1942; replaced by a new frigate (PF) in 1944. Disposition: out of service 1 Jan 1945; struck 19 Jan 1945; Maritime Commission/WSA sale 4 Jun 1945 to Thomas F. Hamilton of Beverly Hills. Class note traces postwar chain: 1951 Cornelius Crane (Tahiti, French registry, mainmast lost Dec 1951); South Pacific touring yacht 'TeVega'; re-engined in England later in the 1950s; 1960s Stanford University oceanographic/ecological studies; Flint School 1969-1981; Dutch owner leasing a school; 1990s Italian restoration; sold 2005 and renamed DEVA, operating out of La Spezia, Italy.

    Navy complement of 22 (1944)
    Limitations
Secondary compilation of official Navy register data, not a primary document image; complement of 22 (1944) could not be verified against DANFS/NHHC directly (DANFS gives no complement). Table 'Commiss.' column (12 Sep 42) corresponds to the Western Sea Frontier assignment date, not literal commissioning. Contains no asbestos or materials information; supports no asbestos claim.

    Limitations
Institutional history by the operating station, strongest for the 1962-1969 research-vessel period; minor acquisition-mechanism ambiguity (program page says 'donated to Hopkins Marine Station by Harold Miller in 1962' while the 1963 announcement describes a long-term charter from owner Liberian Pacific Navigation Co.). The hull remains extant. Classic Yacht Info registry records DEVA (1930 Krupp schooner): restored 1995-1997 at Cantiere Beconcini, La Spezia; complete refit 1997 and masts/sails/rigging/hull/interior work 2006; renamed DEVA 2006, private yacht cruising the Mediterranean. VesselFinder AIS record for MMSI 232030742 lists sailing vessel 'TE VEGA' under United Kingdom flag, last position report in the West Mediterranean approximately May 2026 (142 days before access). The vessel's own site (te-vega.com) markets her as a Krupp 1930 steel-hulled schooner located in Italy with a 1992 MTU diesel.

Contemporary private-yacht crew and any shipyard workers performing periodic refits
    Limitations
Establishes survival, repeated major refits, and current flag/operating area only. AIS broadcast name (TE VEGA, UK flag) conflicts with the 2006 DEVA rename reported by registries - current documented name unresolved. No asbestos, materials, or condition information in any of these sources; repeated re-engining and restoration imply substantial renewal of original fabric but do not document it. Supports no asbestos claim.

Deck logs and any BuShips/12th-ND correspondence on the 1942 acquisition conversion are not located in digitized public sources - NARA RG-19/RG-181 remain the open leads. No asbestos information.

    Limitations
Weaker-than-usual transplant: the study covers the WWII U.S. shipbuilding program, while this hull was built in Germany in 1930 as a private diesel-auxiliary yacht and was never built to U.S. Maritime Commission specifications. It contextualizes the wartime operating era only. Does not name this vessel, does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard, and establishes nothing about quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation.

    Finding
CourtListener opinion searches completed 2026-09-29 (authenticated API v4 via fleet helper): '"USS Juniata"' returned 0 results; '"IX-77" OR "IX 77"' returned 16 results, all name collisions (Texas AG opinions, workers-comp, chancery and unrelated matters); 'Juniata asbestos' returned 5 results, all name collisions (Lineberger and Adams v. Wyeth, Phila. CCP; Frederick v. Action Tire, Pa. Super.; Sea-Land Service v. United States, 3d Cir.; Wicker v. Consolidated Rail, W.D. Pa. - 'Juniata' references are incidental, e.g. Juniata Shops/County contexts, none naming this vessel). No qualifying asbestos litigation located for this hull. The docket-type (RECAP) search was not completed: the fleet-wide request budget was intermittently spent (paced ~114/hr against the 2,800/day account quota).

Opinion coverage is complete and clean: exact-name, hull-number, and asbestos-context queries returned no qualifying result - every hit is a name collision (Juniata County/Shops/River, Juniata College contexts) or unrelated matter. The RECAP docket-type sweep remains undone - retry owed. Zero opinion hits does not cover PACER-only dockets, unindexed state filings, or settled/undocketed claims.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, NRHP/HAER documentation, or adjudicated litigation naming this hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The 1930 German-built hull is extant but has been re-engined at least twice (1950s Mirrlees; 1990s MTU) and underwent major restorations in 1995-1997 and 2006; survival of any original-era insulation or gasket materials is undocumented in either direction.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1930-built steel yacht is consistent with era-typical asbestos insulation materials, and her post-1945 documentation does not address hazardous materials. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
