[2]Stephen S. Roberts, 'USS Kaloli (AOG-13),' Shipscribe U.S. Navy auxiliary records compilation (compiled 14 Aug 2010; drawn from CNO/VCNO/BuShips correspondence and NARA RG-19 material) [other_primary]

- Shipscribe's compilation of the Navy record: Charleston Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. delivered the gasoline carrier FLYING A to Tidewater Oil Co. in August 1941. CNO authorized time-charter acquisition 10 Dec 1941 (same action covered BLUE SUNOCO, later USS Halawa AOG-12); FLYING A time chartered 16 Dec 1941 and sent to the Pacific; received her 3"/50 gun and probably machine guns 26 Feb 1942; CinCPac requested bareboat charter with Navy crews Mar 1942; VCNO asked MC for the ships 31 Mar 1942; BuShips classified both AOG (gasoline tankers) by 10 Apr 1942; acquired and commissioned 29 Apr 1942; limited conversion ca. 10-27 May 1942 by Inter Island Dry Dock Co., Honolulu. Machinery: 2 De La Vergne Co. diesels, 2 screws, 1,360 HP, 9.5 kts - Baldwin Locomotive Works reported 4 Nov 1942 that no instruction books had ever been prepared for these unique marine engines, and the builder could supply only tracings. Disposal: MC delivered ship to temporary operator 7 Dec 1945 and to previous owner 13 Feb 1946; merchant FLYING A 1946; reported lying derelict at Harahan, La., 1976 and condemned 1978. Complement 46 (1944) per this compilation.

- Limitations
- Secondary compilation faithfully reproducing primary Navy correspondence and record content (not itself the archival document). Contains no asbestos, insulation, or material content. Postwar detail ('derelict 1976, condemned 1978') conflicts with shipbuildinghistory 'scrapped 1976' and MARAD 'Unknown' - carried in gaps. Complement 46 (1944) conflicts with DANFS 63 - carried in gaps.

- Limitations
- Confirms registry identity, builder, dimensions, and Navy-name linkage; adds no asbestos, insulation, or material information. Record carries apparent data artifacts - 'Specific Type: LNG Liquefied Natural Gas' on the FLYING A record and 'MARAD Type T2' on both records - not adopted. Fate 'Unknown' conflicts with compiled postwar record - carried in gaps.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS Kaloli (AOG-13) or M.V. Flying A was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener: 'Kaloli' opinion index 0 hits; 'AOG-13' opinion index 64 hits, all name collisions (AOG acronyms/exhibit numbering); 'Kaloli' RECAP docket index 93 hits, all name collisions (Hawaii street address 'Kaloli Loop', party names in unrelated bankruptcies). The vessel was abandoned in 1978, predating modern ACM survey regimes.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1941-built hull is era-consistent with asbestos use. Does not establish that asbestos was or was not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
